Mike Mitchell

since we started playing Man you can see Davis with a lot of 1 on 1 assignments, he isn't getting torched, that speaks of him not being a liability in coverage

I wish I could see it Litos, I really do, but he does not make any plays, and his tackles, if he's lucky enough to make one, are already after a first down is earned. He stopped meeting receivers when the ball gets there, and since he's done that, he is useless to me on D.

I don't know if he was playing deeper because of the CF we had at CB until Haden returned, but he was vacant last week, fortunately the CBs were covering the WRs, so he didn't have to get exposed, yet again...

And i want no part of Mitchell next season. If I'm the GM, I'm looking to dump his salary and upgrade in FA and then in the draft. That $5M can be better used on impact players IMHO.

I would be more willing to offer Troy a one year contract, than Mitchell. Troys speed may be gone, but his mind was all right. Mitchell’s skills are gone and he hakes stupid mistakes on a regular basis too

Agreed. Mitchell needs to find a new team in 2018.

Davis was severely burned in the end zone, but the Texas 3rd string Qb overthrew an easy score.

IMO, BOTH of our safeties are weak links.

you bash Davis in a Mike Mitchell thread..... I swear at the end of the season as Davis is hoisting the Lombardi you are going to ***** that he is getting fingerprints on it.

Hahahahaha

Steelers have 15 interceptions this season. 11 different players this year, have interceptions.

None of them are Mike Mitchell...

They did and still do.

maybe I'm wrong but I thought we had something like 4-5M of cap space, Weddle has an avg salary of 6,5M and this season his cap hit is 5,75M including bonuses. So I don't know how we could have fitted his massive contract with the rest of the team.

Again, I might be wrong so let's debate this in a friendly way, enough of the animosity that Harrison's self forced leave caused around the Steelers fandom

It's not a right or wrong thing. Steelers had a ton of Cap room. We were pursuing Weddle, and at the time didn't have Haden's salary counting against us. If we got Weddle, we would have had to dump Mitchell's salary. So the number would have been closer to $10M (not yet accounting for Haden's $3M and adding Mtichell's $2M) before Haden fell in our laps. Of that $10M, Weddle would have counted about $6M against it. Steelers also didn't restructure anyone this year (since they had the cap space). This could have been done if we were in the situation where we signed Weddle, then Haden was available. If they needed to, Ben would have restructured immediately. Pouncey, Gilbert, and Foster would also be options to restructure and create plenty of room. So with the $4M without restructures, Haden still would have fit in our Salary Cap this season (because the Browns still paid $4M in guarantees this year).

This is the best year I've ever seen the Steelers have for cap room. They are always right up against the cap or under $2M. This past year we had $25M and used it to resign Tuitt, Villa, AB, pay for Bell's Franchise tag and still had $6M left. We're down to $5M and have about $1M in dead money, but that will roll over next year creating an extra $4M in cap space for next season.

all right yes, with some tweaking of course it could have been done. Still I see it as too much money for an aging Safety, probably next year Weddle will be on the downtrend and with a dead cap hit of 3,5M.

I think the Steelers FO is aware of the situation and will be looking for a replacement either in FA (probably as experience matters a lot in this position) where the team will have enough space to get a good player or draft (QB,ILB, TE are priorities too)

Really the only year that is cost effective to cut Mitchell is next year. $8.1M cap hit. If cut, $3.1M in dead money, but opens $5M in cap space. $5M is enough to sign a top FA Safety. This is what I'm doing next year, since Mitchell was invisible this year.

I misreported our Dead money at $1M that is 2018 dead money, this year we're at $11.7 in dead money. The cap amount of $5.3M should carry over in full, unless we sign someone over the playoffs. Still should have $5M even if injuries occur.

exactly, that's the other point, we had to keep MM for one more sason due to cap cost. Next year he's definitely gone

Also I don't personally count TE as a need. If Vance is healthy, he is a 2 way starter. We have Vance locked up until 2021. His contract is very team friendly as none of his remaining money is guaranteed, and can be cut at anytime for no penalty.

I agree, though this past year, if we got Weddle, I fully believe the team would have cut Mitchell. But you're right, the contract makes the most sense to get out of it in its last year.

yeap I do hope he stays healthy, he'd be a very decent starting TE in both O phases but until he is available through a string of games I don't know if I can feel comfortable with just him and Jesse James

I agree on this because we also have a serviceable TE in Jesse. So far obviously Vance is the better of two but we have also witnessed Jesse as the main TE and even though there is drop off it is bearable drop off. Keeps us CAP friendly and allows for another skilled player. Don't get me wrong as I'd love to see a high caliber TE but if you look at other teams.........it's hard to have every position high caliber. WE HAVE OUR FAIR SHARE OF HIGH CALIBER PLAYERS obviously we continue to improve if possible.

I'd cut his *** to free up $5 in cap space. Addition by subtraction.

Vance is actually that guy. He is like a more explosive Heath Miller. He's a road grader in the running game, and is more explosive in the passing game. His only downside, his health and hands. I just don't trust his hands yet. He's got a track record of being a drop artist. Heath was the most reliable pass catcher the Steelers ever had at TE.

Yes SIr, both good points and my concern also. The health is the biggest to this point. It doesn't matter how good you are if you're not on the field. Bell SUSPENTION & injuries, Martavious suspension are great examples and currently Antonio Brown...... Not on the field you're not contributing. Vance may have dropsies but hasn't displayed that characteristic so much, Yet. I hope he don't suddenly start either. Vance is definately and upgrade over Jesse but I still give Jesse his "hurrah". Keep both, save cap space, we good !!!!!

I get the notion Vance is more explosive than Miller was I get that. Damn good blocker too.

But Heath was clearly the better route runner. And as a result was more productive. I know injuries play a major factor.

But in comparison yinz can't help us from the hot tub anyways.

If he can stay on the field in the playoffs, he definitely brings the X factor...that little something extra to defend.

And he helps the running game more than any other TE on our roster........
