RD1- TJ Watt OLB Wisconsin - A
I love this pick. Watt isn't the greatest athlete but neither was JJ. And I don't even like the comparison to JJ as they play completely different positions. If I was going to compare him to someone it would be Clay Matthews. And looking at size and combine numbers TJ gets the nod as the superior athlete between them. But like Clay and JJ TJ has a never stop motor and rare core body strength. Absolutely love this pick.
RD2- JuJu Smith-Schuster WR USC - B
I do like the pick but I'm not in love with it. Lots of WR left on the board, deep class period, and not a "need". But what I do like is JuJu is a natural hand catcher, runs solid routes, knows how to compete for the football. Don't like his separation or speed. If we got him a round later I'd be much more pleased but I do think the Steelers just put Bryant and Coates on notice. Compares to Anquan Boldin.
RD3a- Cameron Sutton CB Tennessee- B
Definitely a need, and I feel Sutton will be solid, not great. I think his upside is limited but his floor is high. Not very tall, short arms, small hands, average speed just nothing pops and says elite. But decent production at a very high collegiate level. Compares to Morris Claiborne.
RD3b- James Connor RB Pitt - B
This is an interesting pick. If he can get back to his Sophomore form he could be an awesome addition to the Steelers but the pick is risky. I like the kid and will root for him I just wonder what he will be. He's definitely a Steelers type player. High character, been through more adversity than most twice his age, well spoken and respectful. Comp picks are usually a reach for the Steelers and someone that they really like. Sometimes it works sometimes they are Dri Archer. I am excited to see him in camp and hope he's 100%. Compares to Jeremy Hill
RD4- Joshua Dobbs QB Tennessee - B
Dobbs is again a high character and highly intelligent guy. Aerospace engineer who is currently building his own plane for his degree. Dobbs is intriguing as he has all the brains you want, a very good arm, nice mobility but for whatever reason he didn't "wow". Maybe it's because of his heavy school workload or maybe he's a very smart guy but not a special football player. Compares to Tyrod Taylor / Teddy Bridgewater
RD5- Brian Allen CB Utah - B+
Very athletic with A+ size. Has nimble feet, soft hands, and his receiver skills definitely show. Very raw tackling and at this point a liability if he's supposed to stop someone or support the run or bubble screen. I like the athleticism and size but can he develop enough to make the 53 man? He's going to have to play special teams I feel to make it. Compares to Sean Smith
RD6- Colin Holba LS Louisville - F
He's a ******* long snapper. Compares to a ******* long snapper.
RD7- Keion Adams OLB Western Michigan - B
Adams is a very quick edge rusher who seems to be in the backfield all the time. He definitely will be taking a big step forward going to the NFL but he's a perfect fit for the practice squad and development rusher. Compares to Clark Haggans
Overall I give the Steelers a solid B.
