Mock draft threads

DD will remains a Steeler for a while. I think he likes it here. Foster will get a better offer and leave.
So you are saying we need a LG?

A trade down in round one picking late is only done once say every two years ( By just one team ) when there's a QB another team wants! Do any QB's this year rate as a late first round pick? Not likely, so the trading up aciton starts in round two for the QB's.
I just showed you 4 trades back into the 20's in 2 years. Yes two were QB's but it is very early in the evaluation process. Hackenberg, Lynch and Cook all could be in the late first round mix. And look at who's behind us. Arizona(29th) has 36 year old Carson Palmer at the helm. Not saying they would but if Arians is smart he will look for a replacement soon. What if Cleveland(32nd) doesn't go QB with their first? How about Dallas(34th) with Romo? Or Chargers(35th) with Rivers? Or how about Chip Kelley in San Fran(37th) and Kap looking like the odd man out.

I'm not saying they WILL. As you can see in my mock I don't trade down but I do say this will be entertaining offers.
No head measurements needed Cravens is 6'1". Troy was 5'10", and like Fletch a bit taller with the hair :) I'll judge Cravens as a Saftey first.

Cravens does play in the box a lot and will need to be tested via combine, pro day, and individual workouts to see if he has the agility to cover. But I don't know why you would say at this point he can't? He did it in College so until he proves he can't I will reserve my final opinion. But he at a second round pick would be a very good value.

Almost every assessment I've read on Eli Apple states that the kid is "grabsy" with his hands - I know he's a big DB, but, that's a hard habit to break at DB and will probably result in much gnashing of teeth and moaning (here)...

Last year I really felt we should have picked Marcus Peters in the first round or the second if he was there. Considering his performance, this year, I don't think that was a bad option. I don't get that same feeling when watching the tape on Apple. Heck, even the highly-touted Hargraves III, from Florida, he looked like poo poo as the collegiate season progressed...

If we keep the 25th pick - my target is SS.

"With the 25th pick in the 2016 Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select 'Su'a Cravens, SS, USC'" - <SteelerNation rejoices>

you can get a ss anywhere in rds 2-3. I think we will look at Weddle.

Corners are tough to evaluate, simply because NFL QB's and WR's are much better than college ones.

Apple is an upside pick. He's young with tools, however, he is a playmaker. I'll take a taller corner with upside and better workout #'s over a 5'9 corner with superior production in round one or two.

Do you really think a rookie corner with "upside" will make more difference next year than a FA vet and a big active interior D-lineman? And with all your suggested changes you might want to read the Cowher article where he said he thinks this team is close and what he learned is that when you are close don't tinker too much.

How about Jenoris Jenkins in FA? I would offer 7 mil/yr. He can start opposite Gay. You could still draft a cb that would eventually supplant Gay, maybe Eli Apple.

I personally don't see the Steelers making much if any splash in free agency. I see them re-signing Golden for safety, Gay at CB and yes... Blake. I think they drop Allen like a bad habit or he takes a HUGE pay cut for 2016. If he drops his pay to 1 million I would see the Steelers keeping him and seeing if he can earn his 2017-2018 pay of 4.3 million. But other than that he's gone. I unfortunately think Cam Thomas comes back. He should be cheap and with McLendon leaving the Steelers will want to keep Thomas so they don't have to fill two holes via the draft.

The Seattle DB's are very grabsy and they don't get called for ****.

I think we keep McClendon and Gay, Foster leaves, depending on $$$

I admit im not a college football guy, but i cant believe no one's talking about this kid for safety.

Miles Killebrew -Safety

http://www.draftcountdown.com/player/miles-killebrew/

6-3, 240 lbs, runs a 4.45, hits like a truck, doesnt miss any tackles, sheds blocks like they're not even there.. has pretty impressive stats 100+ tackles the last couple years as a safety, 7 PBU's a year, good hands.. I dont know much about his coverage skills but he looks like a 1st or 2nd round talent to me, would be a great sleeper pick. Maybe even put him at ILB and let Timmons walk.

Crazy trade down Mock.

Steelers trade with Arizona (1st 29th), (4th 125th) and (5th 155th) Value chart wise 720 for 640, 47, and 29 for 716 total.

