Burns vs. Sutton. What are the chances they battle for the starting job?

If you know what you looking for

First of all Coach even the coaches with better resume's for picking players, don't eval with youtube highlights.

They want to see that player in different situations and circumstances against different levels of competition.

Not just a small minuscule highlight reel.

They couldn't get what they are looking for watching that any more than you can Coach.

The idea you can properly scout a player by watching a highlight reel is laughable.

Ike ran reportedly a 4.24 40. Tom Shaw, who trained Ike, said he is the fastest player he has ever trained. He had also trained Dion Sanders and Chris Johnson. There is no comparison between Allen's speed and Ike's.

Shame he won't be coaching Steelers players anymore.

0%, they play separate positions. One is an outside corner and the other an inside

Not set in stone what they will do with Sut yet.

. Davis played SS last year, and yet here we are with him being looked at a FS.

I see Burns locked in, but a soso training camp could easily change that way of thinking.

The funny part is when a positional coach is asked about a player, they hardly mentioned the film they have seen on him. The reply you get back is on the light side, for the most part.

You might be surprised to learn that many positional coaches have not watched much film on some of the newly drafted people until then became Steelers!

I use a combination of watching games, stats with an eye toward doing well vs. quality competition, video on the web, and the college all-star games/practices plus the offseason combine and pro days to formulate my opinion.

I don't have access to*the NFL wonderlic IQ scores, character reports, or injury reports for the most part.

I would have taken the trade down offer and picked Howard ( CB on Dolphins ) and Simmons ( Denver safety ) over Burns. We'll see how that pans out over the course of time.

For the record I did an extensive break down on Burns with all of his targets for the year on film to look at, and he turned out close to what I evaluated. Good man to man just all right in zone I liked the Sutton pick in round three for value. I did the same break down for Davis, and I think he might be a back up type soon as our first pick and prize free agent were both safties.

I thought Dupree was a mediocre first round pick. I thought Watt was a good first round pick. Not a bad track record. Agreed?

Want more? Okay.

Busts I called were Hood, Jones, Sweed, Dir Archer, and Golson. I wasn't wrong nor were many here on the same players, despite what you might call lack of film.

I do think Colbert does a good job overall.

Allen is a SLUG for a DB ( 4.63 pro day ) , and one with very few plays on the ball despite playing 4 years at Penn State. Double red flag. A possible special teams guy, but as a safety he's going to be meat in coverage. I kept a close eye on all seniors safeties at senior bowl week. Allen was perhaps burned the worse of the entire lot. I wish I had easy access to video to share here as these practices showed a lot.

What has Burns done except given up big plays and standing over a receiver when the receiver drops the ball. His tackling is terrible. Burns has done nothing and this is his third year. Anyone could can battle Burns for starting.

Trey Johnson will beat out both Burns and Sutton. He’s Coach’s can’t miss player on the team. He will be All-Pro by week 8. He had 29 passes defended in 40+ games in college...so he’s HOF worthy!!!

"blah blah blah coach, blah blah blah coach"

coach must have an awesome pad living up there in your dome, ike. pretty much every time you post, it's to snipe at coach.

Coach I'm sure your echo chamber is super fun for you, but many of us are tired of getting a look inside. Still waiting for Anthony Chickillo to become a pro bowler

Putting words in my mouth that I never said won't help. Chickillo a pro bowler? I said I think he's better than Jarvis Jones and wondered why Tomlin didn't give him some of his pass rushing attempts. Hindsight shows us I was correct. Chickillo is the better player, but he's just a good back up type who can start for a few games if needed. Not much beyond that. Until then if someone calls me out on a prediction, I can list many that I was correct on.

I'm sure you would love to do that, you are certainly a fan of heaping praise on yourself.

Coach: Makes 10,000 predictions, 3 come true, twists 10 other predictions to make it seem like he was right, pats himself on the back....... repeatedly

Nope Omar. He’s just a pimple on this board. Sometimes they need burst to clear out the bacteria from infecting everyone else. See above post from Ian.

I dont get the coach bashing. Seems like we should safe the bashing for some of the trolls that usually appear.

A coach wouldn’t comment on record about a player not on the club. That is why you receive “a reply that is on the light side”. Additionally, only head coaches calls out players on the team on the record. Position coaches do not. To do so would undermine their process of “coaching up”.

