4pm deadline looms

Steelers' Le'Veon Bell: My value extends past ground game
play

11:33 PM ET
Jeremy Fowler
ESPN Staff Writer
PITTSBURGH -- Le'Veon Bell wants to reset the running back market, without the running back label.

Bell believes his worth comes from receiving and rushing, which helps explain why he's playing under the Pittsburgh Steelers' $12.12 million franchise tag in 2017 instead of a long-term deal.

"I feel I should be valued as a player, not so much my position," Bell told ESPN in an interview Monday, shortly after the 4 p.m. ET franchise-tag deadline passed.

"Hopefully down the line I can get valued at, not as much a guy who gets the ball 30 carries and that's it," he said.

Bell expounded on that belief, which echoes what former Steeler Ike Taylor said this week on NFL Network after also speaking with Bell -- he's the Steelers' No. 2 receiver behind Antonio Brown, along with his status as a premier running back.

Le'Veon Bell has said that he's fine playing under the franchise tag as he and the Steelers couldn't get a long-term deal done by Monday's deadline.
In 2016, Bell was second on the team in catches (75) and receiving yards (616) despite sitting four games (three due to suspension and one for rest) and mostly running the ball late in the season.

Anyone who has seen Bell's receiving up close knows he could be an elite slot receiver full time. He makes contested catches, has soft hands and contorts his body with the best of them. But he plays a position whose highest-paid player on a long-term deal is Buffalo's LeSean McCoy at $8 million per year.

"I make plays in the passing game, blocking, doing everything," Bell said. "I'm arguably the top running back in the NFL and the No. 2 receiver on the Steelers, even though I play running back. Their career receiving total vs. mine, they don't have more yards than me."

Bell's 2,005 receiving yards in four seasons rank second on the team during that span.

That's why Taylor said he thought $15 million per year would have gotten a deal done -- the $12.1 million tag, plus $3 million more for receiving skills.

To be sure, it's highly unlikely any running back will get that $15 million, which is considered top dollar for high-end receivers. Despite his elite pass-catching skills, he's still a running back first.

But Bell made clear he's prepared to be patient to get the right contract in 2018.

Bell played out the duration of his four-year, $4.12 million rookie deal, though he lost a small fraction of that total because of suspensions. Bell used some of that money to purchase a home for his mother, Lisa, near Columbus, Ohio.

Passing on a long-term offer from the Steelers wasn't easy.

"More money than you've ever seen in your life, it's hard to walk away from it," Bell said. "At the same time, I've never had that amount of money for 25 years."

Though Bell hasn't committed to reporting to training camp on time -- he hasn't signed the franchise tender yet, which means he can report when he wants -- he plans to play a full 16-game season.

If Bell has his way, he will have increased his worth by then.

"I understand from [the Steelers'] side it's not personal against me; it's all business," Bell said. "It's not personal with them, either. I'm trying to do what's best for me and my family.

"I like the position I'm at right now. I'm going to play football."

Bell is getting a little out there on his self righteous worth. The RB market's highest paid is 8mill. The 12+mil offer was for his combined services but NOT enough in his eyes. Does he not realize that we didn't have a #2 WR last year thus pushing up his receiving. This year with a legitamite #2 his receiving numbers will be down. You ONLY have so many touches and #2 will take some of them. I understand get the money now but there is a fine line of value vs greed. Do I have the answer,.....NO but I also don't own a NFL franchise either........

PS. RB are paid for their services combined and NOT for break down of their services. Did AB get paid for is receiving skills and then add more for his PR skills????? You get the point

if this has been posted already please excuse

he shed light to Ike saying he wanted to be paid like a number 1RB and a number. 2WR

reminds me of the Graham TE situation he wanted to be paid like a WR too. Except Bell isn't fading.

I think next years offer will be more provided the production is there. But I very well could see another tag. Hopefully not though. As I think if you think you have to tag him, then I think about trading him as we know that will be the last year he can be tagged. You want something for a player this valuable if you have to let him go.

I would Kirk Cousins his *** if he wants to play this game. We are better off at 12 million this year because if he gets suspended we don't pay him that 750k per suspended game. This gives the Steelers a season to see how Conner develops as well. If he looks like the second coming we can let Bell leave and get likely a 2nd or 3rd round comp pick in return.

IMO, this 3-year deal is probably the FO shedding light on Ben's expiration date and the FO attempting to prepare.

though it would be a lot easier for a rookie QB to rely on a vet RB like Bell than it would be to have a rook QB and RB.
Maybe Dobbs/Connor are our future?

The problem with Bell is he can't stay healthy. Look at our last 3 end runs to the Super bowl. 2016 New England where is Bell? HURT. 2015 Broncos where is Bell? HURT. 2014 Ravens where is Bell? HURT.

When on the field he is elite. When he's on the GD field.

Le'Veon not planning regular-season holdout

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Le'Veon Bell "plans to play a full 16-game season"

Meaning he does not plan to holdout into the regular season. According to NFL Network's Ike Taylor, there is a "strong possibility" he will skip at least part of training camp, something he is able to do without fine because he has yet to sign his franchise tender.

On the contract front, Bell said he turned down an offer for reportedly "over" $12 million per year because he wants to be paid like a running back and a No. 2 receiver, a number Taylor thinks is around $15 million. That is probably not going to happen anytime soon considering the Steelers can franchise him again next year for around $14.5 million, but Bell should completely reshape the running back market when he signs a long-term deal.

Ding Ding. 2 year 26.5 million and that gives us two years to replace him via the draft.

