Limas Sweed Suffering from Brain Disorders

If college athletes are paid actual money, they become PROFESSIONAL athletes. College is not meant to be a PROFESSION unless of course you are a professor at said college.
Please spare me the “these poor kids are on strict regiments where they can’t earn a real degree” BS. Tell that to the student athletes at Stanford and Notre Dame and other schools that have strict GPA requirements. Remember Myron Rolle? Rhodes Scholar AND starting safety for Florida State Seminoles.
I’ve NEVER heard any player say, “I wanted to study medicine/law/engineering but they told me no because I’m an athlete. Outrageous.
My 8 year old son plays sports for his school. During games, they sell apparel and refreshments. They also have fundraisers throughout the year that go towards his sports, and also the school. So, my son and his classmates do ALL the work and play all the games that drive these sales. Yet these poor kids don’t see a dime of these profits. They don’t pay my kid one red cent of ALL the money they rake in. And the wife and I pay this private school tuition. My poor slave son. ( again, sarcasm....THICK ).

I think the NCAA makes a ton of money off these young athletes and yet won't pay them a dime. Bell had it right about slavery just he accused the wrong Venue. Limas should make it a class action suit similar to cigaret industries.

Salute nation

They are paid... 100K dollar education, travel, food, clothing etc.

They can always skip college and go play in europe

Way to run your pie hole about something you know nothing about. Swimmers and Divers usually have the same requirements as any other sport. The swimmers I knew in college were in some form of training 6-7 hours a day.

Bullshit, if you think divers are training to the same level as big time college athletes you are stupidly talking out of your ***. Tell me what time your incredible daughter got up to go to lift weights, team meetings, etc. She did not work 6 or 7 hours a day go to school and study at the BEST college in America, I call bullshit. But then again you know it all.

Just because you’re not watching/following the sport doesn’t mean they aren’t training as hard as the ones you do.
While the training techniques used may be different, the time spent would be the same, if comparing too similarly motivated and competitive athletes from different sports.
My niece got a full ride to college as a swimmer. She told me what her typical days consisted of and I got to experience some of it myself on a visit.
GRUELING, PUNISHING, and STRICT.
It’s dismissive to think divers aren’t “big time college athletes”.

You really believe a college diver is comparable to a college football player in terms of time spent training etc. College football players have strict structure on their time and are not even allowed to major in certain disciplines as it takes too much time away from their main purpose in college to play football and make money.

i can give you examples of college football players who are also Deans List students bit the vast majority of college players at big time football schools are either unable to do the required schoolwork or not capable of excelling academically

This is stupid talk...

You would be wrong. Divers may train hard but college diving is not year round training and regimented to the degree NCAA football is, care to see the schedules of the two and then get back to me. Diving is an individual sport and is not mandated the same way or degree as big time football. For you to compare the two says more about your lack of knowledge . Talk to a nybody who has been around a college football team and they will laugh at your assertions.

She graduated with honors from the best college in the world (as far as I am concerned), is now a doctor.

Really curious ST, what college? And to the rest of your post, great people & family getting great things done. Congrats on all of it.

Just shut the **** up while you are behind and quit digging. Every college sport is a year round commitment and all train 6-7 hours a day. That is a fact. Talk to anybody that has competed in sports at a D1 level and they will laugh at your ignorant jibberish.

So I just want to get this straight. You freely admit the college athlete is training 6 to seven hours a day. Now if they take 4 classes of one hour a day with 15 minutes a day between classes that is 5 hours of classes. So on the low end you are looking at 11 hours of training/ practice and classes. Now anyone who knows anything about high performance athletes knows they need a minimum of 10 hours sleep. So you are up to 21 accounted hours per day. So factor in eating even hurried, you are down to 2 hours with which to keep up with 4 classes. **** some of those classes 2 hours wouldn't cut it for 1 or 2 classes. Oh and perhaps maybe have some type of a life. Jeez thanks for making my point. And I'm not saying it can not be done. Clearly it can. But if I'm working 6-7 hours a day, I'd hardly call anything free about that.

How much are you paying the players? Are we paying the guys at UMass the same as the players at Alabama? Are you paying the face of the team that is marketed on ESPN the same as the walk on who won't see a snap in four years? What about the other sports, are they getting paid even though their sports operate at a deficit? Are we taking money from football to pay other athletes?

No nobody is getting paid. I would say that money should be set aside for those athletes who cannot cut the academics of a university and do not graduate to access for maybe a one year trade course/ apprentice program. I would say that NCAA should be held more accountable for anything that happened knowingly with CTE, because these guys were not paid to play. Most importantly, people should always understand that a scholarship is not a free ride.

A scholarship is a "free ride" in terms of financial benefits. If you go to college, the expectation is that you are going to have to work and work hard. For an athlete, it's going to classes and training. For a traditional student, it's classes and research or unpaid internships.

There is no student athlete degree vs. traditional student degree. The student athlete has to do everything anyone else does. When they graduate there might be some name recognition alumni benefit in entering the workforce. Now I don't know if it was a Canadian going to an NCAA school or not, but I know two people with kids on full scholarships in the US. One played hockey in the New York State and the other is going down for baseball in West Virginia. Both had to pay far more (like 17k) then they would have for regular tuition here. Keeping in mind that they are fed and housed though. I believe in both cases they had to make full disclosure of their income and the cost was based upon that. Again, not sure if that is because they are Canadians or not.

You also forgot to factor in the study time which of course since his daughter went to the best school in the nation and is now a doctor I would think she would be a fastidious student so lets give her 4 hours a day studying. Plus you need to factor in personal time to run errands, socialize, etc. This wonder woman was sleeping and doing all these things on 2 or 3 hours a night sleep, amazing.

I'm definitely not here to question anyone's real life experience with a scholarship child. My point is very straightforward. NCAA scholarships are not free. There is a price to be paid for everything. While I'm sure many take great advantage of it, many are not capable of doing so. They are commodities for the program. A lot end up with no degree or are virtually forced to take joke classes that get nothing after the FREE RIDE is over.

Never tried gruyere. The dubliner is tasty.

Anywhore, about this Limas guy.....

your ignorance is noted, As has been detailed in this thread there is no way she is spending 6 to 7 hours a day training while being pre med. By the way even Olympic level divers don't spend 6 or 7 hours a day training year round. There is a point of diminished returns and burnout.

I am also black and the boy comes from the condescending prick calling me kid. Nice try on the racist thing but Bermuda is a boy.

Yep, college football players are steered into certain majors and denied the ability to even try certain difficult and time consuming majors. They end up getting no degree or a bullshit degree after being used by the colleges. Most big time college athletes are also not good students and are not accepted to the colleges under the normal academic standards of the school. Argue all you want but his daughter being a doctor is not typical of most big time athletic scholarship players.
