With all the money the NFL makes, this issue must be cleaned up. It already cost the Saints a trip to the super bowl. Okay, New Orleans is a small market; does it need to happen to Dallas or New England?

Too many games this year are decided on one bad call and could have had a different outcome with the correct call. Why not make the officials full time, and add 3 video official unaffiliated with the officiating crew. Take a red flag challenge away from the head ref. Don't waste time waiting for an older man running to a sideline to find a video terminal. Let the three video judges in a room full of monitors with multiple camera angles decide. Majority vote rules. 3-0 or 2-1. It won't take as long as you'll get a better call.

Besides, the referee really doesn't want to reverse a call and make his crew look bad.

Yes, except that New England doesn't get bad calls. Rog's orders.

I think video replay should be handled the way the NHL does it. Replay officials for each game, all in the same facility in Toronto. They watch their assigned game in real time. They alert the on field refs if there is an issue needing reviewed, and vice versa. Works well enough.

There are too many complex rules in the NFL that depend on judgement calls. Add in the excessive number of replays and the officials probably feel pressured to make calls. What the NFL apparently doesn't realize is that flags and replays are not fun to watch.

The entire replay system is painful right now. Besides taking way too long, they still don't get it right on too many reviews. I'm fine with Sarge's suggestion of a central replay office, but if you can't overturn a play within 30 seconds, let it stand. I'm tired of zoomed in, super slow motion replays from 10 different angles and three minutes of looks that show a ball that may be moving that results in an incomplete pass.

The issue is pretty simple.. the solution not so much...
there are 5 fairly major pro sports in North America...

Baseball has 10 to 13 players on the field at once, but there are really only five or six points of action to observe, and there aren’t too many subjective rules to observe. They employ 4 officials... there are really four varied positions... the batter, pitcher, catcher, and all the various fielders

Basketball has 10 total players on the field. They utilize 3 or four officials, however the points of action are really compressed and while fouls are very subjective, they are typically mostly close calls that could go either way...all of the players pretty much have the same positional rules...Outsideof offene and defensive rules

Hockey has 12 players and they have more complex and subjective rules than any except football... they have four officials and they are having a lot of the same issues the nfl has... but they also are the fastest sport and next to the NFL, have the most points of action with subjective calls going on at once and often the action is away from the puck....it only has two types of positions with varying rules specifically applied to them

Soccer has as many players as the NFL, and fewer refs... but the action is so slow paced that the points of action are usually focused around the ball... it really has two types of positions with varied rules specific to them

The NFL has 22 players...and 7 officials... but they utilize an extremely large field... they have the most different positions all with specific rules applied to them they also have the most simultaneous points of action and hands down the most subjective and complicated rules...

Its just too much... they need more specialized officials watching from above or something... there just is no way for seven humans to watch all those boundry and scrimmage lines, all those players, and keep all those rules straight

It's not a complex issue at all.

1. Make all Officials full time employees and evaluate them at the end of the year. ...and by "evaluate", I mean lie detector testing, constant monitoring, etc. treat them like someone with a security clearance.
2. Compress the rule book. If you don't want asshats like Harbaugh and Belicheat to expose old rules to influence games, then dive into that monstrosity and gut it.
3. Use technology. Develop a high tech football, sensors on the field, cameras, etc and make it consistent in each stadium. Heinz Field has high res cameras snapping photos of fans in the stadium, but we're still questioning a ******* first down.
4. Video review should be done by an off-site crew and viewed as part of the telecast. Fans should be able to watch and listen in on their conversation as they discuss the play. I don't need to hear Chris Collinsworth's jaded opinion on the matter.

Football would no longer exist if you did these changes. These changes go right to the core of being able to manipulate the games. Yes I said MANIPULATE and those that still don't think there is manipulation going on,....... then you best dig that hole a little deeper while stuffing your head down it.

