With Le’Veon Bell only guaranteed to remain with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one more season, the shouts to “run the wheels off” Bell are getting louder by the minute.

It is easy to understand why after Bell turned down a deal worth more than $12 million per year, according to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. If he didn’t sign Pittsburgh’s offer this year, what makes anyone think he’ll sign a similar offer next year?

Rather than ease the load for Bell, get the most of his $12.12 million franchise tag this year and run him until the wheels fall off as head coach Mike Tomlin famously did to Willie Parker.

While this approach would probably get the Steelers the most value in terms of touches per dollar, it is not a smart approach and one that Tomlin needs to avoid in 2017.

Bell is one of the most well-conditioned, physically imposing running backs in the NFL, but also one who has not proven to be durable. He’s only played all 16 games in the regular season once and finally played in the playoffs for the first time in three opportunities last season.

Although not necessarily injury prone, Bell has suffered through a foot injury, multiple knee injuries, and a groin injury. With an average of over 24 touches per game over the course of his career, the chance of injury is there for each time he handles the ball.

Perhaps this was no more evident than in his suspension shortened 2016 season. After missing the first three games, Bell was a workhorse for Pittsburgh’s offense and averaged 28 touches in 12 regular season games.

By virtue of clinching the division with a Week 16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, Bell got some much-needed rest after averaging over 39 touches over his previous six games.

Bell’s workload didn’t decrease once the playoffs started as he carried the ball 29 times—at one point running the ball 13 of 14 plays—for franchise-record 167 yards in the Wild Card round against the Miami Dolphins. He topped his own record the following week with 170 yards on 30 carries against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After years of waiting, Bell’s presence in the playoffs finally paid off, at least until the AFC Championship game. Following his fifth carry, Bell left the game with a groin injury. Although his absence wasn’t the reason the Steelers lost, it certainly did not help their cause.

Later, we would learn that Bell injured his groin against the Dolphins, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“I continued to play on it,” Bell said after the initial injury vs. the Dolphins. “It wasn’t like it hurt my performance at that time, but I definitely felt it. I went through the week. I wasn’t telling anybody I was hurting, I didn’t want people to get nervous.”

And it didn’t hurt, at least until it counted the most. And people didn’t get nervous, particularly his head coach.

“He was doing a great job of managing it,” said Tomlin, via Teresa Varley of Steelers.com. “It didn’t cause him to miss any practice time, let alone game time. It was something to manage. When you look at the journey that is the season, I think just about every guy down there is dealing with and managing something in an effort to stay on the grass.”

Tomlin continued, “I was aware of it. It wasn’t significant to the point where it affected planning or the anticipation of planning in any way. It’s unfortunate that it became an issue in game.”

That says it all. Tomlin uses a heavy rotation with his defensive lineman and outside linebackers to help preserve their bodies, but it is not an approach he takes with his running backs. Just ask Parker or Rashard Mendenhall. Both backs had seasons with over 300 carries.

The history is there. Tomlin has run the wheels off his running backs one more than one occasion and it is something that he should anticipate and plan for.

Will it be difficult to take off a guy who averaged 157 all-purpose yards per game last season? Absolutely. However, it’s also a move that is necessary to keep Bell on the field when it matters most—the playoffs.

This sounds great in theory, but Steelers don't make the playoffs without running the wheels off Bell. They don't win when he's not on the field.

ANY team can win on ANY given Sunday. With the way the Steelers play down to their opponents, It wouldn't surprise me to see them go 5-3

8-0, easy as pie

IF bell misses one practice, bench his ***, Tomlin!

What they need is success with Conner and not dropping the easy games. They lost to the Fish, then expectedly lost to NE especially with Ben out. He came back and they lost a dog to Ravens. Made it four after the Cowboys. Rightful panick set in and you have little choice.

Run the wheels off him!

MVP?

If we take his 2016 numbers and expand them to a 16-game season he finishes with 2,512 yards from scrimmage. That would be the best statistical season from an offensive player in the history of the NFL.

Another way to look at it is like this. Bell averaged 5.6 yards per touch in 2016, 1,884 yards on 336 combined rushes and receptions. If Bell could get to 400 total touches in 2017 at 5.6 yards per clip, that is 2,240 yards for a season.

