By: G.Stryker SteelerNation.com Only two quarterbacks played against the Green Bay Packers, and both threw a pick 6 on their very first throws. Not the way you want to start your day, but at least both quarterbacks had a chance to lead the offense to multiple touchdowns after their mistakes. The players: 1) Ben Roethlisberger […]

In a word NO. Josh Dobbs is a full year ahead of Mason Rudolph. If they thought Dobbs could be the guy down the road they would not have drafted Rudolph. They may try to move Dobbs for some value or they may expose him to waivers and hope he makes it through. Stash him on the PS and let Landry Jones walk next year. If Rudolph and Dobbs end up still on the roster next season then it is an open competition as it should be. You cannot cut Rudolph based upon him playing against ones before he was ready. They did the same thing with Dobbs last year to horrible results.

Cut not a chance. If someone one offers a 2nd round pick for him, then perhaps a trade.

Best guess they try to trade Dobbs

"Will the Steelers cut Mason Rudolph?"

Umm, no. Dobbs hasnt exactly been performing at a spectacular level himself.

I don't see Mason outright cut. I see a pressed trade of Dobbs and if not then Hopefully PS. At one time I thought Jone's was the ODD man out but now I think we need to keep him. If for some reason at mid season you can move him (Jones) then take a look at that. I hope rudolf takes back the #3. Thank's G. For the article.

Cut? Really? Ummm...No.

One of them will come down with a mysterious injury to be placed on IR

0 chance they cut Rudolph. You have to be smoking something to even think that is a possibility.

Not sure why any other team would do that. Stillers won't keep 4 active QB's so they will try and hide one one the PS.
If a team really wants and needs who ever is placed there, they would sign him.

With only 3 legit WRs, and that gives Washington (the rook) the benefit of the doubt as "legit" I'd give Dobbs a look as a slash player. QB sneaks and a few gadget plays as a WR. He could also be valuable running a scout offense with mobile QBs as well. If he showed any potential I'd have to think hard about him as the 5th WR-slash. I figure Hunter gets the 4 spot and Patterson/Tucker to ps. So essentially a 4th QB-slash player costs DHB a spot...I'm ok with that.

Then when the QB injuries happen to a team you can trade a QB. Dobbs won't make ps and Rudolph won't be cut. So if we want something for a QB we would need to carry them on the roster, at least for a minute.

With that being said, like Apex said...who really cares about 3/4 QB spots with our holes in the D

I highly doubt we would carry Dobbs as our 5th WR/Slash type player. I say highly doubt as in 100% positive. :)

DHB has the worst hands on the team, and he's 100% better than Dobbs as a receiver. DHB might not make the team, but Dobbs will not make this roster as a receiver.

Every WR we have on the team likely has better hands than Dobbs, and likely run better route trees.

My point was after our top 3 WRs we have Hunter (disappeared after good preseason last year), DHB (a special teamer with bad hands), Eli (destination PUP), Patterson (potential but not ready) and a couple guys that might land a ps role somewhere or other.

The value Dobbs could bring running scout team, QB sneaks, and a couple gadgets...then possibly used as trade bait when injuries pile up could be more than the value DHB (my projected 5th WR) brings to special teams.

My point was not to make Dobbs a WR, or that he is better at WR than DHB. My point was towards how to utilize roster spots and the value he could bring may be more than the very little we know DHB brings. I also know we will not do this, and we will carry more than 4 WRs.

This would also be a positive cap equity play, but that is neither here nor there. Many potential positives with this play, as well as potential negatives.

I agree, I know we won't too. Steelers are so steady in their operations I'd be shocked by some out of the box thinking (carry 4QBs and 4WRs because that is the talent they put on the roster).

I'd say there is a 5-10% chance they do keep 4QBs and 5 WRs though, costing a backend of the roster S or LB a spot.

So True Cope
I wonder if other fan bases seize on insignificant things and play them out for more than 20+ years. Kordell Stewart was a nice little wrinkle, but he had less than 700 yds receiving for a career. Less than 300 yards receiving in the AFC Champ season. They got to the SB because of LLoyd, Brown, Kirkland and Greene which has to rank as one of the best LB corps all time. They had steady receivers, a very good run game and a decent QB. Yet it always comes back to the search for the next Slash.
I wonder if Bears fans look at any fat **** that rolls into camp and say- He could be the next Fridge.

Rudolph showed good poise and command of the offense yesterday especially early on, properly hitting his checkdowns instead of forcing the ball downfield and also displayed the ability to fight through adverse situations like bad penalties and poor play by the 2nd team offensive line. He'll be fine.

Exactly, except for a couple ticky tack penalties that was a TD drive on the one for sure. He flattened out a little at the end but to me he looks like a lot of potential.

Rudolph was our 3rd round pick, no way he gets cut. Dobbs seems to be much improved and Landry is just Landry. Dobbs is much more athletic and seems to have more upside at this point so IMO Jones should be the odd man out.

Which is fine if you believe that Dobbs or Rudolph could hold down the fort for three weeks if needed. I just don't think the Steelers feel that way. I think they are gong to take there chances on Dobbs clearing and hope to sneak him on the PS. If he is taken they will find a veteran backup next year and Go Ben, Rudolph and the Veteran if Jones chooses to compete for a starting job.

Ideally we stash Dobbs on the PS this year and let him and Rudolph fight it out for the backup spot next year. As far as a trade goes, not sure anyone would give up more than a seventh to get him. He hasn't exactly lit it up this preseason.

I just read that Bells late arrival could lead to a roster exemption that would allow them to keep Dobbs an extra week thus increasing his chance to clear waivers.
