End of the year review on Jarvis Jones.

Just to keep a little perceptive on Jones. Mingo, who was a top 10 olb pick the same year- 24 t-0 sacks last yr. Gregory, who many here wanted last year-11t-0 sacks last year.

Is this were I bring up that Tyler Eifert had 13 TDs last year?

I think we have to evaluate him according to the present, not based on his draft position, no matter how much we moan and kick the dog we can't change that.
Would you keep him for a low contract? Hell yes, the guy can make some plays is decent against the run and if he could be kept cheap why not?

While Jones may not ever be anything more than a backup, not exercising his option year seems like a bad idea to me. If for no other reason than he's comfortable in the defense at this point and made some plays. He didn't make plays like you would hope from a 1st round pick, but he made plays. If he has another lackluster year like this year's, then cut him after next year and it only costs the Steelers what's left of the signing bonus (which he gets regardless). Exercise the option, if he produces then they have a slight problem, is he the one year wonder or the 3 year average Joe? If he doesn't produce, cut him and save the 5th year salary about 8 million dollars.

I don't' really see how the Steelers can avoid taking another OLB this year (maybe not in the first, but at some point in the draft), JH may or may not come back and Jones has a lot to prove or not. The Steelers still need this position to be solidified and it isn't.

Yea, I know but it still make me angry. I'm not sure who else wanted Eifert but my head nearly exploded when we drafted Jones with him sitting there.

Would I keep him? Yes. The caveat is that the price would have to be low. The Giants inked Jonathan Casillas 3 years 8mil with close to 3mil guaranteed. I don't think Jarvis is that good so that would be the absolute upper limit for me.

yeah I wanted Eifert too or Rhodes, I think my reaction on twitter when the Steelers picked JJ was just six letters "oh ****"

To me the only real "mistake" in drafting Jones was we picked the best OLB available instead of the best player. That was because of our situation both with the people we had and our cap space. We need to be careful we don't do the same thing at CB this year because another young not quite ready CB isn't going to help that much. I'd rather use free agency on a solid vet and put my hopes on some younger ones developing. From what I've seen so far the talent seems to be DL and linebacker who can move to SS. But lots of time to go yet.

Worst first round pick since Jemain Stephens. It would be addition by subtraction to release him.

I would say Ziggy Hood was probably worse and had less of an impact. I've always been a "wait and see after 3 years guy" and Jones was been wildly mediocre for the most part. I think they will probably pick up his one year option because there isn't anyone else ready to take over and Harrison is rounding the last bend (unless they move Moats or Dupree over to that side), but after that they will let him walk unless he steps it up several notches.

I don't agree, they were in love with JJ since the beginning, they were were expecting him to go earlier and I'd bet that if the Steelers were picking higher they still would have gotten him

That is probably true Litos, but that doesn't mean Uncle jarvis was best player available at the time of the pick.

Salute the nation

Jarvis improved this year. I was almost busting him out. And although he hasn't been were he needs to be compared to his draft status. He had some moments.

I think you give him that year and if he improves a little more maybe you keep him. If not show him the door.

Thing is you can pay him on his second contract his worth, so if the money is right and he again improves. I would have no problem keeping him.

Doubt he will ever be a star but he could be serviceable.

We'll see..

One thing to look at. How long did it take Harrison to catch on and start? Jones may never develop. Then again, He may be on the same learning curve as Harrison. Not good for a first round pick, but as Tomlin likes to say it is what it is.

I think I had him for 6 sacks during the season. Boy he fell short of my expectations

Harrison didn't get the opportunity to play right away like Jones did, being an UFA it took him awhile to crack the line up, he was behind Porter when he was drafted also. Jones has had more than enough time to show something, hell Harrison's first 7 starts he had 4 sacks, that's almost as many sacks as Jones has in his career.

Harrison wasn't ready to play when he came into the league. JJ probably wasn't either. Then he had his wrist injury. Well hopefully he takes a nice big step forward next season. I doubt it but will hold out hope anyways.

I really think jones would be better inside Burfuk style. A stay at home run stuffer. The edge pass rusher day is over. If like Von Miller they are good then you can't pay them. We need to get over it and just consentrate on just rushing the qb with the guys we got. The pressure and hits on the qb making him move his feet and throw on the run is as important as sacks. Jones can be salvaged but I think it's inside.
