Watched a bit of the east west shrine game last weekend. It had a steeler flavor with Brentson Buckner as head coach of the east along with assistant coaches, Hank Fraley, Deshea Townsend, Larry Foote, Duce Staley and former Penn Stater Bobby Engram.

Senior bowl practices, day one.

Now scouting QB's as Ben's status, for now, is murky. How were the QB;s as a group? They sucked overall and made it tough to evaluate some of the receivers...in practice. Egads!

Davis Webb was the best of the bunch. A tall lanky type with a decent arm and accuracy who took over Cal's offense from last years #1 overall pick Jeff Goff

Webb's footwork is average, and his release to me is a little slow. He will need a good OL, but if you give him that he could be a decent backup or to the mid-level starter as he's a natural type of passer who puts the ball where it is supposed to be. Webb can move up draft boards if he keeps showing well. Who would I compare him to? A bit like Leftwich, but not with that type of arm. With the need for QB's Webb could go in round two. I have not been happy with our back up situation. Okay with picking a player like this in round three.

Other guys who stood out

That USC Defensive Tackle. Stevie Tu'ikolovatu. Strong as a bull, moved guys backward with ease. He's got about 50 pounds on the OL players. If we switch to a 4-3, this is a guy I like for some base packages. I think he would be an upgrade over McCullers, and complement Hargrave in a 4-3. Looks like rounds 3-5 type of guy. Limited, but great at what he does. Can get inside pressure which will lead to a hurried QB flushed for faster players to sack him,

Carroll Phillips. This cat is a playmaker! Only one practice but I saw first round ability as a pass rusher. He can shoot the gaps to make plays vs the run or pass. And his speed rush was too much for most of the OL players. He has some moves too. I'm officially a fan. Not sure at his run defense, could be suspect and overmatched vs the run vs NFL tackles

O.J Howard. I wondered how much of his success ha to do with playing in Alabama. The answer, very little. He's a stud TE. Very athletic. Surprisingly strong, and with good hands. I think he's a top 15 pick, which is sort of rare for a Tight End. I'd love him in round one. Not happening unless we trade up.

Ohio State's Tarell Basham looked strong and had enough speed in coverage. An intriguing player, he's a 4-3 end that weighs about 260 pounds. Could be an OLB in our system and player we look at in rounds two or three.

Nate Peterman is consistently being hyped up as the best quarterback so far. He improved each year at Pitt and it'll be interesting how high teams are on him in a relatively weak quarterback class. Surprising mobile in the pocket and decent accuracy, can spread the ball around and is slowly developing touch.

The guy everyone will be watching is Tanoh Kpassagnon DE Villanova. He's nearly 6'7 280 lbs with 34 7/8 inch arms. Long arms and athletic. If this kid tests well, somebody is going to take a shot on him early.

Tyus Bowser, LB, Houston

Bound to be a name bracket champion somewhere, Tyus Bowser doesn’t have the national profile of a Reuben Foster or Zach Cunningham, but he was an integral part of a strong Houston defense. His pass rushing skills are top notch, as he tallied 8.5 sacks in just eight games. He had an astounding 24.5 sacks as a senior in high school.

he only played 8 games last season because he got into a scuffle with another LB on what was supposed to be a "fun" day at practice and ended up with a broken orbital bone.....

Is he related to Ronda Rousey?

early in the year when i heard Peterman talked about as one of the best QBs in the country, i thought they were nuts. But this class of QBs is so weak that Peterman may be the best, and i think his ceiling is an Alex Smith or Chad Pennington.

Who else is there? Desean Watson has lots of upside but he's got lots to learn. His best moments are on broken plays and not just dropping back and throwing on time to an open man.

Watson is bound to benefit from Dak Prescott. The problem is, Dak did not really have a great season as a passer. Sure he made plays when he had to but his job was really easy. That OL and the run game with Elliott was so good that teams had to committ 8 to stop it. That left Dak with all day to throw against some really soft coverages.

That's not taking away from Dak. He had a great season for a rookie, but his situation was unique. Few rookies get to play on such a good team. Some team is bound to think Watson can do the same but he's likely a project.

Deshon Kizer? I saw him play plenty of times and at no time did i ever think i was watching a great QB. At times, i thought he sucked. He has all the physical tools and ND had enough talent around him that he should have been better .

Mitch Trubisky. This guy just looks streaky to me. Feasted on bad defenses and struggled vs good ones.

