We have two third round picks.

Ben is now 35 ( and still elite ), but he has flirted with retirement. It might make sense to pick an upside developmental guy in round three. Two reasons. Landry Jones is pretty poor, and the Steelers the are too talented to be picking in the top 20 for 2017 and 2018. So take your shot now to upgrade the back up QB, and offer a path to a possible starter post Ben.

The guy I like a lot for development is Webb, He stood out at senior bowl week, and played a good game. I think he's an upside type with good passing skills, and only needs more reps to work on the mental part of the game.

Manziel.

Intangibles baby!

for example: you don't know if he's gonna show up sober to the team meeetings.

you don't know if he's gonna run over a pedestrian in traffic.

you don't know if he's gonna go crazy over a fake ex-girlfriend who's way too hot for him and dumps him after his money situation starts looking bad.

So Many Intangibles!

I had Webb on some mocks, I think you will have to pull the trigger in three to get him.

Ben has to be sick of the, me first/look at me, attitude. The main reason he has thought of hanging them up.

we need a QB. If we are gonna be a ball control team, draft someone this year.

And I'll keep saying it. I'd rather have Tebow...

I wouldn't mind taking James Conner with the late 3rd round pick instead of a throwaway QB.

I would say let's see what happens to Jones in his FA but the more I think about Ben's performance the last couple years ( in a word, erratic )..it doesn't matter what happens to Jones. We need someone dependable pretty quick ...........and like SDS said..

Well I don't know about the ball control thing, that maybe pie in the sky under Tomlin but we do need someone capable of learning our system fairly quickly before Ben hits his inevitable "wall". He may only have 2-3 years before he either loses interest or his playing style does him in. Jus sayin' !

While I think they will draft a QB in rd 3, I wish they wouldn't.
Resign Landry to be the backup. He knows the system and is better than half the bacups out there.
He won't command tons of money like some of the others.

Don't draft a guy to compete with Landry to be the backup. It's a wasted pick.
Wait until next year or the year after and go get your guy that you feel can be a franchise guy.
If it takes moving up, do it.

QB is the most prized position in sports. You have to have a good one to succeed. Do what you have to do to get one.

MAYBE it was meant to say CONCEPT but got autocorrected??? BUT none the less it would still apply in a juices flow creative way.......

Makes sense and patience is required for this maneuver !!! Laundry isn't the best by far but on the flip side of that coin..... He's not the worst either.

Landry Jones and Zach Mettenberger. No need to draft a QB. Unless it's more as a scare tactic to step up Landry's game

Wait another year, unless there is someone we really like on day 3.

This is a constant thought among many Steeler fans as evidenced in this thread, and I don't understand it after the 80s and 90s QB play. Why not take one in the first 3 rounds this year who will have time to sit behind Ben and develop? Especially with the extra 3rd rd pick. Is it that mantra that has been oft repeated this year that this is such a weak QB class? Well take a look at next years:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2018/QB

I don't really see anything there that tells me next years will be better, and considering that unless we tank a season we will not see the likes of a Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen in 2019 let alone that list of 2018 prospects that even sniff our pick range. So if you want to wait until Ben actually does retire and we're not prepared for it so that we have to start a Hoyer or McCown type while we "find" a QB that is your prerogative. I on the other hand would rather try to take a talented developmental QB this year who needs time to reach his potential (which I believe this "weak" draft class has many of these), and can spend time ala Aaron Rodgers, learning and developing behind Roethlisberger. This QB draft class is only considered weak due to there being no one ready to start immediately, and as Mayock stated during the combine " these QBs have first round talent, but they're not ready to start". The question is do we need one who is ready to start, or a 1st round talent that will be taken late 1st and beyond because he needs to sit and learn? I see no reason why you wait until the need is dire and your forced to reach or search desperately.

Mettenberger NEVER won a game as a starter, and Jones is awful. No need to draft a QB you say with Ben being 35?

I saw a bleacher report mock last night that has us taking a QB in the 3rd round. I hope we don't. I would wait one more year.

Why wait? It's a need now and in the future. This is a 10-6- to 12-4 type of team meaning top QB's will be gone before we pick next year

This year, there are some talents that won't go in rounds 1-2, but they need a lot of work. With two 3rd round picks a pick on one of these type of talents makes sense.
