Live Le’Veon Bell News

If a team is going to pay what he wants, it's going to be a suckass team, i.e. Indy, NYJ, Detroit, Wash or Clev. with a ton of cap space. No contender will pay him $16M+. Is the money left on the table that significant not to "retire a Steeler" and play the next handful of seasons with a scrub team? He would have gotten close to his asking price and still have a chance to win a championship or two with the current team. It is about perspective and I think his agent screwed him. His legacy could have been cemented at 4pm yesterday, but he is now going to go down as a money-grubbing really good running back that chased the coin more than championships. I don't begrudge him getting paid, but the Steelers, out of character for them, were going to pay him and well. Good luck, Lev, I'll root for you as long as you are in B&G, but it will be hard to.

That's just it. Bells claims he deserves what he is asking because he serves as both an outstanding running back and a prolific pass catcher...

What part of his pass catching is prolific????? I get what you are saying but BELL definately over-valued himself. The STEELERS were very smart to make what they generously did and then hold position. Bell was very ignorant in my opinion to turn down such an offer. He is playing the "ODDS" for just to long for the inevitable to happen.

That was the best deal he would have gotten as a Steeler. He should get more on the open market, but to resign a commodity on your team, you have to accept a slight discount. Steelers did nothing but keep moving toward Bell's number, and Bell baulked.

Bell lied. He does not want to be a Steeler for life. If he did, he would have taken the deal. Instead he will leave the team at the end of the season.

ALSO what are the odds of another INJURY FREE season on such a workhorse???

Bell wanted $17 milion per AND he wanted it all guaranteed. Dude is beyond dilusional. He WON'T get that next year from anyone. No one is stupid enough to offer a RB, at his age, a fully guaranteed contract. We offered $30 million guaranteed and a payout of $45 million over the first three years of the deal. I have no qualms whatsoever with how the Steelers handled this and what they offered him. Actually, I wouldn't have offered as much as they did. But, they made every effort to try and keep him a Steeler for life and he said **** YOU once again. So, as a fan, I say good riddance, get the **** out and **** YOU!

Good post Cope. Colbert negotiated in good faith, even to the point beyond sensible. Now my concern is during this season will the negativity he receives from the fan base impact his attitude and/or his performance. He needs a monster year for a big payday.

Agree 100%...should have made it clear it is from his point of view that he is prolific pass catcher. He believes he is playing 2 positions and is to be paid accordingly. What a crock.

Steelers really only offered him a 2 or 3 year contract depending on the details and if only 30 mil was guaranteed,
he already has 14.5 mil guaranteed this season, so that's only another 15.5 mil guaranteed. I think it's too
much to pay for him, but I can see how he could turn it down.

Exactly. Catching a 5 yard shovel pass isn’t prolific. Hell how many easy passes did he drop or they bounced off his hands killing a good drive.

He better hope he doesn’t get hurt or in trouble because his asking price will be much much lower

You know the old saying: "Pigs get fed, Hogs get bled".

I wonder what his teammates think about his decision. Not what they'll say to the media, because that's just bullshit. What they REALLY think. He really wants to be here and retire a Steeler? Right.

I am sure he will have an insurance policy but if he does get injured this year or suspended, his value in the league will drop to maybe $10 million per, if he is lucky.

I thin k it drops a little more than that,...............near 7.5-8mil. Suspension = layoff mandatorily, INJURY= pending on type / seriousness. BOTH those scenerioI's are a very distinct possibility with the suspension being the lesser possibility.

Apparently the Steelers only offered 10M guaranteed. If true then we might understand why he rejected the offer

HA! That's bullshit. That's not the way contracts work. He's signing a multiyear contract, the signing bonus alone will be close to $20-25M Signing bonuses are guaranteed money. As long as you don't leave the team to find yourself, like Rickey Williams.

To accept this premise, you have to agree that his signing bonus would be $10M, and no 5yr 70M contract ever had that low of a signing bonus. It's simply impossible to believe, and you have to not have an understanding of contracts, to fabricate this farce.

According to this report, that was the bonus:

Mentioned yesterday the #Steelers final offer to RB Le’Veon Bell was 5 years, $70M. More context today: The fully guaranteed part was his signing bonus of just over $10M. He would’ve made $33M over the 1st two years — in a rolling guaranteed structure. $45M over the 1st 3 years.

It is pretty safe to assume that Bell would see at least four of the five years of that deal unless he let himself go like LaMarr Woodley.

Except if he would get suspended for something. Looks like the Steelers were giving themselves a bit of protection.

Rumor has it that he once held a door open for one of the equipment managers and he once handed an o-lineman some water and now he wants to be paid like a RB/WR/Doorman/Waterboy.

At least 26 million a season now. 30 million if you want to be fair. All guaranteed IF they win the next 3 superbowls in a row. Just the vet minimum if they don't. See guaranteed stuff goes both ways.

Honestly all of this **** just makes me hate what pro sports has become.

The thing that gets me about the whole Bell fiasco is he played like he wanted to re-sign with the Steelers. Bottom line is he wanted to get his top dollar amount from the get go...and, to be honest. I'm ok with that. Just say that from the start. Last year he should have said that he wanted the most $$$ he could get and will just wait to get to FA. Hell. The Steelers might have gone a different direction altogether if they knew 100% that they were not going to be able to sign him unless they caved to his asking price. In the end he will have made some nice money from the Steelers and his new team next season will pay a nice chunk of money to him also. And as far as todays sports in general. Yes the athletes are trying to get their money. And have more leverage now than in the past. In the past the owners just filled their own wallets.

And the owners really could go back to filling their own wallets when the cba ends. All they have to say is this is what we are going to pay. Take the job or leave it. These are the rules take it or leave it. 10,000 other men will step up in a flash to earn that kind of coin even if it was lower now. What other place will you go to outside of the NFL to make that money? It doesn't exist. I'd personally like to see the whole thing go down a few notches and be way more affordable to the consumer. The product itself has turn to glorified two hand touch football with a billion cheap passing yards and suspect validity of the entire product. The game I loved watching is pretty much dead,so is the value in personal investment into a bunch of spoiled dudes who play a meaningless game for a living and still ***** about money. Try being a brain or heart surgeon.
