Zach Mettenberger

At least we could keep it close with a shot at the W by putting the ball in the hands of our best available playmaker. Control the clock by pounding them with the run ( our best defensive strategy) get a timely turnover and a key defensive stop and pull out the 21-17 victory!

Need a healthy DWill for this plan and maybe even bring up Karlos Williams.

Here's the thing about Mettenberger:

1) He's the ONLY decent QB that has come from a Les Miles coached team. When he was at LSU, he was actually very, very good. Has an absolute cannon for an arm and can make all the throws you need him to make.
2) He was drafted by the dysfunctional Tennessee Titans and set up to fail. Kind of like being drafted by Cleveland, or Indy (now).
3) We KNOW that Landry Jones can't do the job.

I'm not sure you jump from running the scout team to starting in a single week, but I don't think I'd give Landry 100% of the plays with the first team either. If I were Tomlin, I'd have to give Mettenberger a solid look with the 1s just to see if he has some chemistry.

The tried and true way to make Landry look good is by giving Mike Vick 1.5 starts immediately beforehand and we've missed that window.

Lol wildcat was what I was thinking too.. Essentially play Le'Veon at QB the entire game..

Brown used to be a QB at one time and has thrown a couple passes in he NFL too. Let's get the ball and keep the ball in both Brown's and Bell's hands all game long. Let's just go straight schoolyard football on their *****.

I think they stick with Landry no matter how bad he stinks it up. I just don't see them putting in Mettenberg at any time unless Landry gets hurt.

Landry's advice, 'Don't panic'

When Ben Roethlisberger was ruled out for this Sunday's game against the New England Patriots after having successful outpatient arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the blood pressure of Steelers Nation soared as panic set in. It's a typical reaction any time you lose your starting quarterback, especially one with Roethlisberger's talent.

Jones: 'I have to be cautiously aggressive'
Share:
But Landry Jones had some words of wisdom for his teammates during a team meeting on Wednesday, and they are words that everyone should heed.

"As he told us this morning, don't panic," said Arthur Moats.

Jones stood up in the meeting and simply delivered those two words. Nothing else needed to be said.

"You never know when he is going to embrace us and throw out those types of words," said Moats. "It was good to hear from him.

"We are extremely confident. We're not worried about who you put out there. We understand the next man motto doesn't matter at any position. As you have seen this year, we have had those guys come in and have success. It's no different with Landry. We are anticipating him coming in there and playing a great game. He has put his work in, studied and it's his time to shine."

Jones said that he is excited about the opportunity that is ahead of him this week, and the key for him is to go out there and don't panic, just stay loose and play.

"I think if you're a backup in these types of situations, you can almost try to be too perfect and too careful," said Jones. "One time Coach (Mike) Tomlin said something along the lines of, 'Gun fighters are going to get shot.' For me, I have to go out there and cut it loose and play like that rather than trying to be too careful. Try to just go out there and take every check down that I can. Obviously, you have to play smart. But, you have to take what the defense gives you and try to be cautiously aggressive."

Last year Jones, who is in his fourth season, saw his first NFL action filling in when a combination of injuries to Roethlisberger and Michael Vick plagued the team. He made his debut against Arizona, coming in during the game when Vick went down, and completed eight of 12 passes for 168 yards with two touchdowns. Jones played in seven games last season, starting two, and finished the year with 32 completions for 513 yards and three touchdowns.

"You can just draw from the experience from last year," said Jones. "Learn from things you did well, learn from things you didn't do so well and just draw from the experience."

Jones knows this week will be a whole new challenge, going against a Patriots team that is loaded with weapons, including Dont'a Hightower, who had 13 tackles, 1½ sacks, which included a safety, and two quarterback hits last week against Cincinnati that resulted in him winning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

"They're a great, disciplined group," said Jones. "That's kind of how (Bill) Belichick coaches them. He's going to have guys who are going to go out there and do what they're asked to do. We have a big challenge in front of us.

"They're going to do what they do, but for each team there are little tweaks here and there. I'm sure they'll have something different for us on Sunday and we'll just have to get into the flow of the game."

I think he is wrong. He should mostly be taking safe throws.

Mettenberger does not know the offense..he only runs the scout team in practice. He runs our opponents offense in practice. He is nowhere ready to replace Landry Jones

Landry Jones is nowhere ready to replace Landry Jones!

Landry Jones is nowhere ready to replace Landry Jones!

Is what it is. Until Mettenberger has more then a week worth of snaps in the offense Landry is the better option

I would play a 2 back offense with Brown and Bell in the backfield, 2TE's and Coates on the edge. Dink and dunk the **** out of them

bubble wrap Ben and put him in Hines' hyperbaric chamber for a week and half so he can practice before the Baltimore game. Feed him via IV and let him **** all over the Rats when he comes back.

People id feel more confident quarterbacking than Laundry this weekend:

1. Mettenberger
2. Antionio Brown... to himself
3. a 100 year old charlie Batch
4. Random UFA signed off the street
5. A one legged Ben
6. Retired Peyton Manning with half an arm.
7. The Ghost of Antwaan Randle El.
8. A 200 year old Brett Favre

People im kind of sure Laundry can outplay
1. A Hobo from the underpass on 2nd Avenue
2. a 100 year old bubby Brister
3. Kordell Stewart in Pocket Passer mode
4. Michael vick
5. jimbo the football chucking chimp (not 100% certain on this one)
6. Me...lol

Since everyone likes to nit-pick Steelers wins, let's look at the wins by HoFer Dak Prescott:

They've beaten 2 teams with winning records, 2 that are 1-5 and 1 that is 2-4. (lost to 3-3 giants). The Cowboys have held all but one opponent (Redskins) to less than 23 points. Cowboys have scored 24 or more in all but one game.

