Draft Grades

1 TJ Watt OLB Wisconsin - A
They pretty much had to take Watt here. OLB was a huge need and Watt was the last of the top tier group. When Peppers and Njoku came off the board, Watt was the only choice.

2 JuJu Smith Schuster WR USC - B+
Wide Receiver was a big need. AB is the only reliable target. Who knows the future with Martavis? Coates can't be counted on. Rogers and Ayers are limited role players. Not only did they need a WR, but they needed a particular type, big and physical. The 2 that i wanted were Schuster and Godwin. I would have preferred Godwin but i'm happy with Schuster. Melifonwu, Awuzie, and Josh JOnes were picked just ahead of the steelers which made WR the best value with DB being so deep. Besides, they have 2 Third rounder so they can double up on DBs right?

3A Cameron Sutton CB Tennessee - B+
I would have preferred the taller Rasul Douglas but pretty much any CB is a good pick here. Sutton could be the man cover guy they need in the nickel.

3B James Conner RB Pitt - D
Conner will be a decent backup RB but i can't see taking a backup RB here when they could have locked down the OLB position with somebody like Carl Lawson or got another potential starting DB like Howard Wilson. Even if Watt is a stud, they still need depth so they can keep the pass rushers fresh. It's much harder to find a good pass rusher than a good backup RB. Same with the DBs.

4 Josh Dobbs QB Tennessee - C
It's pretty obvious that the steelers were dead set on drafting a QB and Dobbs was the guy. How serious are Ben's retirement threats? Based on his contract, he'd have to pay back tons of money if he retires early so it doesn't seem a QB was a glaring need. Sure you want to draft an eventual replacement but I'm not sure it had to be this year. This pick also factors into my low grade for Conner. The steelers had to know they were going QB in RD 4, which meant that when they picked Conner, the steelers knew that meant puching off DB until the end of RD 5.

5 Brian Allen DB Utah - A
He is a great athlete who likely would have been a much higher pick if DB wasn't so deep this year. He's a project though so he may have a hard time getting on the field. The Steelers track record under Tomlin of late round CBs has been pretty bad. They may have gotten very lucky that Allen was still on the board.

6 Colin Holba LS louisville - D
With the retirement of Warren i give this a D instead of F, but still, it's not like long snappers are that hard to find. Every team has one and most were street free agents and somehow each week we don't see tons of bad snaps and blocked kicks. Seemed a bit of a panic move to take a LS here. Cb Jalen Myrick, who the steelers visited multiple times was still on the board. Would drafting 3 DBs be overkill? Hell no. Not with as poorly as this secondary has played. Sutton and Allen aren't exactly sure things.

7 Keion Adams OLB Western Michigan - A
This is a great pick so late. He has the athletic tools to compete

Overall C+

I felt they had to come away from the draft with a Day 1 starting OLB and a backup OLB. Two DBs who can play as rookies like Burns and Davis did last year. They also needed a physical WR with hands to do the dirty work. They got Watt who should be a day 1 starter or at least a major role player from Day 1. They got the WR. They may have whiffed on DB. Burns and Davis were first and second rounders, but SUtton is a late 3rd and Allen is a late 5th.

This draft was very deep at CB so Sutton and Allen are better prospects than are usually available that late, but still you can't exactly pencil them in and the picks of Conner and Dobbs may have cost them getting that second DB or OLB that can contribute as a rookie.

The silver lining to me could be Allen and Adams. They are really great prospects for that late that could save this draft and this season. It's hard for me though to give the steelers a high grade for rolling the dice on filling their biggest needs with 5th and 7th rounders.

I feel like the steelers got too locked in on Conner and Dobbs and drafted each too high which jeopardized the rest of the picks. It seems they got luck with Allen and Adams falling to them.

Just because somebody makes their inside straight on the last card and takes the pot, it doesn't mean the hand was well played.

A+++++

We got a WR and RB, just like I demanded for Ben's offense - that's all that matters

Ben: "We want to score 30 points a game, that is our goal.”

Make the Offense Great Again!!!!

Wasn't a fan of the 2, 3b, 4 or 6 picks.

No idea why anyone would give a D grade for a 7th round pick unless it is a P, K or LS. The idea that someone else is 3 grades better and still on the board seems silly. Anyone better, at all, seems narrow with regards to how much better. Intellectual masturbation.

No idea why anyone would take a LS in the 6th, even if yours quit the day before the draft. It is a headscratcher. In the end, whoever else we picked would be lucky to make the roster, I guess.

For juju, I didn't look, but will take TMCs word for it that there was no one worth that spot at the OLB or CB spot. I wish we could have had someone take our 2, 3b and 4 (or 5) and moved up in the 2nd. I'd rather have one of those DBs, I think, but it doesn't appear as if juju or Conner suck. Dobbs may be an OK backup in the future, but I'd have risked not taking him.

You nailed it!

The #2 pick is a good player, but NOT a need, and the reason why our DB's won't get better soon enough.

3B was over drafted
4 I think is a wasted pick
6 was a joke of a pick

Day three sucked big time.

This entire draft might come down to the first two picks. Sutton is a complimentary DB and a decent role player, not a starter.

