How many years have we not had any competent back up QBs?

I mean, I am not asking for us to have a known world beater for a backup QB, I am just asking why they continue to offer NOTHING but known horse **** at back up QB.

Who have we had at backup QB?

Landy Jones. The eye test reveals he is one of the worst backups in the entire NFL.

Bruce Gradkowski. Hasn't been healthy in years, and even if he was, he is just awful, but this is who they entered the preseason with. Brilliant.

Charlie Batch. Decent backup when he wasn't almost 40. But 40 year olds are not competent football players. Even the great Peyton Manning became terrible approaching 40.

Byron Leftwich. Seriously? His windup takes longer than boiling water.

Tommy Maddox. Had one decent year, and other than that was pretty much Landry Jones.

Kent Graham. Not called "Frankengraham" for nothing.

Apparently, this franchise thinks any breathing body will do at backup QB.

I, for one, am sick of it.

Even the Jets, after going through their #1 and #2 Qbs STILL have some POTENTIAL in TWO other young guys who could offer potential. We NEVER have ANY backup QBs who offer possible developmental potential. Why is that, exactly?

Does that seem like a wise way to go?

Ben Roethlisberger was a good backup for Tommy Maddox.

Honestly POP, who would you rather have? There's not even 32 good quarterbacks in the league, let alone backups. Landry is probably one of the better backups in the NFL.

There's a reason backups carry clipboards.
If you stumble upon one good enough to be a starter, they will be, either on their present team or somewhere else.

No, Landry is not even a backup. He's a third-string quarterback masquerading as a backup.

Compared to the rest of the league, I don't think he's that bad.

steelers need to do their research and find a decent qb in this draft.

I've been all about treating back up QB like near any other position only instead of a 1-2yr payback, it's a 2-3yr payback. I feel we should always be looking for better and or someone to give honest competition. I feel our current coaching staff maybe sees more than we see in Laundry but has failed in the looking for betterment. Isn't TC all about better competition? Seems we don't bring anybody that is remotely capable of challenging the back up QB position. I know we "RIDE" with what we got for the remainder of this season. If by chance Laundry pulls an upset and proves otherwise, I say bring in the best competition you can and oust that dude.

Salute the nation

Outside of Dallas and NE not too many teams have a legit #2, hell some still need a 1.

If we don't resign him after this year he will probably find a job rather quickly as a middle of the pack #2.

Wish we had a better #2, but we already spend a disproportionate amount on offense and QBs aren't cheap if they are a decent veteran. So sure we could could possibly get a backup option that is a tad better, but that's another $3-5M that won't be invested on the defensive side of the ball.

Leftwich and Batch were godsends back then. Did you see the **** other teams had? Chad henne, kellen clemens, jp losman....good god. It wasn't until dirty landry that the backup situation here sucked.

Christ....We signed Vick last year. And we all saw how that played out. Dude couldn't hit the side of a barn if his life depended on it.
Jones has a bit of experience now. I like our chances tomorrow. If Jones just plays within the system. We have too many weapons to not have a shot. Of course our STARS need to step up because well ...that what STARS are suppose to do. A couple of defensive TO's to give our offense some short field opportunities. Plus maybe a special team TD on a punt return. And if Tomlin coaches a great game. The coaches make the right adjustments during the game. Yes. I see us pulling this game out. I might be in the minority here, but I see us doing it. GO STEELERS!!!!!

Oh....and **** the PATS****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you're sayin there's a chance...

All we have to do is get 2 TOs vs Brady
Add a ST TD
And have Tomlin out coach Bellicheat

Seems easy enough

You want your backup to come in a get you a win. Batch, Maddox, Lefty, Landry, and Vick all did that.

I never remember anyone complaining about Manning's backup in Indi. Hell most people didn't even know he HAD a backup...

Evidence of this? Thanks

I'm not sure what sort of evidence I can give you. I just think that there aren't even enough good quarterbacks for the 32 NFL teams, let alone for a backup. I think he sucks, but sucks less than some other bums. If he can know the playbook, our defense should still be the reason we lose tomorrow.

Brother, I think most THIRD stringers are better than LJ.

I just looked at the list; half seem better than LJ and the other half I know nothing about. And, it's not just that I think he stinks; it's also that we have no young talent with any HOPE of developing that bothers me most. We KNOW LJ will never amount to jack ****.

Which is actually another point all in itself: Manning didn't miss games, Ben is all but guaranteed to every year, so we NEED a decent backup.

This team refuses to take the backup QB position with enough attention. They make almost zero attempt to improve it. Hoody tries to improve every unit, every year. That will be on display tomorrow, unfortunately.

Why are you placing whether we win or lose on Jones alone. We have an offense loading with talent. That in itself is funny. Let our coaches create the right game plan and we should win if the players execute it to perfection. It is simply that easy. I for one will enjoy watching them win this game. It is why they play the game. Oh by the way....**** your Tommyboy and the PATS****!!!!!!!

I'm assuming that you know that the Steelers pay Ben a little more than $18m a year. On the same note Jones makes a little under $800k and Mettenberger a little less than that.

To get a good QB, it will be more expensive than both our back-ups put together. Until we see relief from Ben's salary, I'm afraid Landry Jones will probably have to do.

My daddy used to say, "you can want in one hand and **** in the other..until you can pay for it, that's all you get"

Batch was decent but was too old the last few years. Again, zero guys put in the position with any up side. Why do they refuse to even TRY to develop young talent at QB? Leftwich was mostly terrible, plus with his long wind up, it was a given he would take vicious shots and get killed. LJ may have been considered "young talent to develop and 1st and 2nd years, but now he is just a known ****** QB who is not getting any better. Here are QBs that at least have a _chance_ at developing into good QBs some day. We NEVER have anyone on the roster who even offers HOPE of developing. And not only is it great to have a QB who COULD be good some day, it also gives teams huge trade values for high picks if they choose to go that direction and then pick up another prospect to do the same thing.

Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg, Ryan Mallett, Chase Daniel, Matt Moore, Chad Henne (yes, he is better than Jones), Colt McCoy, Mike Glennon, Cardale Jones (Yes raw but with upside), Dak Prescott (10x better than LJ and he's a rookie), Kellen Clemens, A.J. McCarron, Luke McCown, Drew Stanton, Derek Anderson (not young, but a lot better than LJ), Jimmy Garoppolo.

I don't know if you heard, but word was out for posters to try not to be dicks to each other.

Sorry, I don't buy this. Dak Prescott is making, what?
