Yes, pal, they get a free ride. I say this as a parent who had two kids play Division 1 sports, and who nonetheless had to pay about $300,000 total for my kids' educations.

Real money, pal. Wife and I paid it and believe me, if our kids could have received free tuition, room, board, books, etc. we would have taken it.

Curious, could the athlete be on a six year program to graduate. Taking 3 classes a year type thing and still be scholarship after football eligibility is over. That sounds more reasonable.

You are an embarrassment. Yeah, right, only football players work hard at their sport. Where does the United States get the best swimmers, and divers, and gymnasts, and wrestlers, etc. in the world? I guess from students who piddle around a couple of hours per week at their sports.

I can tell you as a fact that my son spent at least 3 hours per day, basically year-round, on his sport (baseball), and my daughter spent at least 3 hours per day, year-round, on her sport (diving). She and my son would also then spend much more than 3 hours per day in-season when they traveled to away games or away meets. The time also does not include the 2 weeks daughter spent in the Tropics (warmer weather) before the season, or the running or weight training.

So call it 3-4 hours per day, on average, year-round. You DO get that all college athletes train while out-of-season, right?

Oh, and my kids also studied real subjects, in two of the most demanding schools in the nation, and did not take Medieval juggling and remedial ***-picking as classes - unlike about 50% of the Alabama football roster.

Steeler Pride did not point out that his daughter went to arguably the best undergraduate school in the world while competing for four years at a Div. 1 school - I did. As to the time she spent on her sport, see above.

I certainly know a ton-**** more about my daughter's schedule, competition, training, academic demands, etc. than you could or would know. I was there. Wife and I visited her regularly, watched her compete, watched her compete in the Junior Olympics with and against future Olympians, watched her dive in college.

And the way her schedule worked, she did not have 6 classes per semester (school operated on semester system). She generally had four classes per semester, and the classes (like most college courses) were lecture classes, which included study time and group-study options. She was in class about 4-5 hours per day, but if she had a lab, that would be closer to 6 hours per day. She would generally get up at 5:30 a.m., get to the pool at 6:00 a.m., warm up and practice, or condition training including weights and running, or practice for about an hour to an hour and a half, classes beginning around 9:00 a.m., classes done about 3:00 p.m., back to pool, diving until about 5:30 p.m., then study time.

Weekends were study, conditioning, and practice. Sometimes weekend labs.

So that was her schedule - for which wife and I paid a @#$%-ton of money for the privilege. If she could have gone to school for free, trust me, dude, we would have considered that a salary with a value of about $38,000 per year. Not a bad salary. Not bad at all.
