Round 5 Zach Gentry

James is more athletic by a significant amount. He was also much stronger.

Jesse James
40 - 4.83
3 cone 7.53
vertical - 37.5
broad jump 121
bench reps 26

Zach Gentry
40 - 4.9
3 cone 7.4
vertical - 29.5
broad jump 110
bench reps 12

James tested out significantly higher in all the key explosion metrics except 3 cone and neither was good in the 3 cone. But you can't expect guys as tall as them to be good at the 3 cone.

Gentry seems like a project. Maybe he'll be good in a few years. He needs to hit the weight room
Some good points. Looks like the two are closer athletically than I first thought. We shall see how it unfolds.

Steelers like to pick clones of successful players: Johnson similar to AB, Snell similar to Bell, Gentry similar to James

Watched some game film on youtube. I have nothing against this pick. Fills/improves a roster spot (#2/#3 TE). Picked at the right time of the draft. Upside and higher ceiling than Spaeth in my opinion and that was a 3rd rounder.

Moves better than I expected for being 6'8". Is not all arms and legs. Good build. NFL strength and conditioning coaches and full time work will help him a lot. Even a 20% increase in strength and explosion will pay huge dividends to his on-field play. Better blocker than I thought. Does not anchor well but blocks on the move well. Keeps head up. Finds and centers target. Good at crackdown blocks and counters, both of which the Steelers use in their system.

I think the kid makes the roster and eventually could move into the #2 roll and get 50% snap count type participation. Would not be a bad outcome at all.

1 of those 3 doesn't fit your point, Snell style has nothing in common with Bell except the last three letters on his jersey

Bell in college compared to bell as a pro were two diff backs. Remember he lost about 20 lbs when he was drafted.

He's a big target. I like that. Lets see what the kid can do. James had too many drops for my liking. TE is a spotty position for us given the injury concerns of Vanimal

My thoughts on j.james was that he was in athletic after his catches. Mc Donald is better.

Gentry looks much more athletic and quick than James. I thin. I think he makesroster.

The only thing Bell is blocking now, is his arteries...

The TE position is scary. Let’s not forget that Vance has a long injury history, and if he gets hurt, the steelers are screwed because Gentry isn’t ready to step in. Grimble is nothing. Can’t rely on him for anything.

I think they need to watch the waiver wire and sign a vet, a guy that can block

I would feel comfy if I had more confidence in Grimble. I wouldn't mind replacing him with a proven vet....

Wasn’t Jake McGee in the conversation about supplanting Grimble and making the roster out of camp until he got hurt? He could be a surprise.

I think they will. But it sorta seems like Fichtner may not quite value the TE like Haley did. That's a completely off-the-cuff opinion.
