Would Jimmy Johnson mentor Tomlin? Would Tomlin accept it?

My thing with him is it won't be solved in training camp. It would only be solved in week whatever you need him to kick a game winner.
They better hold onto both kickers if Wright proves capable. Or replace Boz. One of the two.

The team should not put them in the place where Boz is needed.

Not exactly sure what you mean, but the Patriots won I believe three of their SB's with the finishing points coming from Vinateri. Your kicker and your confidence in him is everything. So if you are saying he probably shouldn't be there I agree 100%. If you are saying it doesn't matter. It clearly does.

Boz is the biggest question mark IMO, that they need to solve in training camp.

Shades with Good Boz: 13-3 with 4 games won in the last minute or with a FG on the last play.
Shades with Bad Boz: 9-6-1.

Shades also benefited in 2017 from one of the friendlier travel schedules and QBs faced in recent memory. They didn't travel further west than Chicago (a loss), and managed to miss a slew of good QBs who were injured (Watson and Luckless come to mind). Squeaked out a win in Detroit against a lowly Lions squad. In hindsight, no surprise they got handled 2X by the Jaguars at home and have trended down the past 3 years. 13-3 was a mirage that masked Shades' serious warts.

We didn't make the playoffs. Steelers were a top 5 offense. I don't see how you can conclude that the D was good enough.

The Stats are what they are. D stats look pretty good, but #28 in the league in TO margin is dreadful. It's how the San Diego Chargers missed the playoffs with the #1O & #1D (and horrid ST). We ain't the first.

Here is the thing Cope. Obviously, stats are king in most arguments. A middle pack defense SHOULD have been more than good enough with that offense to get the job done in winning the division. ......But when you watched and looked at it, it wasn't. They couldn't close out games against Cleveland with a 14 point 4th quarter lead. The Chargers, Saints, Raiders and Broncos were all similar. They closed out against the Pats, but I don't really remember a whole lot else. If they could have closed 2 of those, I would say that those stats would have been relevant. Because of that, i have them in the lower third.

I remember some bad TOs in those games. JuJu fumbling as we were driving to win in the 4th against NO, lost by 3. Grimble fumbling at the goalline in Oakland turning a would be TD into a loss of possession, lose by 3. 3rd and goal, one minute to play in Denver. Ben throws a pick, lose by 7 (also miss a FG, have a fumble and another INT). Cleveland was 3ints a missed FG to win and a late Fumble. Clowney was possessed that game as well. Hats off to him.

San Diego game I'd hang on the D. Couldn't stop them when it mattered.

Even with that, if this team didn't turn the ball over, they were easily in the playoffs, and could have gone far.

Totally agree, but if in any of those games the defense made a very timely play. Over. And you have seen that happen many, probably countless times watching this team. Didn't happen.

Absolutely correct. And the job of the head coach is to figure out what horse he will hitch the wagon to. Yet Boz is still here. And I will say this if Boz sucks again this year Tomlin should be gone on that alone. There is not a chance Boz is back if I'm coaching this team. All I need from a kicker is good enough. He was horrible. And the body language was worse.

If Boz is back I put it more on Colbert. They might have to keep him because of the salary cap hit.

What SD team was that? Also even if true that wasn't the Steelers last year. Their defense wasn't near #1. But basically you are saying if the offense just played almost perfectly then they are in the playoffs even with this bad defense. The offense was 7th overall in drives ending with a TO. The offense was 32nd in the league in starting field position. While the defense was 7th. Which means the offense gets horrible field position from their defense but the defense gets great field position from the offense.

Last year the defense just wasn't good at all. They gave up 22.5 PPG and collapsed in the 4th qtr when the offense gave them a lead. I'm not blaming the offense for not making the playoffs last year. They were clearly the best part of the team.

2018 can be blamed on missed fg's and turnover differential. I believe we were 28th in turnover differential with -11. The offense turned it over a lot and the defense didn't takeaway enough.
Offense gave up 9 fumbles in 2018, that's quite a high number from recent years.

How many games did we lose because of Boswell's misses (I know the answer just brining this to light)??? The answer is MORE THAN two (2) games. It takes a team effort to win games - it takes MISTAKES to easily lose games (and it's kinda hard to beat the refs, who are blind to false starts and such)...

You could also say we lost two game due to poor coaching. Riddle me this, why did Tomlin keep Boswell? He could have cut him and if he did maybe we lost one game less and make the playoffs. Coaching...

Salary cap hit. That's the only reason.

Kickers can be easily replaced. And just about every one in the NFL was better than Boz last year. Does a 800k free agent kicker bust a cap of 188.2 million ( 2019 cap number? ) Not in my book.

I'm not sure if Boswell can snap out of it. Maybe he can, maybe he cannot. I am sure he cost us games, and should have been replaced in 2018. Had Tomlin hooked him we would have won one more game, giving the Steelers a chance for another championship.

We've got Ben for maybe 2 more good years. Pissing away what's left of his prime with bad kicking and lousy coaching should not be tolerated.

It's not what a new kicker costs, it's Boz's cap hit because they just signed him for big money after the 2017 season. You'd have to pay a new kicker AND still pay Boz a good chunk of his contract.

It's about 8 years too late for that.

Jimmy Johnson didn’t exactly run a tight ship. He was well known for letting his players do whatever they wanted so long as they produced. He actively encouraged the poor sportsmanship at Da U. He loved the swagger.

JJ also gave an interview once where he talked about treating players differently. He was asked what he’d do if a player fell asleep in a meeting. He said if he’s a backup, he’d cut his ***. Then when asked what if it was Emmitt, Jimmy said he’d quietly wake him up then continue the meeting.

That’s the exact kind of double standard treatment that blew up the AB situation.

Here’s what Jimmy would have as advice
Inherit HOF WR from previous coach.
Go 1-15 then draft a hall of fame QB with first pick.
Find some stupid team to trade you a shitload of picks for an aging RB
Get lucky drafting an OT from a small school that somehow becomes a HOF caliber player.
Play the Bills in the Super Bowl

They moved Boswell's roster bonus back to week 1 because otherwise he was getting cut. It would be painful to cut him and eat 3.6m in dead money next year. If you can find a reliable UDFA cast off type(like Boswell was) you do it in a second. But he would need to be clearly better. I assume that's their thinking anyways.
