JuJu Smith-Schuster will bring grit to the Steelers locker room

The USC product isn't a speed demon, but he plays with toughness and is willing to do anything to help his team win.

The 20-year-old receiver brings toughness, reliable hands, and solid route-running to Pittsburgh’s receiving corps.

JuJu Smith-Schuster isn’t a speed demon like some of the other receivers in this draft class, but he provides an element coaches want out their receivers: grit. He isn't afraid to battle for 50-50 balls, run routes over the middle of the field, or deliver bone-crushing blocks. At 6’2, 216 pounds, he has the size to shield defenders from the ball and snag it. His play style is Anquan Bolden-esque.

Pittsburgh should be excited about selecting Smith-Schuster because he plays with intensity and loves to get physical with defenders. He’s also an excellent run-blocker.

During his three-year stint in Southern California, Smith-Schuster hauled in 213 passes for 3,092 yards and 25 touchdowns.

oops - a little late, still spurting - merge me

I'm psyched with a pick like this.....great pickup in the 2nd round! Love the physical style of play!

Lol at Punx, I like the player...not crazy about the pick.

Martavis is an idiot for what he tweeted toward Coates.

lol that's Sammie coates replacement not minds take it how you want to I am back.

I'm thinking he said "Not mine"

Apparently the Steelers had a late first round grade on Juju so he might have been the pick even if Awuzie and Jones weren't taken the previous 2 picks.

Did they not go to the same school? Tomlin tweeted play nice boys. Pretty sure he was told to delete it. Yes there are snowflakes who like the Steelers and well....

Side note I asked my wife around pick 5 " honey you want JU JU nite nites on the steeler team"?
We used to say that to kids before bed LMAO how crazy

Smith-Schuster said he was surprised when he heard the Steelers drafted him because they had not spoken to him other than a 15-minute “speed dating session” (as Smith-Schuster called it Friday).

Apparently, some of the other Steelers receivers were surprised by the pick, too — at least if their tweets are to believed.

Soon after the pick, a since-deleted message posted to Bryant's verified Twitter account read: “lol that's Sammie coates replacement not minds take it how you want to I am back.”

Coates tweeted laughter in response. Eventually, coach Mike Tomlin tweeted for the first time in 107 days, telling Bryant and Coates to “play nice boys.”

Smith-Schuster? His only tweets read about being “blessed” and how he was “Ready To Work!!!!”

Haley gushed about Smith-Schuster's competitiveness and passion, lauding the receiver's blocking ability.

Smith-Schuster returned some kickoffs in college but said he has not returned punts since high school.

“Honestly, I'll do anything possible to bring the Steelers back to the lowB repuS,” Smith-Schuster said, “whether it's on special teams, it's being a backup, being a role player — anything that it takes.”

“I have an opportunity to have mentors like those guys over there and to learn as a young dude coming in,” Smith-Schuster said.

JuJu, listen to the Franco clip from round one. It's Steeler Nation. Not Steelers Nation.

Any guy who is being compared to Hines Ward, and Anquan Boldin sounds like a good one to me.

When I watched film on JJSS, the first guy that came into mind for me was Keenan Allen. Prior to being drafted, Allen only ran the 40 because he was coming off an injury and ran a poor 4.7ish time. Teams backed away from him. I remember begging for him in the 1st/2nd that year and looking like an *** because he went in the 3rd. So, it sticks with me. But, what he did well was he had excellent hands, ran great routes, came across the middle fearlessly, would make contested catches, and once he caught it, if he could run to daylight, he would. If there wasn't daylight, he would drop his pads and get what he could, often running through some DBs. To me, JJSS is exactly that. He is a legit starting WR in this league, big (bigger than Allen), great hands, nasty blocker, will run through blocks if he cannot run around them, doesn't go down on first contact, fearless over the middle, high points passes on the deep end.

A lot of guys wanted Chris Godwin. Very similar players except Godwin is more athletic (although he doesn't play to it like JJSS does) and JJSS has more consistent hands. The way I see it, the Steelers WR group was riddled with injury last year, could not stay on the field, and the guys they had could not get open well enough. Wheaton is gone. Bryant is back, but you cannot count on him. Coates had the hand issue and I've heard his fingers are pretty jacked up. If Bryant decides to Santonio Holmes it this year, JJSS can start opposite of Brown with Rogers in the slot. If Bryant returns and is a beast, JJSS can play the slot because he is fearless. When you start chunking other guys like Green, Bell, maybe Ayers in the mix, the WR room and offensive weapons are starting to round out. Shouldn't be trotting out street free agents you signed off the practice squad in week 2.

I for one have no problem with Bryant's tweet. Nothing like some competition. There are jobs on the line. You want one you better show up and ball out.

Steelers Expect Smith-Schuster To Elevate Competition In Crowded Receiver Room

BY MATTHEW MARCZI APRIL 29, 2017 AT 06:20 AM

Look back to the early stages of the 2016 regular season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and consider who they had at the wide receiver position. There was, of course, the All-Pro, Antonio Brown. But functioning as their second wide receiver early on was Sammie Coates, and in the slot was Eli Rogers, neither of whom did anything really the year before. Markus Wheaton was virtually a non-factor.

Since that time, the Steelers have now added to the wide receiver pool the conditionally-reinstated Martavis Bryant, who has obvious Pro-Bowl potential, and as of last night, the 6’2” JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is an interesting player relative to the function he could serve in Pittsburgh, which Alex Kozora will be having more on later.

So now the Steelers are bringing into the 2017 season a wide receiver group that highly probably is going to consist at least of Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Rogers, which is being very conservative in weighing the 75-percent-likely guys.

Beyond those four, there is Coates, who showed quite a bit in his first five games last season before suffering a hand injury. Where he fits in this year will obviously be a storyline to watch. Also added in free agency is the tall and fast Justin Hunter, who is an interesting piece in his own right.

That isn’t even including Darrius Heyward-Bey, Cobi Hamilton, and Demarcus Ayers, who during parts of last season were three of their top four or five at the position, though that came to be due to injuries and other issues.

What this does, as offensive coordinator Todd Haley said after the Steelers made the selection, is that it makes the wide receiver highly competitive. We are talking about a group of wide receivers that includes nine players who can be regarded as NFL-caliber, and likely at least three of them are not going to make the roster.

“We do have a number of players at the receiver position that we’re excited about, and this is now another young guy that we added to the group that will just elevate that competition even more”, he said of the addition of Smith-Schuster.

“When you have great competition I think you tend to see the cream rise to the top, so to speak”, he said. I think when you have a group of eight wide receivers who have or can be on an NFL roster, it goes without saying that a high-round prospect dropped into the middle of that mix will certainly up the competitive edge.

And we already saw that on Twitter from Bryant and Coates, which coaxed Mike Tomlin out of his Twitter slumber to tell them to play nice. But I’ll have more of my own take on that particular incident a bit later. For now, suffice it to say that the Steelers are assuring that they will get the most out of the wide receiver position at a critical juncture—pardon the Tomlinism—while adding security for the long term.

I liked JuJu prior to seeing his measurables. Hopefully he can create separation in the NFL with much faster DB's. He should immediately be a red zone target. Taking him in the 2nd has me doubting they take a TE in the draft.

He's a nice possession receiver. Loves to play, good hands, and a willing blocker, BUT we lose in the playoffs because of DEFENSE, not our #2 or #3WR.

Not a bad player, but we should have sent cornerback!
