Mock Draft 1.0. Senior bowl week.

Much will change after the combine and pro days are finished. In some cases, players will be downgraded due to the character. Having said that, here's my first full mock draft. I'll be using Draft Tek as a rule for where players go, picking only players left on the board before we pick in each round.

http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Mock-Draft-Round1.asp

Round 1 ) CB E. Apple. Finally a DB with ability and size. Steelers seem to like OSU players, and with Apple, there is a lot to like.

Round 2 ) OLB N. Spence. Too much value, worth the risk in round two.
Big time pass rushing / edge skills.

Round 3 ) C or G A. Blythe. Foster likely leaving, depth an issue. I liked what I saw at the senior bowl so far. Looks like a plug and play type.

Round 4 ) DL V. Butler - He won't be here. Draft Tek needs to update their rankings. Butler is a 1st or 2nd round man!

Round 5-6, blown due to bad GM moves :(

Round 7 ) BPA at Saftey

Round 7 ) Projected comp pick. BPA at Punter

I think we get a late pick because we traded our other punter to the Giants. If we trade Susisham, then there is another late rounder. I like you mock a lot and would love an OLB in rd 2, like the Georgia kid or Spence. I think we can actually sign Weddle in FA, so that clears up the SS spot. I would, however, really like to go after Bruce Irvin from Seattle to play OLB, but ART II is going to upgrade the secondary, which is also good. We need 3-4 DE help...wonder if re-signing Ziggy to a cheap deal would be a nice idea.

Based solely off their mock::

1. Apple
2. Jordan Jenkins
3. Day DT, ND
4. OG
5.Gone....

Apple has all the tools. He just needs to show more consistency. Spence is a beast. I personally think he is past all that ecstasy stuff. I wouldn't mind those 2.

mocking their mock

1 Su'a Cravens SS
2 Noah Spence OLBer
3 Maurice Canady CB
4 Braxton Miller WR
7 Alex Lewis T
7B D.J. Reader DT

1. Cravens - S/LB/Troy
2. Xavien Howard - CB
3. Maurice Canady - CB
4. Chris Jones - DE
7A. Sterling Bailey - OG
7B. Dak Prescott - QB

1. Darian Thompson FS.
2. Josh Garnett G
3. Canada CB
4. Harlan Miller CB

we have 2, 7th round picks BEFORE comps are awarded.

Good news. We should get a 7th round comp pick for losing Brice McCain.

So it's three 7th round picks.

Not sure of "all the tools" till we see him run. The Big 10 is not really full of great CB's/WR's

1. S'ua Cravens, LB/S, USC
Everything I've seen has him as a LB at the next level, but I am willing to give him a chance as an in-the-box safety. The Steelers need playmakers and he fits the bill.
Other options: Adolphus Washington, DL, Ohio State; Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State; Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

2. Noah Spence, OLB, Eastern Kentucky
I'm basing this on the assumption his character checks out okay. Rough past, but if he moved on from his issues, you are getting a top-15 player at a position of need.
Other Options: Josh Garnett, G, Stanford; Tyler Boyd, WR, Pitt; Kenny Clark, DL, UCLA

3. Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia
Big, physical cornerback who has performed well at Senior Bowl practices.
Other Options: Nick Vannett, TE, Ohio State; Christian Hackenberg, QB, Penn State

4. Braxton Miller, WR, Ohio State
I've seen him listed anywhere from a late-round pick to an end-of-first pick. Miller is one of the top athletes in the draft and a guy who can do a lot of things for the offense once he gains more experience.
Other Options: Cole Toner, OT, Harvard

1. Trade back to pick up a second #2 and additional #4. None of the players that will seem to be there are worth it.

2a. CB Kendall Fuller. Obvious need, even if the team has a mental disorder about picking CBs high.

2b. Darian Thompson, S, Boise State. Will Allen is 34 and not all that great to begin with. Quit messing around and fix the dang secondary. That **** they trotted out there last year was inferior, wink link of team.

3. Deion Jones, OLB, LSU. Seems a little small. (6-1, 228) but if he could add 10 lbs, he could shore up our OLB, where Jarvis Jones has been an absolute bust.

