When I heard he was mentioning that this was perhaps thin at the top. I immediately wondered with the position being one of the two biggest needs. If Colbert could be smoke screening. Or is he simply being honest. I initially pegged the Steelers as bringing in a free agent ILBer and hoping for a S too. My way of thinking hasn't changed, Although S seems more likely to be had in the draft. As some think the Steelers wouldn't bring in two starters in free agency, due to the cost of doing so.

Obviously free agency will put some of this conjecture to rest. But if they see the odds of landing an impactful inside linebacker in the draft as long. They could very well increase their efforts of sorting through the free agents, and targeting a particular one to bring in.

Smokescreen or is Colbert just being truthful ?

I think a little bit of both.

They probably have their eyes on a couple of linebackers they'd love to take in the 1st, so that's the smokescreen part. It also sounds like they have a lot of others ranked lower down in the middle-late rounds, that's the truthful part. It's not out of the question they get a guy they want early, if that someone drops in their laps. I also think they'll be unusually agressive looking at FA/trade options this year, to bring in a starter-caliber ILB. One thing for sure, Colbert will be looking to hedge his moves so we'll probably see something on both the FA/trade and the draft front. I think the situation is the same at the safety position, in that we may see some double-dipping there as well.

Agreed. I almost think the are going to pull the trigger on a ILB in free agency fast this year. or at least attempt to

The elephant in the room is BELL. The STEELERS don't know what they have to play with $$$$$$$$ until his deal gets done, one way or the other. I hear everything you are saying and fully agree on the possible smoke screen / FA pick ups. It would be a lot easier to do knowing how much we had to spend.........................

Salute the nation

Bell is the elephant in the room.
If we can't get him inked to a long-term deal, I say let him walk. 15 mil on the FT cripples your teams ability to get better
anywhere else.

He's not far off on what he said but I'd still look and Vander Esch and Evans as borderline Rd 1 talents. But, if they don't take one of those guys then and they wait, neither will be there in the 2nd. I am not sure Jewell will be there in the 2nd and he's probably the next best ILB.

Please, once Shazier went down, so did the pass defense and run defense. We ended up picking out of work players like Spence who was awful, and without Shazier, Williams was more exposed.

No smoke screens around our needs, Colbert can try, but he's not fooling anyone.. ILB and S are primary, as well as what to do with Bell.

Colbert hardly trades down in round one, though he should have taken the extra third, but picked Burns instead. Sometimes Colbert trades up . That is the history.

Our needs are right up the middle. Very easy to assess. We need one or two ILB's. We need a new S to replace Mitchell. And, we should be employing a true 3 down NT - I don't care what the pundits say.

I'm with you on a better 3 down NT.

Settle or Harrison would be great picks in round two.