Nickel CBs are on the field 75-80% of the time. For years you've been calling for the Steelers to use a high pick on a nose tackle who would be on the field 25-50% of the time.

I'm really curious how the FO feels about LaDarius Green because we all feel he's one big hit from being out of football. I would have taken a TE somewhere earlier in the draft, either our 3B or round 4 pick IMO should have been a TE.

Drafting a long snapper was 100% unnecessary as we could have got one UDFA.

I think the fact they didn't draft a TE might speak more about how they feel about the outlaw than it does Green.

I guess I'm the only one that the LS pick doesn't bother. LS is a more important position than you think. Warren is getting up there in age, and not just anybody can step in and do it.

Yes, but if the draft pick doesn't win the job over Greg Warren, they we will cut him and won't be willing to use up a practice squad slot on a long snapper. In that case, the pick is a complete waster vs. a 6th rounder that could at least sit for a year on the practice squad. Although to be fair, last year's pick (Feeney) was plucked off our PS by the Saints...

They would have taken a tight end if value had arisen. Similarly, I don't think they were locked in on taking a QB in round 4 or at all.

My concern is that we could have gotten a guy like Lawson at Connor's spot. I like Connor, but our OLB's are old or unproven. We need more depth. Moats is old and mediocre, Chick is a backup, and Harrison is 39. 2 years from now Moats and Deebo won't even be on the team. If one of them goes down this year we are screwed. Would have liked to trade up in rd 3 to get a longer corner, but I like Sutton. I think Lawson at 3b, Connor in 4, Dobbs in 5 and I'd be happier.

I'll say this much. While nobody likes drafting a long snapper... I suppose we could always have Harrison do it eh?

Anybody who questions the WR pick did not see the Patriots game. We had absolutely nothing after Brown. NOTHING. Bryant's return is a plus but it can be taken away at any second whether thru injury or stupidity. The Steelers were determined to not be in that situation again if they can. Plus he brings a different dynamic thats needed. A big bodied, good hands, physical, move the chains guy. That was much needed on this offense

100% agree. Our offense has a ton of speed (Martavis, Coates) and a beast (AB). But we were missing a possession WR in the mold of Bolden or Ward, which is why the offense can look so inconsistent from time to time.

I honestly think that he will be our best pick of this draft.

I guess I was too busy noticing how Tom Brady threw for 380 yards and 3 scores while our defense let La Crosse player Chris Hogan go for 180 and two TD's. But we did hold Edlemen to 118 and 1 TD...

I noticed all the time Brady had to pick apart our secondary.

This is the thing I like JuJu as a player and feel he will fit will being that move the chain and red zone WR that Cobi Hamilton never turned into. I think this puts Bryant and Coates on notice, Bryant to stop smoking pot and Coates to stop dropping passes. I think DHB is going to have a tough time this year sticking with the team. He brings a lot to special teams but not a lot to the offense. He's on the wrong side of 30 and I feel he makes it through camp and is cut and the Steelers keep him in the back pocket if someone gets injured as I doubt anyone scoops him up after he's cut. I think Ayers has a tough row to hoe as there are 9 legit WR on the roster now and at most we keep 6. Likely 5.

My guess is AB, Bryant, Coates, JuJu, and Rogers with Ayers or Hunter having a shot if we keep 6 this year. But for Ayers to make the 53 man he has to return kicks and punts and for Hunter to make the squad he would have to prove he can play special teams as a gunner and maybe kick return man. I think Ayers at this point has a slight lead for 6th man (if there is a 6th man).

I think they were all set to take CB Awuzie but the cowboys took him so WR was the best pick. There were 11 combined CB and S drafted in rd 2 so by pick 30, it would have been a reach.

And our first and third round picks should help in that regard

Exactly - anybody that thinks this offense was "stacked" last year is a fool.

We had Ben, Bell and Brown - those were our playmakers capable of scaring the **** out of defenses. That's it.

Bell goes down, we lose.

Ben needs more top options, not these homerific bench scrubs at WR.

That's how you score 30 points a game to compete in the playoffs in the new NFL.

Can't disagree with that, but we also needed someone who can get to the QB in round 1. We got that. With Hunter, Bryant, Coates and now JuJu, we have options for Ben besides just AB. Good luck double teaming AB with Bryant on the field. That deep ball is gonna be trending in the Burgh this year.

Cincinnati TV station urges boycott of Bengals

Well, maybe the decision to draft running back Joe Mixon won’t go over as smoothly for the Bengals as believed. Local TV station WCPO, an ABC affiliate, wants fans to skip the team’s home games in 2017.

“We are urging every Bengals fan to take drastic action,” an online editorial explains. “Instead of buying a Bengals ticket this year, take the $50 or more you would have spent on that ticket and donate the money to a nonprofit that works to prevent violence against women. . . . Enough is enough, Bengals. We can excuse another season without winning a playoff game. We can’t excuse drafting a player like Joe Mixon.”

Mixon should kneel for the anthem week 1. Then media types won't know what to do when 2 politically correct issues collide. Which is the bigger media need, promoting women's issues or praising anybody who ***** on American pride? Heads would explode.
