Stats from last night

Berry 2 punts, 41.0 avg. 1 inside the 20 yard line

Wile. 3 punts. 48.3 avg. 2 inside the 20 yard line.

I also noticed Wile held for kicks.

Wile did play in the first pre-season game. 2 punts for 48 yard average. 1 inside the 20, 1 fair catch.
Berry's stats in the first pre-season game 3 punts. 41.7 avg. 1 inside the 20.

Summary: Based on the pre-season games, Wile is the better. He's got a better leg, is more consistent, and seems better at forcing fair catches

While should get the job. Berry is not impressive this year and he wasn’t that great last year either.

Based on what you posted alone and the fact we know Berry is a below average NFL punter based on his previous seasons, I'd keep Wile. He really can't be any worse. Can he?

The Steelers are set to pay Berry, a below average punter 1.9 million a year. Wile not only looks to be better, he's likely 1/3 of the cost.

The 4th game could pick the winner. If Wile out plays Berry again, we've got a new punter.

Only you can watch Berry kick last night and think he isn't a punter. Berry coffin kicked a punt inside the 10, and booted a 52 yarder.

Wile had 2 punts coming from long field situations, thus the higher average.

Wile is not passing him on this team.

Fate is in the hand of the writer. Stats are ONLY a part of the picture but the real picture is ACTUAL game play and circumstance of the play which contribute to the stat(s). I think Berry's head leans to one side as of the weight combined with the size is definately a cause to cut him.

Cope, as usual you have a great way of pointing out reality. Now about that land I have for sale near the ocean with a view..........................

Berry seems to have gotten more inconsistent the longer he has been with the team starting last season. He hits some good ones, but he has way too many shanks for an NFL punter. An upgrade might be in order. They should have Wile play the whole game next week to get a larger sample size and then make the decision.

I like Berry, but he's a below average punter. Best man gets the job.

Berry sucks balls. He had a 31 and 25 yarder last week.

Cope is partially right of the points he makes. Who is the better directional punter, who has the best hangtime?

In truth I am not convinced about either punter. And the answer should come from outside the origination IMO.

I just wonder if the Steelers are at the point they want to make a change. Or are they willing to live with Berry's inconsistencies........

Golf clap. Dumb thread.

Wile looks to have better hang time, and more likely to force fair catches. As for who can pin it better inside the ten, I don't know. But I do think Wile has a better leg and has played better this pre-season

So the fact that Berry has shanked 4 punts in the last two games and had multiple shanks last season isn't concerning? I think it would be dumb to not consider an upgrade.

If Matt Wile wins the job the Steelers save $1,352,000.00 in cap space. Not only has he played better, he's about 1/3 of the cost.

IMO, Wile has a better leg, is less likely to shank and punts, and forces more fair catches based on superior hang time . Berry might be a little better downing punts inside the 10 yard line

I thought the kid did a good job Saturday. Kicks deep and nice hang time. Let’s see what he does Thursday night. If he has another good outing I’d keep him and let Berry go.
I think he was the holder on Boz’s FG’s as well.
Berry is nothing special.

Why not a punting competition?

If Berry is not performing to what he should and it is consistent - which it seems to be this preseason - and another punter is playing better, I think you have to go with the hot hand. Special teams will be very important for the Steelers, considering the skepticism of the defense. Can't afford to give the opposition free field position every time. If Berry stinks in the final preseason game I think you go with Wile. Punter and Kicker are two very volatile positions with very little forgiveness. A guy misses a kick and it's almost like his job is gone. Same for an inconsistent punter. Steelers can also always free up some money which can't ever hurt.

Todd "toss sweep on 4th and 1" Haley is no longer calling plays...won't need a punter this year anyway. Just go for it, the odds are in our favor!

Here's the only way to know if your pipe dream is possible:

Will Berry punt in game 4?

If he punts, there may be open competition. If he doesn't punt, the Steelers have already decided to keep Berry.

I'm betting he doesn't even punt on Thursday.

Never liked Berry, does not have big leg, a punishing leg, or a crushing leg....Besides, if he was the punter we really needed he would have a nickname....

Like "Berry Crush".....Awww what could have been

I don’t think it’s that black and white.

Tomlin said that it is an open position during his press conference. I think Wile will walk out of Heinz field with the position on Thursday.

I hope so. Wile showed better hang time and a better leg. If there was a hang time stat, I'm pretty sure Wile > Berry. In addition Wile is much cheaper. It should be an easy decision for Tomlin to make

Final pre season stats:

Berry - 12 punts 42.9 average, 35.1 net average, 4 inside the 20, 0 fair catches

Wile - 8 punts, 49.0 average, 48.8 net average, 4 inside the 20, 2 fair catches.

Berry had 3 bad punts in the first two games.

He had 3 punts in the first game. one for 59, one for 42 (from the 45, so short was good) and one for 24

In the GB game he also had punts of 58, 65 and 56 yards along with the two terrible shanks.Seems like the leg is there.

TN first punt only goes for 35yards. But it was from the 43, so downed at the 8. Makes his average look bad, but was a good punt. Second punt 52 yards.
That game, Wile punts from the Pit 16 (58 yards), the Pit 43 (41 yards) and the Pit 36 (47 yards). Not one punt on the TN side of the field.

Last night, Berry punts once from the 50. 36 yards. Could have been better, but puts Carolina inside the 20, so doesn't suck.
Wile punts from the pit 15 (50 yards) and from the Pit 25 (46 yards)

Wile has one kick from inside the opponents territory. PHI 48 yard line.

Berry may have some warts, but, when you have to punt inside the opponent's territory, he can keep it out of the endzone. We do not know if Wile can do that or not. Obviously, Berry can boot some nice ones, too,

As far as the run backs that mess up Berry's net, were those bigger ones due to poor hang-time or just ****** tackling? If his hang-time was poor, but there was a tackler right there, seems like hang-time is irrelevant.
