Report: Salary cap expected to rise to $166M-170M for 2017 season
Arun Srinivasan Dec 13, 2016 7:11 PM
The NFL's salary cap is expected to rise to $166 million-$170 million for the 2017 season, USA TODAY's Tom Pelissero reports.

Teams were informed of the expected rise Tuesday. The current salary cap stands at $155.27 million.

An exact figure will not be determined until the new league year commences in March. The NFL is expected to announce a projected cap number later this week.

This is good news for the players and that's the only people for which it is good news.

For players and for fans of teams who need to sign their players. We will be way under the cap for a change..that's good news

Brown 5 yrs $90mill

Bell 5 yr $75 mill

Not my money. Get it done front office.

The Steelers are already reported to be under the cap next year bigly around the time of 20 million or so. This increase will be yuge. Hey may be able to retain Bell and Brown as well as attract a few other big dogs to the table.

How 'bout they freeze the escalation of them multimillion dollar salaries and use some of that money to lower the price of tickets instead.

Not going to happen but a great thought. THESE nfl owners / league are nothing but about the $$$$$ if they had their way, no pay increase for anyone except for us fans to pay MORE.!!!!

Salute the nation

If the cap hits $170 we will be almost 40m under the cap.

No. Every team will need to sign players and every team will have an increased salary cap and will compete for those players. The price for the players we want to sign will just go up.

No! Our competition just got the same increase. If anything, this is good news for teams that have cap problems.

I'm talking about money to sign our players. As Steelersfan81stated if the cap goes up that much we will have over 40 million in cap room.. Doesn't matter if it the price goes up we will have money to sign them. We pay top price for players we want and who are worth it...

Sign our key players first...then I'd hit the market for an outside linebacker. I love Harrison, and he's kicking ***...but for how much longer?

Sign our guys then go get Chandler Jones

That will give every team more cap space too. We are way under the cap, but how many players do we have signed for 2017? I hope we can keep Brown and Bell, but there's guys on D that will want paid too, Shazier and Tuitt especially.

The thing that will separate the Steelers from the rest, Big Ben. With cap room and a great quarterback, it makes coming to Pittsburgh very attractive. Especially to those wanting to increase their chances of going to winning a championship.

I'm CERTAIN we can find a DYNAMIC PASS RUSHING DEMON w/ all dat extra moola in free agency...
I would really hope so. AB, Bell, Tuitt, Shazier, and Cockrell all need re-signed first. Hopefully we can get everyone signed and then add an OLB. Not sure what's on the market.

I think we can 5th year option Shazier without worrying about losing him. Cockrell will be affordable, and Tuitt will get a pay raise, but fortunately he's not in the elite category.

I'd rather sign 50 before he can test the market. A fifth year option will prob be 10mil. Might as well sign him.

No way do we let Tuitt walk - he's not elite, yet, but, his potential and ceiling are very high!!!
