QB in round one?! Colbert likes someone.

Cowher with Ben is 5-1 in the playoffs. And he never saw Ben's best years. Tomlin is close to .500 with Ben.

I also feel that losing O'Donnell thanks to Rooney being cheap cost the Steelers another super bowl appearance. As it was, the team had the Cowboys dynasty team at their peak on the ropes until late in the 4th quarter.

Hahahahahahaha, this is got to be the most ludicrous comment of the short year!!!

Rooneys being cheap on signing O'Donnell? He went to the Jets on a monster and outrageous contract, that was never lived up to. He faded away like Gen. Douglas McCarther. The offense at that time was built for rushing and controlling TOP. O'Donnell was NOT the centerpiece. Defense and ground game was. The fact they didn't sign O'Donnell, is the reason why The Bus came to Pittsburgh.

You are correct that Dallas was on the ropes, but who and what was the culprit to the loss in that game? Here is a reminder.... 2 picks from #14.

Coaching.....?

Nope Ark. Cowher coached pretty well in that game. Player execution contributed to that loss. Some say wrong routes initiated, others say terrible decision by the signal caller. IMO, the latter.

If the Steelers do pick a QB in the 1st round (and, I hope they don't pick one in the entire draft), then we know that they know Ben is out of here in a year or two. You draft your potential next starting QB with a year or two left before Ben hangs them up.

And who was that one team Cowher lost to in the playoffs?

Wasn't it a blowout similar to the loss we just had in the AFC championship.

apparently, this is irrelevant. EVERYONE but Tomlin and Butler knows how to stop the *'s. Very few actually DO it, but they know how. That is WAAY better. I guess.

Didn't we blitz and give huge big plays in that game??

The Steelers said Andre Hastings ran the wrong route for the game clinching interception.

But Dallas was not in the super bowl every year. We were in AFC title championship games with O'Donnell, and outside of a fluke play by a Chargers defender, would have been in two super bowls with him.

O'Donnell was a good QB, doing it with average type of WR's and backs, if you care to remember. When you are close to a Super Bowl, you don't cut ties and gamble....Rooney did, and it cost the Steelers.

End of.

Irrelevant. The only way to win was to pressure Brady or get turnovers when he throws them, or when the refs allow him to fumble. They were going to score anyway. The coaches gave him the easiest path to victory with that soft zone crap. EPIC FAILURE.

I care to recall Dallas was in the SB in 93,94 and 96. So in a four year stretch they were in three of them.

I also recall Pitt made the playoffs each year from 93-98, making it to the AFCC three times and losing twice.

Fluke play? Like the one we had the following year that got Pitt to the SB? Please, it's part of plying the game. You win/lose by inches sometimes.

I never said #14 wasn't a good QB during his time at Pitt, but some questionable decisions in big games. He also had some weapons in Thigpen, Hastings and Ernie Mills. Don't know the specific stats but I think they caught 20 passes between them as Yancey was doubled the whole game.

Two picks and sacks during crucial passing downs. That doesn't help you win ball games and comes with the territory of being the QB.

Getting that 5 year 25 mil contract with a 7 mil bonus was huge in 96. As for "cutting ties gambling", cheap Rooney deal to O'Donnell was only $1.25 mil less per year than what he Jets told Steinberg and O'Donnell. His agent said he was comfortable #14 staying in Pitt, but O'Donnell CHOSE to go to NY. That story ended in two short years. So there was no gambling. #14 took the $ and ran. Plain and simple, while Tomczak/Miller/Kordell era began and still made it to the playoffs each year after #14 left for NY with one AFCC appearance.

The argument is make it to the super bowl, not win it. The Steelers almost upset Dallas. I was proud of that effort.

LOL, I take it you forget how the Steelers were picked apart in free agency before the was a cap, and they were stuck with Three Rivers Stadium type of money. Before the cap Rooney was most certainly known as cheap!

Losing O'Donell cost us a lowB repuS, so to me he was worth the money as we had a team to win it all with him.

Tomzack, Miller, and Stewart were a notch below O'Donnell. Kordell Stewart had a pick three in the AFC championship game vs the Denver Broncos in 1997, and that was a winnable game ( We lost 24-17 ) without those three turnovers. Fans went home sad that day....a blown home game for the AFC championship. With O'Donnell I'd bet a few mortgage payments the Steelers win it AND advance to the lowB repuS.

He took the MONEY. The Steelers didn't offer anything close.

How can you quote Ike's post and still say something not remotely true. He just told you they were only1.25 million apart.

You said when you are close to a SB not win it. AFCC with Stewart they were 3 points down with 2:00 left, Den on 3rd down and long inside their 20. Sharpe caught a pass for 1st down which practically sealed it. All the while Stewart throwing 3 picks, 2 inside the Denver 20, but only one resulting in a score. This doesn't include a fumble by Stewart again in Denver territory, but no points given up.

That game Pitt should have won big, as the Defense was controlling Elway. #10 and his poor decision (as did #14 who had a pick 3 as well in SB XXX) cost us that game. Had we won, we had the D to shutdown Green Bay, and the offense to score on their defense.

Before the cap? Gheez, do you not understand the economics of the league back then? Pitt revenue stream was minimal compared to the big market teams before FA. Three Rivers wasn't a cash cow and the TV market in the 80s and 90s wasn't kind to Pittsburgh.

But your opinion is what it is...yours.

No it wasn't similar. Our team was 15-1 on a 15-0 win streak, only to get blown out by a team whose defense was calling out our plays at the line of scrimmage. That game was over before it started. At least we made it to halftime with a chance this year.

Ike, with O'Donnell do you think we win that game and play in another super bowl? I recall one Stewart pick in the end zone,. Like you said 4 turnovers by a qb is tough to overcome.

where does it say Colbert liked him??? maybe he went and thought the kid was flawed.......

Colbert won't tip his hand but there were only two GM's there and Colbert was one of them:

There were no NFL head coaches present at the Tar Heels practice field, and just two general managers — Pittsburgh’s Kevin Colbert and San Francisco’s John Lynch. The 49ers own the second overall pick in next month’s draft and are expected to take a quarterback.

Trubisky showcased his impressive arm talent with a script that featured a wide-ranging route tree to all levels of the field. He consistently put the ball on target with proper velocity. He illustrated clean upper and lower body mechanics and comfort sliding his feet.

if Watson or Trub fall of course they'd be good drafting option and the Steelers would be fools not to scout them. Even if it were for trading them next season for an early 1st

Walter Camp has us taking Watson. If they really like a QB and he's still on the board, they'd be crazy not to draft him.