4a. RB Tre Madden. With Bell being oft-injured, and D Will turning 34, we need some depth at RB.

4b. Kyle Murphy, OT, Stanford. Who knows what we will do with Beachum, but if he leaves, we are desperately thin at OT. He would provide some depth.

The rest of draft: DL, OG, DB

I like the trade down idea, but Jones to me is a 4-3 OLB, not a 3-4 OLB. He's too small and will be a liability vs. the run. Also the name Jones seems jinxed for the Steelers dating back to Aaron!

1. Jeremy Cash SS - Knowing that none of the top safeties fall to 2.25, I reach on one here in the 1st since no sure thing fell in this mock. Would love to trade back and still grab one mid 2nd and pick up extra picks.
2. Noah Spence OLB - 1st round potential
3. Rashard Robinson CB - 6'3", finally a tall corner
4. Sheldon Rankins DE/DT - 6'2" 303lbs, need some Dline depth and he has size
7a. Daryl Worley CB - double up on a position of need
7b. Dak Prescott QB - Landry needs some competition. Dak will either be the second coming of Russell Wilson or Tee Martin, either way, the last pick in the draft isn't much of a gamble.

As a big Ohio State fan, I don't like Apple's game at all. Assuming we stay put (and of course not counting free agency) , I go:

1. S Cravens
2. OLB Noah Spence
3. QB Cardale Jones
4. WR Braxton Miller

I know that's 3 (ex) Buckeyes, but I think all three help us out big time. Spence provides the pass rush we sorely need, we HAVE to get a legit backup QB who can take over for Ben in a few years (I think we some seasoning, it would be a very smooth transition to Cardale), and Miller gives us a great offensive threat who can also finally shore up our kick return position.

Spence will def not make it to round 2

He might. Character reports come out later. And he still has a combine, interviews and pro days to impress.

Why don't you like Apple? Did you think the pass rush made his job easier? I'd love to hear why.

I think Jones just isn't a QB, and should have been pulled a little eariler by Urban Meyer

Bosa is projected by some to go #1 overall. Why was his performance a bit less than it was a year before? OSU is so loaded its not like he was double teamed all day.

I do like Miller a lot. He looked like the best WR at the senior bowl at times. I wonder if he can return kicks?

Apple, to me, just isn't a good man-to-man cover guy. I think we'll have the same frustrations with him as we do Blake. Taking him in the 4th or 5th is fine, but as a first rounder, I hate it. I think Cardale needs a couple years of maturing, but he has the tools to be a dynamic QB. Honestly, his style of play reminds me of Ben, which is why I'd love to have him. On Bosa, he's good, but I think he's REALLY overrated. He flashes dominance at times, then completely disappears for a whole game.

Here's the thing, without a trade up, we are not getting top CB. Apple is only 20, but he has nice upside.

In 28 games played, Apple has 4 interceptions, 17 passes defended, 86 tackles ( 7.5 for losses ) 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. He sounds like a physical corner that can make plays with good size at 6'1" 200 pounds.

Blake is yesterday's toast. Blake can't tackle or cover, and has size limitaitons. He's done as a starter.

Corners to me are the hardest position to evaluate because the scheme they play in doesn't give the NFL the right type of looks needed to evaluate the player vs. NFL QB like passes.

From your link...
"WEAKNESSES: Too hands-on downfield and lacks savvy at the top of routes. Obvious target for penalties due to undisciplined hand placement, grabbing too much cloth. Experienced in press coverage at the line of scrimmage, but needs to improve his balance and jam technique. Tends to open his hips too early and struggles to recognize routes from bail position, creating too much of a cushion and allowing too many comeback completions."

The weaknesses sound like it could be written for Blake. He's good at creating a cushion so maybe that means he will be a Steeler after all?

Cash stinks in coverage, no way is he a 1st rounder. Spence will also not make it out od round 1.

Cravens and Spence would give you the chance to add two tremendous playmakers to the defense. Spence is a legit top-15 talent and think he'll go high as long as his character checks out. Then again, he could go the way of Randy Gregory. If I'm taking a QB, I go with Hackenberg in the third over Jones.
