Preseason Week 1 Steelers at Eagles

It looks like Bostic is already passed Matakevich. It showed in the snaps during training camp.

I really liked what I saw with Mason. I liked his poise, decision making, and progressions. He will put balls on the ground with the 4th string center and him learning how to take snaps. That is expected this season. As long as he improves. Plus he had no tackles. Put him on the #2/3 lines and he will perform even better than Dobbs if he has to run with the 4s.

How do you all think Jon Bostic did last night? I can’t help it but to remember the open field tackle he missed on Ajayi, leaving them to a 30 yard gain or something. Too early I know, but I don’t know if Tyler can do better.

I would describe the game as uneventful. Nothing great happened and nothing really bad happened.

Sloppy as expected for a first preseason game but with so many key starters not playing at all, there weren’t a ton of revelations.

There were 2 negatives for me
1. James Conner pass blocking. He looked bad again. Yes, it was limited reps but for a guy whose offseason homework assignment was to get better at blocking, it’s not a good sign. If he can’t be a decent pass blocker, then he can’t play unless he’s just running out the clock in late game blowouts.

2. Backup Pass Rushers. Dupree and Watt are still questions themselves and the backups didn’t bring much heat either. The steelers need a pass rusher to step up and nobody has so far.

Positives
1. Bostic looks like he will be a good player. This is probably the biggest problem the steelers had to fix.

2. Secondary look much more athletic and better coached. Starters didn’t play but we didn’t see a bunch of blown coverages with 2 guys pointing at each other. They gave up 1 big play TD but that was just a guy getting beat and not a blown coverage.

Just watched the first half..

Toussaint was impressive and seems to be getting stronger and quicker year to year...

Number 44 looked very unimpressive...I thought we might of found a late round steal with Big Red, but he is what he is...a special teamer...

Mike Tomlin actually won a preseason game. Give him a raise. LOL

Anyway, didn't watch the game, but from the highlights and comments, looks like not a bad effort. But hey it's only the first game. Three more to go and lots of cuts to be made.

I will say that yesterday was probably the sharpest first pre season game I’ve seen the Steelers play in a long tine.

Agreed, we looked like dogshit against the Giants last year...

After watching the game today , reality took over. Steelers did not look very good, special teams were awful, take away the field goals. Tackling still not good, no pass rush. Tomlin takes Burns out, when he missed a tackle, was turned around on pass play, lucky ball was not thrown his way. Burns needs to be playing to get better, Tomlin takes him out as if he needs no work yet Sensabaugh is kept on field. Neither player has shown much. If not for a few good catches not much would be worth looking at.

Bro, lets be real- Mason did not outplay Dobbs. He looked incredibly shaky in the pocket (2 fumbles, <60% completion) and his intermediate/long balls had 0 zip. He has to show more, b/c I definitely did not see 'heir apparent'.

Dobbs looked hectic in the beginning, but he showed a ton of mettle, scrambling ability, and zip on the ball. Not to mention, that last drive and TD throw was perfect. He is showing to be a high ceiling/Low floor type of player which is exactly what you want in your prospective QB sitting on the bench.

Dobbs bounced back nicely, but he stares down his receivers and lacked some zip on his pick and nearly threw another pick because he stared his guy down and didn't have enough velocity on the pass.

Rudolph looked like a rookie quarterback in his first game. I don't think they put him in a lot of good spots with how they were calling plays, putting him in obvious passing situations.

Patterson looked good, young receivers make Ben smile cuz he know he's gonna need 30+ points a game with this defense.

Weaknesses: LBs both inside and outside until proven otherwise. Safety position still a lot of question marks.

DL, same ol slow sloppy weak ****

Pancaked, gutted by runs up the middle, Lb's faked outta their jocks on outside runs

Not a playmaker in sight on D, nobody that even warrants a double team - secondary might get some help this time, but still one good play, one bad play

Don't forget you had two DLs out and two OLBers out. I would think 2 out of the 4 are considered difference makers.........