Steelers trade (1st 29th) and (7th 197th) with Dallas (2nd 34th) and (4th 98th).

2nd(34)- Kendall Fuller CB VT
Comes from a long line of gifted athletes and football players. He to me is the most NFL ready CB in the draft if you look at his Junior and Sophomore tape he is very technically sound, has speed, feet, good hips, soft hands, and good size. Probably not the next Deion Sanders but a guy you plug in for a decade at CB.

2nd(58)- Nick Martin OL Notre Dame
With Foster all but likely gone and Pouncey always injured and DeCastro a 2017 free agent the Steelers fill a hole and ad depth to their interior. Martin might be the safest pick in the draft. He again comes from some NFL stock and is technically sound as they come. He should come in and start day one at LG.

3rd(89)- Nick Vannett TE Ohio State
Vannett in my opinion is the most well rounded TE in the draft. Yes, Jesse James looked very good and we still have Miller but I feel Miller only has one year left so we can bring James up as the #2 TE and in 2017 have Vannett and James in at TE. Imagine in the red zone having Bryant (6-4) out wide with James (6-7) and Vannett (6-6) on each end of the line. That's a lot of height for a defense to match up on and if they play back have Bell walk into the end zone.

4th(98)- Miles Killebrew SS Southern Utah
This is risk vs reward. Killebrew dominated his small conference but level on competition is a little hard to gauge. Watching him he hits like a truck and seems to play well in coverage. I think he might be a little stiff but even if he can't shut Gronk down he can at least knock him on his ***.

4th(120)- Javon Hargrave DT South Carolina State
Again a small school kid with a ton of upside. Hargrave dominated and was put on the map as a junior with a 5 sack game. Senior season facing double teams every snap he still had 22 TFL, 13.5 sacks, and 11 QB hurries. He moves well, is strong, has some natural pass rush skills. I feel we could put McCullers in on running downs and Hargrave in on passing downs to keep our line fresh and maximize each players talent

4th(125)- Cyrus Jones CB Alabama
Jones is more of an athlete at this point but looked good at the senior bowl and also is an elite return man having 4 punt returns for TD's this year. He's still growing into his position but with Fuller and if we re-sign Gay and Golson comes back the most we'd need him to be is a dime back or reserve. But this would get Brown off the field on punt returns and help keep him fresh and injury free.

5th(155)- Victor Ochi OLB Stoney Brook
Watched him at the east shrine game and he was quick off the edge and really proved he can get after the QB. He might need some refinement on run defense and might be a one trick pony right now but he gets off the edge and can turn the corner. Should give JJ a run for his money as a rookie for playing time.

7th(214)- Clay DeBord OT EWU
DeBord has quick feet, he's a hard worker, and fits the Munchak mold. He is a likely project but I feel could easily become our swing tackle in 2016.

btw I used CBS for prospect ranking.

An idea. Sign Jenoris Jenkins.
1. Spence
2. ss or corner
3. ss or G
4. DL

Most mocks I've seen have Spence going in the top 10 picks, so how is he a realistic pick for the Steelers?

do you bank on what the mocks are saying? or are they guessing?

it is realistic that he could drop due to

Spence displayed first-round talent at Ohio State, but was banned by the Big Ten for repeated failed drug tests and ended up at Eastern Kentucky in 2015.

You've confirmed another reason he won't be a Steeler. Steelers don't pick players with confirmed drug test failures.

What you smokin'?

Mock 2.0, post super bowl

1 ) DL Billings. An impact NT, who can make plays vs the run or pass. Good in the 3-4, nickel, or dime. We also need DL depth due to free agency.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/drew-kaser?id=2555151

2 ) CB William Jackon III. Allowed just 40 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed over last two year. 2015 stats: five interceptions and 23 pass breakups, leading the nation in passes defended.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/william-jackson iii?id=2555179

3 ) OLB Arron Wallace. I'm usually against ULCA defensive players. This guy has potential.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/aaron-wallace?id=2555320

4 ) OG Conner McGovern. A super strong guard with some tackle skills. He would be a steal in round four, but Guards are undervalued sometimes on draft day

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/connor-mcgovern?id=2555133

7 ) Punter Drew Kaser. Berry isn't very good. Kaser is.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/drew-kaser?id=2555151

7 ) BPA WR/ Kick Return. Need a man here. AB is too good to risk.