What is the biggest draw to watching football,....... GAMBLING. More money is exchanged in the gambling aspect than any other revenue of sports. The BIG tV contracts are a result of the gambling. BIG MONEY isn't going to sit by and let things go by chance........ TAKE away the controversy and you take away the chance of manipulation. Controversy draws publicity and there is NO BAD publicity when it comes to the game.

I'm all for a fair game but those days, along with what football was meant to be as a game, are VERY long gone and not to be returning anytime soon if at all.

GREED is the driving factor in all that is wrong with the NFL and all things involved. What's the cost of a ticket? Hot dog and a beer? parking? well you get the drift. Now add in the league itself allowing "flexability" on the rules and add a blind eye to that as well. Think about this..... WEEK 7 and 63% of football fans (non-new england market area) polled believe NE is going to win the SB. The number one reason was cheating / fixed. Why is that so early in the season not even 1/2 way point and majority of fans have the SB winner belief??? MANIPULATIONMANIPULATIONMANIPULATION is the 3-word answer.

Remember to look on the back of your "purchased" game ticket and it says point blank that the price paid is for the entertainment value of said game. Entertainment value, nice way of saying nothing matters unless we say it matters and officiating is entertainment and it doesn't matter. Judgement plays, pass interference amongst them, are manipulation plays and look how ****** up it has become with the answer to their fixing that particular problem. Ahhhhh the good O'l days when the ORANGE sleeved TV time out guy was used for manipulation, things were much simpler in those days and the game was perceived fair but OH waht a turn the future has brought........

I have to slightly disagree, DIC. While I DO think that some manipulation is going on, you can't tell me that Rog doesn't call up the officials and tell them how he'd like an important game to go, manipulating games only attracts gamblers who are in on the fix. If too many gamblers believe games are fixed and they're not in on it, then less people will gamble.

One of my favorite books is the biography of Meyer Lansky, the comptroller of the Mafia from the 1930's through the 50's. He also supervised the Mafia's casinos in NY, FL, and Cuba. The Hyman Roth character in Godfather 2 was based on him. One of the things he insisted on was that the casinos be honest. Idea being that most of the time the house is going to win anyway and if people had a good time they would come back and gamble some more. If people felt they got ripped off from a fixed game, they would not come back.

I hear what you are saying Ron but might add....... If sixteen games are being played, allowing for point spreads, there is manipulation so thus achieving point spreads but not on all games. The money over n under needs to be lost or won pending on $$coin$$ difference. Not all games are equally bet money wise. It's the 0-3/4/5 games with the biggest financial impact of which final outcome will be determined. Some by points spread achievement but very few by outright win / loss. The un affected games still need their controversy to cover the controversy on the other games. It's totally a de epitome and may never be totally figured out and that is what's being counted on. We as fans can see simple "fixes" to the game but those simple fixes take away manipulability of the game. Why has the NFL not hired full time ref's, need controversy, / why not better replay, need controversy, / why not better ball placement, need controversy / the list can go on and on but you can see my drift.

Like you said, no one needs to know it's being manipulated and they keep that controversial **** in the fore front to camaflodge the reality. Honesty just isn't in the GREED NFL machine. The sand is to wet so my head stays above the line.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but the horsehit that happened during the GB/Detroit game was blatantly wrong and manipulated the outcome of that game. The fact that there is no recourse for an obvious blown call is ridiculous in this day and age.

There are all these complex girations of stats on every single position. I wish someone did a real study of the Pat's and refs. I mean I can think of like one game several years ago I think against the Seahawks or the Pack where I felt jesus they got screwed there. That literally happens a minimum of once per season to the Steelers. I'm not talking about total penalties. I'm talking about big moment controversial ref calls that can change the course of the game one way or the others. Love to see that.

So, how is the use of technology, simplification of the rule book, and millions of fans listening to decisions live, increasing manipulation of the sport? It doesn't. Gambling is ruining sports...it completely ruined boxing. Trashed it completely.

Of course, this conversation comes towards the end of marcia's career. How many trophies would they have had it not been for favorable calls for them? Too little, too late.
