Preseason Week 1 Steelers at Eagles

It's the first game. Tackling is always rough but the steelers had a bunch of practices either rained out or at least rained enough that they didn't do contact and risk guys on a wet field. I'm not that upset with the tackling.

Ridley is looking real good. He could win the #2 job if Conner's blocking doesn't improve.

Eli Rogers is banged up. Patterson has a shot and landing a job. It feels like watching Rogers as a rookie.

Saquan Barkley rips off a 39 yard run for his first NFL carry.

Derius Guice had to be carted off for the skins. Possible major knee injury.

Mayfield looked decent in the few plays i've seen flipping back and forth. But they do have him in vs the scrubs so he should look good.

Weaknesses: LBs both inside and outside until proven otherwise. Safety position still a lot of question marks.

Eagles punter just kicked it at the 5 and it landed on the steelers 18 yard line. That's nearly 80 yards in the air, no bounce and roll. That's probably the best punt i've ever seen.

Kordell Stewart had an 80 yard punt so there is that, maybe you never saw it.??

Salute the nation

Both our starting outside LBs were out this game so hopefully that improves once they're back in.

It'll be better than what we saw tonight obviously but I don't see Watt or Bud giving us more than 6-7 sacks on the season. Watt still has some time for growth, Bud just isn't very good.

Patterson is legit. He's a mini AB. Great route running, excellent hands, and can make highlight catches look routine. Just check out his TD. Tucker is in real trouble of making this roster now.

Sensabaugh looks great this season. He's got an inside track for the #5/6 CB position. Sutton with a nice pick, dude is a playmaker. The only thing holding him back last year was his injury in the preseason.

Mason being Mason. Outplayed Dobbs tonight in the 3 hole. Look for him to be with the 2s next game and Dobbs with the 3s. Dobbs will get shelled with that 3rd string line...

Test him! Boy is probably sticking syringes in his glute to give the ball the boot.

Seriously though

That's impressive

Bro, lets be real- Mason did not outplay Dobbs. He looked incredibly shaky in the pocket (2 fumbles, <60% completion) and his intermediate/long balls had 0 zip. He has to show more, b/c I definitely did not see 'heir apparent'.

Dobbs looked hectic in the beginning, but he showed a ton of mettle, scrambling ability, and zip on the ball. Not to mention, that last drive and TD throw was perfect. He is showing to be a high ceiling/Low floor type of player which is exactly what you want in your prospective QB sitting on the bench.

Landry was solid. And while it may be frustrating for most Steeler fans, Landry may be as stable as it comes when it comes to backup QB's.

I disagree with pretty much your entire post.

Dobbs had 3-4 good throws including the touchdown. That was an solid pass.

Landry looked like typical Landry. Without such a great play by JuJu going up and grabbing that duck he would've had no yards. He is definitely a career back up and we could probably manage to be 8-8 with him.

Mason looked like a rookie in his first game. He also played with a line of people who will be out of the NFL in a couple weeks. He had no reason to feel comfy in that pocket as he was under pressure the entire third quarter. He will be fine. Time will tell if he's the heir apparent.

- I said Landry played like a solid backup. If your backup can get you to .500 , that is solid. How many franchises would kill for a QB that could get them to 8-8 (ahem, Browns).

- Dobbs had some great throws and some questionable ones. He is showing that he can make plays to win the game. Alternatively, he can certainly lose the game for you as well (Ben shared this quality early in his career also). But from what I saw, his best is clearly better than what Landry can offer. Just depends how consistently you can get his 'best' game.

-Mason? Not an awful game, but certainly not spectacular. And although he played a full half, I couldnt hardly glean his ability to take the game over. I get your argument that he was playing behind a O-Line of future 'security guards', but he was also throwing against future 'personal trainers', so that really isn't an excuse. My fear is that his game reminds me a lot like Landry's. In fact, didnt they both play in the Big 12?!?

Not much to say about Rudolph or Dobbs, but there is absolutely no way Rudolph is being exposed to waivers so it is pretty irrelevant. Its clear Jones is their three week guy. So its keep four or hope Dobbs clears waivers. With the lack of depth at Tackle and the plethora of talented DB's they are not keeping 4 QB's. But also realistically will someone pick up Dobbs for their 53 man? Usually most teams have their two entrenched for sure and they have better film on their 3rd and he knows their system. I'd say 50/50 he clears. Patterson needs two more performances like that and he makes the squad. AB, Juju, Washington, Patterson, (DHB/ Hunter/ Rogers? Doesn't matter?) Bostic and Dirty Red were a little hit and miss. Bostic Wiffed badly on Ajayi when the Eagles were backed up. But also knifed in a couple times for tackles at the line or behind. Dirty Red was the same.
I think the third running back is an interesting competition. I'm thinking they keep 4 with the new kid Samuels playing mutli spots. So its Juice, Conner, Samuels and Ridley or Tousaint.

A couple more observations.
1. The oline was pretty shaky against Philly's first team.
2. Why the **** is Michael Bennett playing football much less having Mayock polish his knob. Lost a lot of respect for Mayock. Wasn't Bennett indicted for asaulting an elderly woman at the SB. I don't know what level of assault it was but if he even put his hands on her he is a total POS. I want a protest for that. We all kneel during Eagles player intros.

“Mini” AB? How much smaller can they get? lol. Patterson looks promising and I like his ability to adjust. Quick little ****** too.

I dunno I think the O-line did him no favors. And the WRs were hot and cold. Don't be shocked when he has a chance in preseason to get out there earlier, than his play improves quickly.

Weaknesses: LBs both inside and outside until proven otherwise.

I'm uncomfortable with Matatevich playing ILB in this defense. He's simply too slow afoot to provide what we need. He whiffed badly on a RB that shook him out of his shoes in the backfield. I like Matatevich, solid dude, great ST, but he's not athletic enough imo to start in this league. So I guess it's VWill and Bostic inside, but both of those guys have similar traits, one should be backing up the other. I wonder if Butler will start experimenting with Edmunds/Morgan or maybe Allen as an ILB to pair with VWill. We need speed and athleticism there if they want to have any type of success on D.