There's not a single QB in this draft that i would spend a high pick on. They all look like projects or backups to me. I would rather spend a pick on CJ Beathard of Iowa or Josh Dobbs of Tennessee in a late round.

Dobbs is the guy who could be this year's Dak Prescott. The knock on Prescott was accuracy, but he wasn't coached as a passer. He was coached to run a spread. Dobbs could be in that same boat and benefit from coaching.

I am done scouting and ranking RB's and Safeties so far.

This year, I'm staying completely off the grid on what people think. I had my friend randomize the lists of players ranked with a 6th round or higher grade over at CBSSports draft website to send me before I go to Draft Breakdown and watch their cut-up videos. The only info I have going into the game tape is height/weight (from their school).

So far, it's kind of amazing how close my lists have been to the "experts", although I think running backs and safeties are two of the easiest positions to evaluate.

I'll post everything I have as it gets closer to draft time. I want to get all the positions done before the combine, then revisit my lists based on combine performance and what the "experts" are saying at that point.

That's a good breakdown of the QBs, tape. I watched Trubisky play and never got the impression he'd be a top NFL prospect, then I heard the hype he could be the top guy in the draft. I like Watson, but not as a an early pick. If Peterman can become another Alex Smith, a team would be getting tremendous value. I don't think he's a guy that'll carry a team, but can succeed with enough talent around him.

This weak QB class shows what a huge mistake the browns made last year. They got all this credit for trading back and getting more picks. For some reason, that always gets praised. It's viewed as being wise and patient. Sometimes it is but sonetimes it's just cowardly, not wanting to make a decision and that's what i think the browns did.

they should have stayed where they were and drafted Wentz. Now they have a ton of picks and no good QBs to pick.

Zsa Jones - Wr - East Carolina is making $$$ today...

Had a 158 receptions this year! Yes that's one seasons total...

Steelers do need a WR.............

Doesnt seem like Dak is getting enough credit. I get that Dallas was a good team, but their defense was pretty poor. Now Elliot and the Oline were great, but Dak also played a good amount without Dez and even when Dez came back it took them several games to seem to get in rhythm. Dak also played very well in crunch time situations. Even in the playoff loss his WRs were not helping much especially early on and they still almost pulled it off.

As for Watson he showed great heart in the NC game. He was getting destroyed and could have pulled a Cam Newton, but he got it together and led an amazing comeback. As a pro not sure where watson falls in. I think it will be tough for him to make it. He seems to throw a lot of INTs, is small framed, and not terribly accurate. I think with the right team he might make it, but if he goes to a team like the browns then not likely.

I did see a guy yesterday I put on my list as a potential #1. He is an ILB/OLB from Temple named Riddick_6 1--237---4.5 40. Long range replacement for Timmons and till then a potential pass rush/cover package guy.

Rivers---DE projected as a 3-4 OLB out of Youngstown ST. looked like a good third day pick also..

Interesting tidbit on Dalvin Cook

http://walterfootball.com/seniorbowl2017rumors4.php

The combine interviews and pre-draft visits are going to be very important for Dalvin Cook. There are some minor off-the-field concerns regarding Cook; not so much with his character, but the company he keeps. Cook is said to have an entourage that has some real thugs. These friends have teams worried that it could be dangerous for Cook to continue hanging around them. Teams are concerned that Cook drinks a heavy amount and could have some challenges with his focus from having multiple kids with multiple women. They think that leaving the state of Florida would be good for Cook's long-term career and could help him to focus on becoming a professional.

However, some team sources are worried the entourage will follow Cook wherever he goes, as that was the case at Florida State. Thus, it would help Cook to go to a team with established leadership in the locker room that can help steer him in the right direction.

Webb had a better week and game. With good workouts, this one time projected 3-4th round pick can go as high as round one, or early round two. In the game, Webb directed scoring drives on all three of his possessions.

Do I think he's worth a 1st round pick? Maybe for a QB starved team just because this QB draft class is pretty weak.

OJ Howard made a mistake by playing his senior year. He's the #1 TE this year and he would have been the #1 TE last year. Last year, Hunter Henry was the 1st TE taken and that was in RD 2. The next TE taken was Austin Hooper in the middle of rd 3.

Howard didn't raise his stock at all. He just cost himself a year of getting paid.

I look at Dak's rookie season as being very similar to Ben's. They relied on the run and simplified the offense. Dak has a very good foundation to build off of so if he works hard and develops as a passer he could be great in 3 years. Or he could rest on this season and struggle mightily in 3 years. It's up to him he has the potential for both.