I'd make sure Conner gets some reps this year in the games. 5-10 touches a game so we know what we have come next year and the year after.

'I want Conner to looks so good in camp we can just let Bell go next year. I want heart and character as much as I want skill. Conner seems to be a true Steeler player rather than a diva. I have a hard time respecting Bell after turning down this offer and his rap and the pictures of ridiculous bling he posted on facebook. I want him to shut and play ball.

I tend to agree. The Steelers made Bell a very good offer - much more than I thought they would. Most analysts, etc. seem to agree that Bell made a mistake here. Time will tell.

If he comes anywhere close to the expectations laid out for him, I'll perdict a resurgence of the split-I or pro-set sometime at or before mid-season.

I'm not sure how Conner's hands are but that's just too tempting a combo not to throw it out there to muddy up the waters just before the playoffs.

That's assuming a lot I know but that's why they call me a fan.

Honestly I dont know why those formations wouldnt work and if you want to bring in your bigs to stop it, ben pumps his foot on the ground once and Bell flexes out to the slot and with James you have four capable receivers against the bigs. If they stay small you run x dives from proset and split dives from broken I.

I believe Conner has pretty good hands. He is not going to line up as a WR but he can catch out of the backfield.

I'm fine with Bell forgoing all of camp. I don't want starters to play AT ALL in the preseason. I'm sick of losing talent because of it. Tomlin did it right last year, as his O starters only played about 2 total quarters of the 16 preseason quarters. I think that number should be 1 QTR max. Keep them fresh and healthy for the games that count!

As for the Franchise Tag amount for RBs, I thought the Tag was supposed to be an average of the top 5 RB salaries. If McCoy is the highest earner at $8M, how is the Franchise number $4M over that???

How much should Le'Veon Bell earn?

Srinivasan: Bell hasn't signed his franchise tender and, as a result, he doesn't have to report to training camp. Under terms of the tender, Bell will be paid $12.1 million for the upcoming season, which makes him the highest-paid NFL running back by far. That amount ought to be enough for Bell, who feels otherwise. Bell is a superstar talent and is being paid handsomely for his efforts. It seems absurd he's not happy about his $12.1-million salary but it's the exact amount he deserves.

McClymont: By accepting the franchise tag, Bell has already accomplished his stated goal of resetting the market for running backs. LeSean McCoy had been the highest earner at the position, making an average of $8 million. Realistically, Bell is among the best overall players in the league. Julio Jones makes an average of $14 million and J.J. Watt makes $16.6 million on average. Bell should slot in right between them.

Sanderson: The NFL is stuck in this archaic way of thinking where players are only compared to other players at their positions. Given Bell's unreal versatility and mission to change how running backs use patience, he should be valued at his overall value rather than comparing him to other rushers, especially when the running back market is so low. Brock Osweiler and Sam Bradford each make $18 million a year and are definitely less effective than Bell. He's never going to make that much, but if we're in an ideal world, Bell should make at least $18 million.

Kordell Stewart believed he was worth more and was a multi-positional player too.

It worked out badly.

For his talent, I don't think $14m is out of the question and, I think, only one of his injuries (last year) could be directly related to durability issues. As I stated earlier, I think the guaranteed money was the issue with his contract. The guarantee would have had to have been, at least north of $27m. The problem is, once that much is guaranteed, he has less incentive to avoid failing a ganja test. Now, if we tag him next year, we are out the same guaranteed money, but he has every incentive to not fail a test and, that, I think is why the Steelers wouldn't give him the guaranteed money he wants.

Kordell believed he was worth more as a QB. If he had stayed in the slash position, we would have another ring, IMO.

Maybe if he didn't have all the baggage he has $14 mill is reasonable but with him being in the substance abuse program (or what ever it is called) and given the amount of injuries I believe the offer the Steelers made was more than fair. I personally think the tag price is high but that was the only other option available to th Steelers next to letting him sign elsewhere.

Ryan Shazier Explains Why AB, Bell Are Among The Best In The Game

The news on Bell over the last week has been less than stellar. The debate over if he should’ve accepted the Steelers’ long-term deal, when he’ll decide to show up for training camp. But we can’t forget how good he is, the best back in the league because who is the most complete. Shazier knows as well as anyone.

“He’s not just a running back, though. He’s a wide receiver and a running back. Le’Veon is going to get his rushing yards, but if you start stacking up the box, he’ll motion out of you and start playing receiver. But he’s not a decoy — he’s killing you out there.”

That’s the same argument Bell is making to reach a mega contract, perhaps up to $15 million per season. Since entering the league in 2013, Bell’s 227 receptions are second most on the Steelers, only trailing Brown. For backs league-wide, he ranks second to Matt Forte’s 250 catches. And for all positions, Bell ranks 12th 38th.

Of course, the most common discussion with Bell last year revolved around his patience and ability. The difference is that Le’Veon has the vision and the patience, but he also has the physical tools to stop-and-start like nobody else in the NFL. Most running backs don’t want to stop their feet and load back up behind the line of scrimmage. But with Le’Veon, he can be almost standing still, then do his jump-cut and slip through a tiny hole at full speed. to wait for holes to open up.

Shazier concludes that Bell is “changing the position” and that you’ll see a lot more in the mold of him over the next decade. Ryan Shazier: great linebacker. Pretty good agent.

The rest of the list includes the best offensive line, tight end, and linebacker he’s watched/faced. There is a Baltimore Raven on this list too so Shazier isn’t going full-homer here. We’ll link it again. Worth your time not only to get his opinion but he delves into some solid X’s and O’s for you football junkies out there.
