Kyler Murray. Top college quarterback. How will he do in the NFL?
I'm guessing Murray be one of the major draft stories. I admit to being a fan of his in college but can be an NFL quarterback at 5'10" tall, with a semi-low release?
Pro: He looks more like a quick point guard type of quarterback. Tough to sack, quick and elusive and as runner. The arm looks very good, but not great. Accuracy is impressive but a bit inflated due to the system he is in. Many of the mobile types of QBs are not accurate, Murray is. Seems like a good leader.
Con: He looks like he won't be able to take too many hits given his size, and playing style and that is a problem as he likes to run the ball. Might struggle to throw over the middle in the short to medium range due to his height. Offensive coordinator will need to move him around to open up his passing windows. Fumbled 3 times last year, losing two of them. Only one year of production in the BIG 12, which isn't exactly known for defense. Production as a freshman in the SEC was poor.
Coach's call: He'll energize the fan base, and might be a top 15-20 type of QB for a few years, but he's not a franchise type of QB. Most likely to be picked inside the top 16, which means he won't be going to a good team. I think Miami will roll the dice on him. To succeed I think Murray is going to need Drew Brees quick reads and lack to overcome his lack of size as a passer. My thoughts are a late first round to second round type of talent, but he's a quarterback.
Teams should wise up on QB's. If your former first-round pick isn't very good ( Say not a top 15 guy ) after 3-4 seasons, don't be foolish and pay him 20+ million with a long term deal with a tremendous hit on the cap if you cut him! Just do not re-sign the QB, and pick a new QB in round one. It's much cheaper and allows the team to build in other areas.