7 ) Comp pick. BPA S. I'll go with a raw upside type not ready to play now, but with a year or two on the PS might be something.

Spence is a top 10 pick athletically but it takes a special kinda stupid to get kicked off OSU. Randy Gregory was just as talented and half as stupid and he slipped to the second. I feel teams will probe Spence a lot just to get him back on their board but only the Ravens, Bengals, and Cowboys will have him very high on their board.

Personally I would trade out of the first (if we can) and get back some of those mid round picks. If we dropped to the mid second and Spence was on the board I'd have to take him just on pure talent (unless he doesn't pass the psychological testing the team did). He'd be a risk even if he says all the right things but between him and Dupree we'd have a Lloyd/Greene type pass rush again.

Mock draft 2.0, post combine

1 ) CB William Jackson. It's an open secret our DB's are a mix of short, slow and unproven. If Gay leaves in free agency, the unit goes from very bad to perhaps the worst since the AFL / NFL merger. Jackson is a flat out player maker type, with some height and great speed ( 4.39 unofficial time ) as I type.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/william-jackson-iii-1.html

2 ) NT/DT Butler. Butler killed it at the senior bowl. He adds value as a playmaking DT vs the run or pass. A hard to block dispute type who can make plays in the backfield and has better range than your traditional NT. With the amount of nickel and dime the Stellers play., Butler will be playing a lot once he learns the system.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/vernon-butler-1.html

3 ) S Houston-Carson. A former corner, Carson combines good length and quick change of direction ability. Very productive. The level of competition is a question mark, but Tomlin might overlook that as he's a William and Mary guy.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/deandre-houston-carson?id=2555381

4 ) G Graham Glasgow. Guard have great value later in the draft. Glasgow can play Center or guard equally well. We need a versatile player for the interior. If Foster leaves, Glasgow can find himself starting sometimes in 2016.

Picks 5 & 6 already spent :(

7 ) QB Driskel. A highly rated prospect, Driskel had some injury issues a confidence issues at Florida. He transferred to Lousiana Tech and had a very good season. Driskel needs good coaching, but with some patience, you could have something, He had a very good combine, and is likely gone by round seven, but hey this is my mock so I'm taking the liberty of getting lucky late. Landry Jones is not a short term or long term answer for back up.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/jeff-driskel-1.html

7 ) P. Hacket. Two-time Ray -guy award winner. He forces a lot of fair catches, can kick for distance, and can drop 'em inside the 20. An upgrade over Berry.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/tom-hackett-1.html

7 ) * Projected comp pick KR/PR Reaves.

The best in the nation at returning kicks. Brown is too valuable to risk.

With so few picks, there is no way I take a QB, P or K with any pick. Totally wasted picks in my mind.

Why is a better back up QB with big upside a wasted pick? Did you not see Jones and Vick play. I'm okay with a punter in round seven. Berry faded and rates poorly. We do not need to draft a kicker at all. Boswell rocks! I wish we found him before spending a 6th on Scobee.

Mock 3.0, post signing Gay, Green and Foster

With 2 key free agents returned and one added, the Steelers can enter the draft with better flexibility.

1 ) Jackson III I love his coverage skills, speed and playmaking ability. A better starter is needed. Cornerback even with Gay re-signed is still a huge need

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1984302/william-jackson-iii

2 ) OLB/DL Nassib. Nassib is a late bloomer type, with amazing production and an impressive week at the senior bowl. He could play OLB, and offer a better run defense, and pass rushing ability, and kick to DL in our nickel and dime defense. A 9 technique type of pass rusher with smooth exploration and moves. A high effort player.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1983812/carl-nassib

3 ) Houston -Carson. Safety is needed. A good upside candidate. His hands, height and ball skills are all pluses. His level of competition is suspect, though.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1825507/deandre-houston-carson

4 ) QB Hogan. A smart passer with good overall skills. When Ben went down, it was clear we needed a better backup Quarterback.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1851143/kevin-hogan

We have three round 7 picks. BPA at DL, OL, and P