Those numbers would be fantastic for his MVP bid and shity for a SB bid. The Steelers need to pace themselves and get home cooking in the playoffs. Part of the reason the Pats win is they are simply more rested. This team needs to win a bye and come in all guns blazing. No more of this limping in and playing wildcards. Wares you out. They need to develop a back around Bell and reduce his touches. I remember Bettis bulldozing this league until December when hed be at about 70 percent.

I'm with the Steelers here. Bell needs to prove he can test clean and be healthy for the playoffs to get long term deal. Until then, he can make only 12M a year, or whatever the tag amount is for a RB.

I think the RB room this year may very well be the best since Franco and Rocky. There's a distinct possibility that this three deep unit may all see action on a regular basis.

I see Bell getting the lions share with Conner getting carries toward the later half of the season ( fingers crossed ). Davis could light it up on returns enough to earn some reps too...err maybe. Anyway, if Toussaint wasn't a "teams demon", I don't think he gets a helmet at all, especially with Watson lurking in the back of the room.

Wish I could make it to the hillside a couple days this year but I guess I'll have to rely on our SN reporters again, it should be entertaining.

he can only go as far as his O-line will allow.

Does that include how HIGH he can go?????

We need to win but when push comes to shove and things are on the line, that's when you run his wheels off. If we are winning hand idly then slow his touches. It was uncalled for the number of touches in those first two playoff games. Save him when you can and run him hard when needed.

Salute the nation

The Steelers owe Bell nothing. If he wants to play hard ball and treat it like a job, then if he wants a raise he better perform.
Run him hard and make him produce. He wants to be paid like the top RB, then produce like the top RB

Here is the thing, you actually don't want to run his wheels off and it has nothing to do with contract, or injury, or playoffs.

You want to spell him of course to lessen the injury aspect, but you want to spread the ball out. To simply be less predictable. I think Bryant being out contributed to the Steelers feeling like they needed to lean more on him, a fair frame of mind last year.

This year with Juju and Bryant, and to a lesser degree Conner (hopefully to a greater degree as in he is productive) you have some pieces in place to spread that ball out a little less predictably. Haley for how temping it would be, for Bell's effectiveness. I still would lessen his carries, for a little more even distribution of the football.

The only advantage to Tomlin's insistence to sticking with the same back is ball security. You want to put the ball in the hands of the player that has the lowest chance of fumbling. Bell is excellent in this regard, and Willie was also very good.

They need to be more diverse in the passing game and less reliant on him. A better balance I would think is the objective.

Why is no one talking a possible trade? Is that a forbidden word? I'm sure there must be some opportunities for the Steelers out there. The uncertainty of injury, off field behavior, etc. ought to have the organization looking around, at least.

Steelers don't trade unless they are done with a player. They are not done with Bell..............yet.

I'm not an anti-player type of person and the owners certainly aren't hurting for money but I'm with the Steelers 100% on this.

Bell, as great as he is, has proven capable of making bad decisions that hurt the team. He set that history for himself.

He also has a history of injuries - not his fault and can't be projected into the future - but that history is also set. But even if he suffers no more injuries, past injuries do tend to impact future performance, especially at a position that tends to have a short shelf life to begin with.

When does $1 million dollars per month become unacceptable to anyone, in any profession, when there are any issues as to that person's future service?

Bell is probably making a bad bet here with not much upside for himself. If he fails another drug test or suffers another extended injury then he probably has no shot at $12M per year next season. Even if he performs at top level, the RB market has been devalued in the modern NFL for a number of years. I just don't see where the odds are in his favor on this.

With the cap going up every season and some teams are drastically under the cap I easily can see a team hand out a crazy contract to him...I just hope it isn't us.

For now

Le'Veon not planning regular-season holdout

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Le'Veon Bell "plans to play a full 16-game season"

Meaning he does not plan to holdout into the regular season. According to NFL Network's Ike Taylor, there is a "strong possibility" he will skip at least part of training camp, something he is able to do without fine because he has yet to sign his franchise tender.

On the contract front, Bell said he turned down an offer for reportedly "over" $12 million per year because he wants to be paid like a running back and a No. 2 receiver, a number Taylor thinks is around $15 million. That is probably not going to happen anytime soon considering the Steelers can franchise him again next year for around $14.5 million, but Bell should completely reshape the running back market when he signs a long-term deal.

Shades of Kordell Stewart.

Folks loved him for awhile too. Then he got greedy. Wanted the big money and the position.