Surprised many coaches do not watch film on drafted players? More BS for your legacy. Show us the link you got that from. You are out of your frigging mind to think that. Considering position coaches after the season are knee deep in reviewing the college scouts data for the several hundred players that are identified. That includes coach 22 cut ups, and every play they participated in while in college. Not to mention the numerous college pro days they may be assigned to if a player(s) they are really wanting to see in person is performing. All the while squeezing in the combine (which Colbert has said the physical aspects are not as important as the medical and personal interviews, since they have year(s) worth of game tape from the scouts.

Ask any professional position coach how much time they put in after the season (I have, several times). They will tell you after a couple weeks after the season ends, there are long hours evaluating players in preparation for the draft. Most coaches don’t take their month long vacations until after the last minicamp in May/June and have a month of downtime until training camp in late July.

You have regurgitated how you form your opinions ad nauseam. They are no more accurate than anyone else who doesn’t put quality time in player evaluations. Which is 90% of the board. To those that do, tip o’ the hat.

Hilton could be the guy who is most certain to start. He's very good in the slot and was good with blitzes. Hilton could be the reason that Burns or Sutton is on the bench.

This is put up or shut up for Burns and Davis. This is the first year in a long time where there will be real competition for starting jobs. I think part of the struggles have been because jobs have been handed to guys due to lack of depth.

Burns and Sutton are likely in direct competition.

Safety will be interesting. Seems very unlikely that Edmunds or Allen could beat out Burnett or Davis to start. Safety has too little margin for error and even if the rookies flash some great plays, they will almost certainly go with the more experienced guys. Polamalu didn't even start as a rookie. This scheme is less complicated, but still, a mistake at safety usually means 6 points. We've seen that too many times the last few years.

I think Marcus Allen has a shot to get more snaps than Edmunds this year. Why? Allen pretty much played LB at Penn State and if the steelers put a 3rd safety on the field, i think it will be to play that hybrid LB role. That could be part of why Allen was drafted and since they think Edmunds is their future, they may not want him learning a position he won't ultimately play. That may have hurt Davis's development.

Hilton is great where he is. No way the coaches would move him. He's too small and slow to flourish on the outside. Let him star in the slot.

Allen getting more snaps than Edmunds??? Not a chance unless a injury hits. Allen is slow with below average ball skills.

No offense Tape, you are a good poster.

I'm still of the opinion that Sutton plays sparingly this year but will unseat Haden next year to go along with Burns on the outside.
Love Haden, but his pricetag is awful high with a guy sitting on the bench that can play the position fairly well in Sutton.

I personally hope Haden doesn't go anywhere. Maybe when his contract is up he takes less money to stay. I can see something like that happening. Well hopefully anyway. You can never have enough quality CB's.

I'd like Haden to say, but for the right price. He's our best outside corner for now. With lots of good corners, the Steelers can afford to play more tight man and focus on the run defense, which was shredded badly in our last six games, plus the playoffs.

I do not understand why the Steelers did not draft any Linebackers or a better DT/NT in the draft. 3 of the first four picks in the draft went for the offense. Instead, the Steelers must think the defense, minus Shazier with Matakevich starting will be just fine. You could argue a healthy Tuitt will make a big difference and be right, but I still see us as soft and slow in the middle vs the run.

Haden is a free agent in 2020. He's not going anywhere. He's tied as the 20th highest paid CB in the league this year, and that is value. Unless he can't play, he will play out this contract and may get another.

oh my ******* gawwd!!

You might say that again when you see Bostic or Matakevich at Inside linebacker, missing tackles, falling to get off blockers, or trying to cover people. And yes, when this happen all we can do as fans is look back and see who we could have signed in free agency or drafted.

season hasn't started yet. FA's will fall . Havent played a game with the two mentioned yet. You never let it go.. you cant help but repeat it to hope that its true. Retard.x

Sutton impressed me as a rookie, with tight coverage.

While Burns is bigger / faster / the better athlete, you could argue Sutton with some improvement from his rookie campaign is the smarter / more aware player and more reliable in most coverage responsibilities.

We have an excellent slot man in Hilton.

If Sutton continues to play smart, he'll slowly get starting reps.
Burns has the tools to excel. Just needs to play smart. So it's really Burns job to lose.