Redskins: 4-2, have only held 1 opponent under 20 points (38,27,27,20,10,20) 18th in ppg
Bears: 1-5, have only held 2 teams under 23 points (23,29,31,14,29,17) 19th in ppg
49ers: 1-5 have held 1 team under 24 (0,46,37,24,33,45) 31st in ppg
CIN: 2-4 have held 1 team under 22 (22,24,29,7,28,35) 30th in ppg
GB: 3-2 have held 2 teams under 23 (22,24,29*,7,28,35) 16th in ppg

So, under the SN microscope, rather than giving Dak some credit, Dak has been fortunate to face teams that can't stop other teams from scoring...amiright? you might go further and say that he has faced one team (the giants) in the top half of the league in ppg allowed by the Defense and he lost that game...amiright?

Jones needs to look at the game, Bill-I-cheat will take the running game away and it will be up to Jones accuracy to move the ball. Hope Tomlin sees the same thing.

Ryan Mallet beat the Steelers (in a must-win game for them) after being with the Ravens for less than two weeks. I know what Jones brings to the field and I would be fully prepared to take a risk with Mettenberger.

Just pick a name out of the hat from the make a wish foundation and plop the name out on the field for this one, unless that name is Landry Jones

I'd kill to trade for Ryan Fitzpatrick. That was the talk on local radio today. Wouldn't be any help for this week, but could play as soon as the Baltimore game.

Tells team not to panic and then shows them why later in the day

After calming team in morning, Landry Jones flawless at practice.

PITTSBURGH -- Mike Tomlin brought his Pittsburgh Steelers into the meeting room Wednesday morning, told them Landry Jones was replacing Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback and asked Jones if he had anything to say to the team.
"Yeah," Jones said from his seat. "Don't panic."

"As smooth as Landry could say it," linebacker Arthur Moats said with a laugh.
Did it calm the nerves?
"Absolutely, man. Anytime THE Landry Jones graces us with his verbal leadership, we always appreciate that," Moats said. "In all seriousness, we're extremely confident. We're not worried about who you put out there. We understand the Next Man Up motto. Doesn't matter, any position, as you've seen this year, we've had those guys come in and have success. It's no different with Landry. We're anticipating him coming in there and playing a great game. He put his work in, studied. It's his time to shine."
Jones has had his ups and down since the Steelers drafted him in the fourth round in 2013 following a record-breaking career at Oklahoma. His downs include:
* A passer rating in four preseasons of 68.4, and while often playing with starters his ratings the last two preseasons were 71.4 and 76.5.
* He lost his first regular-season start last year in Kansas City.
* His "win" as a starter occurred against Cleveland after he left in the first quarter with an injury.
* Thrust into last season's playoff game at Cincinnati with a 15-7 fourth-quarter lead, Jones was sacked, intercepted and left the game trailing 16-15 before the injured and re-inserted Roethlisberger pulled out the win.
Jones has had his moments last year, though. He replaced Michael Vick last season against Arizona and turned a 10-6 third-quarter deficit into a 25-13 win with a pair of touchdown passes. His 149.3 passer rating was the second-highest passer rating ever for a QB making his NFL debut.
Jones also pulled out a last-second 38-35 win over Oakland after replacing an injured Roethlisberger and driving the Steelers 79 yards for a short field goal.
Does he have a whisper of a chance against Tom Brady and the 5-1 New England Patriots?
"I’m anxious. I’m excited. It’s going to be a great week," said Jones. "This is a huge game for my career and the direction I want to go. I’m just excited for the opportunity and excited to get out there and actually get in there and play."
According to teammates, Jones directed the team flawlessly Wednesday afternoon at practice.
"Landry looked good today. He looked real good," said Le'Veon Bell. "He's a lot more comfortable than he was last year, just around the guys. We all hang out outside of football. Him demanding things in the huddle and things like that, he gets more of the respect. That's the biggest thing you want from your quarterback, and we saw a lot of that today."
"I think he did a great job going out there commanding the offense, getting the guys back to the huddle fast, getting the guys lined up fast," said center Maurkice Pouncey. "He did a good job, man, calling out audibles, checking plays. It was good. We did two-minute, too, and he looked really good.
"Good signs for us, right?"
Just don't panic.

"Don't panic" - I'll bet George Armstrong Custer said the same thing on June 24, 1876.

Landry will not lose this game. The defense will lose this game.

Landry will not lose this game. The defense will lose this game.

Thank you Ron and know I am NOT a laundry jones fan either. The key to winning this game will fall on the "D". I hope Butler comes up with something innovative...................................like maybe turn overs or something of that nature......Throw in a 3-8 sacks.!!! (by uncle Jarvis)

Saluted the nation

I'm fine with our backup QB quoting Douglas Adams. Perhaps he'll wrap his terrible towel over his face, so he can avoid getting sacked by the Bugblatter beast of traal:

Yep cause the circumstances were exactly the same. Mallet replaced Jimmy Clausen who the ravens picked up off waivers two weeks before that. Landry sucks but has been in the system for 4 years and has worked with the starting offense.
