The reason I ask is I saw Jimmy Johnson, a Football life, and its clear his ability to command respect from the players and motivate them was tremendous. An astute evaluator of talent, a master speaker, and a man who's keenly aware of his time outs, Johnson runs something of a private coaching clinic in Key West Florida, with current head coaches such as Bill Belichick stopping by for visits.

If you haven't heard of Johnson's speech on how he handles his players, you should. Or you should listen to the players comment on him. He struck the perfect balance between stroking his guys and having them fear him or at the very least become very aware his eyes are always on you. The Cowboys had their share of divas on their championship teams, but it never stopped them from focusing on winning.

Another thing that stood out is Jimmy said hit me on the head real hard with a hammer the next time I take a dumb guy. Oh, I hated the 1990's Cowboys, but they were that good. The Steelers pick low IQ / iffy character types too often.

Back to Belichick, I'd say he took much of what Jimmy said and runs his team the same way. He can take a Randy Moss type, and get the most out of him.

1 ) Would Tomlin accept this type of help? He has declined help in the form of a time outs coach before.

2 ) Would Jimmy offer it to him?

I think more importantly is this..............

If you have to bring in "serious mentor" help at this stage of Tomlin's career, you need to replace him. I'm all for better coaching / coordinators / position / challenges / but eventually you have nothing left for the HEAD COACH and that is why I say replace him.

I always thought Jimmy Johnson was somewhat of a clown. Steelers should never want Cowboys help.

I saw that piece too, and loved the segment with JJ and BB on the boat and both Amen-ing the "Hit me on the head with a hammer" Cardinal Rule of not taking low football IQ guys. Any Steelers fans of recent vintage years would have to naturally think of Tomlin and his "mic drop" culture that metastasized under Young Money.

JJ likely would not offer, and most assuredly Tomlin would not accept help from a resurrected Vince Lombardi himself.

But like was mentioned already, if you have to ask for this kind of remedial help in year 13 (or have a Time outs Coach, Challenges Coach, or Clock Coach), how much do you really have to work with in the first place when it comes to the finer points of the craft?

Actually if Tomlin was going to suck up his pride the real move would have been (and I will have to preface it with I' don't know how Lebeau is, he is 81 years old) Dick Lebeau. He was the architect of this defense. The way he called it with aggression is exactly what they need. He was fired because the stars on the defense aged and the replacements either weren't good enough or not ready and Tomlin meddled with his bullshit Tampa-2 If you put this defensive personnel with him, you are top 5, no doubt in my mind.

That FOX interview a few years ago where Tomlin bristled at the "Player's Coach" typecast? And then kind of threw "the OWG" Lebeau under the bus out of the blue? Leads me to believe Tomlin wouldn't be so eager to receive mentoring from DL.

If anything personified or was emblematic of low football IQ last year, it was Grimble at the goal line in Denver, and Nix mic dropping after coming up short on the fake punt in NO. You wouldn't see a BB or JJ coached team lose a playoff bid in such a boneheaded way.

But Tomlin set the standard by talking about the Pats the previous season. Showboating and similar expression was modeled and enabled.

Deep down I think the amount of respect DL got from the players ruffled Tomlin's feathers. Tomlin doesn't have the chops to call defense he simply doesn't. He is too proud to get help and the team is too stubborn to admit that he should bear the responsibility of the failures.

Tomlin, like any coach, should have his own mentors or coaches that he goes to. My guess is Tomlin would go to someone like Dungy before he would seek out Jimmy Johnson.

I think chuck noll would be a great mentor to him. Other than the obvious reason

Isnt he dead?

I don't think he himself, body wise is dead but I sure do know that his hairdo is definitely DEAD. Died years ago

Hoodie still visits Jimmy Johnson to talk football. Point is even if you won the most super bowls there’s always room for more leaning.

If it happened, Tomlin could improve in lots of areas he’s weak in.

Some Colts fans think Peyton Manning was their best coach.
