Is the NFL unwatchable these days?

Bring back the Halas and Lamar Hunt trophies. This new tradition nonsense of goodell (color rush, Europe games, Mexico games, moving the draft, etc.) is stupid.

Totally understand. But to be fair, I'm talking only about how watchable and exciting the games are. I know as people get married, have kids, get jobs, etc. they have less time for football. But that's a problem for the NFL every year since it's inception. In every industry that relies on people having some free time, they will lapse some customers due to growing out of the hobby, more life responsibilities, etc.

I'm talking about for those of us who are willing and able to watch. According to those articles, folks are tuning in then tuning out. It's people who want to watch the games, they're just bored of it once it starts. The talk has been quiet for the past few years but really starting to get louder and louder. I think it's becoming a legitimate problem for the NFL. Yes there are other factors (cord cutting, more entertainment options, some just growing up like this poster, boycotts for various political reasons, etc.) but a real, serious problem is that people who CAN and WANT to watch NFL football are just flat not entertained anymore by the games. College football does not have this problem. Refs aren't as flag happy, there are variations in offensive styles, QBs aren't just taking the safe routes every time, etc. Many reasons. It's super interesting to me and I think the NFL needs to immediately find ways to get the actual game play closer to the way it used to be. You can still get head shots out of the game while not flagging DB's for every minor tug and push. Let DB's play, give QB's incentive to throw the ball down the field, etc.

Post of the month !!!!!!!!

Finally allow DBs to actually cover the receiver. Forget that 5 yard bs

I liked your whole post,, except this. I think its fair to do the 5 yard thing,, then after that.. defender cant grab on to you or impede your catching the ball. that's it.. Hand check is ok with me ,, but a grab is not.

I agree with a lot of this. But go a little deeper. I also feel less compelled to watch anymore. I love the steelers.. I don't like a lot of how the team is run, but it may be more than this. Click click boom.. click click boom. Unplug your internet ,, Go with a "dumb phone" instead.. Unplug, tune out, and watch your levels rise .It's all the reasons mentioned. Don't get me wrong. But its also,, ,,,,,, **** it,, I can just click here and get the score,, I can just click here and get the highlight,,, Alexa whats the score of the steelers Vikings game? etc.. etc..

It's hard for me to comment because I'm still waiting to have my first Steelers game this year on TV.

So far in the Philadelphia market, they've been up against the Eagles TWICE and that means either no competition against them on the opposite network (week 1) or lose out when on the same network/time (week 2).

I've had to follow both games on the radio/internet.

And if you have DVR, just tape the games and start watching 1 hour late. You can skip all the breaks and the game will likely end at the exact same time for you. That's the only way to watch football now.

I've been doing this for a decade, people still watch LIVE tee-vee?

hahahahahah, well there's your problem

I definitely like the idea, in theory, of skipping thru ads. But if I'm watching a game, I like it to be live. I know myself. If I'm watching a game, it means my attention probably isn't occupied by too many very important things at the moment. Which means I'll probably be checking the scores and refreshing the twitter timeline anyway. There's no point for me in being on a delay because my curiosity will get the best of me. I just won't have the patience. So, for me, I'm firing up that **** live and just dealing with the ads

I heard an X NFL coach on the radio say by limiting the practices in pads to 16 times a year ( once a week, usually on Wednesday ), teams are having trouble learning how to block and tackle.

This makes some sense, but the biggest problem is bad QB play, fantasy people upset that teams are not scoring enough, and too much emphasis on player suspension and CTE by the media.

Yes, I think the media and special interest groups are making some fans feel that watching NFL football is a guilty pleasure. If a player is taking a knee during the national anthem, DO NOT show him on camera.

It does not help that the Union boss is a dolt, threatening to strike and ratings are down. *

******* genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why the hell didn't you tell us about this 10years ago??? AWESOMEness

Michael Bennet and a few others are asking for November to be a month of activism in the NFL. That should really help ratings.

When Do I get my month????????????????????????? WTF

Brian Hoyer at QB for the 49ers - bad enough

First play of the game - Hoyer throws easy little 5 yard out - bad enough

...... 5 yard out thrown directly into the hands of a defender

His second throw of the game - 3rd and 10

6 yard dump off surrounded by 3 defenders, not even an attempt to get the first down

God this is bad

Color rush uniforms..........those are enough to cause a decrease in rating. Those things are hideous.

New rules, weird jerseys, cheating is tolerable, The ***** "Brady" rule. Players disrespecting our flag that represents the people. Players getring brought up on criminal charges. Brady is still in the league. Deflate gate is fine. Nope I'm cool with this **** league.

Let me add another. ESPN

let's face it, ESPN is the major voice in sports. Over the last 5 years, they have changed their tone on football. Now they focus more on off-field issues. They focus on injuries. They focus on negatives. It's almost as if they are saying you are a horrible person for watching football.

it's well known people are turning off ESPN in droves. This has an impact because now people don't look forward to the games as much as back when they had ESPN on in the background all week hyping up the weekend's games.
ESPN is in trouble. Cut over 450 jobs in Manhattan N.Y. main office. NFL , MLB , NBA channels are killing them. I can't remember watching ESPN. But I do remember waiting 20-30 minutes for scores. Not anymore.
