Round 5 Zach Gentry

Well he will need to be if he wants to sport an avatar and have game time access.

I think he's a Jessie James 2.0.
Not too excited about this pick really.
He is more athletic than Jesse. Blocking probably not as good due to him being raw at the position. But 500 yards last year showed some production. I think he will be a decent addition after he gets his feet wet.

I hope he does make it as he's from my hometown. Not a lot of guys make it big.
Rooting for him sure. But still not sold. That's what training and learning the playbook is for though, development.

At his size, he has potential.

Watching game film on Gentry, he actually doesn’t look half as bad as I thought as a blocker. It is a mixed bag and he needs to get stronger and improve technique. Steelers will coach him up and he’ll add strength in the program, no doubt. Maybe the Steelers knew what they were doing picking this kid.

Yeah he looks like an effort blocker. Not surprising he isn't a stud at that skill with being a ex QB.

Not out of the realm of a possibility he gets coached up and becomes solid in that area...

Interesting he had a lot of drops in one game (OSU). Wonder what the problem was that day......

Hopefully he will get better playing with a REAL QB. That MSU QB sucked ***.

He has only played TE 2 years and made big leap in play from year 1 to 2. Seems to have strong work ethic. Ran a 4.9 40 at combine, but ran 4.6 to 4.7 range at
his Pro Day. I think he could be the Steeler sleeper pick of this draft. With college out of the way, could make another leap in his progression.

Haven’t looked through the archives but wasn’t Outlaw considered PS materials, but made the roster his rookie season? Didn’t he end up starting the next year because Green was still on the PUP?

Maybe Gentry can follow suit.

James wasn't very good as a rookie and even his second year was hot and cold. Still developed into a nice No. 2 tight end.

Yep. Very reliable by the end of his tenure. This kid definitely shows effort in his blocking, he just needs work with technique etc. Some of his snags though, very promising looking. Looks like a better receiving option than James at the same time in their careers.

But that's pretty normal for TE. It tends to be one of the tougher positions to play as a rookie. That's because many colleges don't even really use TEs and the ones that do use tend to either use them as a big WR or as an extra OL. As a result, there are very few complete TEs coming out each year.

That's what worries me so much about them letting James leave and not signing a vet. I think Hock and Irv Smith can start immediately as a traditional TE-Y and Fant can start as a TE-F but the rest of them? I think Moreau could start and be a good blocker but a marginal receiver.

Gentry is a project. He's not that great of an athlete and it is tough for guys that tall to block

James is more athletic by a significant amount. He was also much stronger.

Jesse James
40 - 4.83
3 cone 7.53
vertical - 37.5
broad jump 121
bench reps 26

Zach Gentry
40 - 4.9
3 cone 7.4
vertical - 29.5
broad jump 110
bench reps 12

James tested out significantly higher in all the key explosion metrics except 3 cone and neither was good in the 3 cone. But you can't expect guys as tall as them to be good at the 3 cone.

Gentry seems like a project. Maybe he'll be good in a few years. He needs to hit the weight room

Tape, fyi Gentry ran 4.6/4.7 at pro day and upped his bench reps to 16. Regardless, I agree with you he needs to put in plenty of work w strength & conditioning.
