I just read in the rag that shall not be mentioned that Woodley is currently our third highest cap hit...WTF ?

Woodley, still counts $8.58 million against the Steelers salary cap, even though he is with his second team since they cut him. He played just six games last season for the Oakland Raiders because of injury. After they released him this year, he then signed with the Cardinals.

So. is this like having our guys playing for both teams at the same time ? How this can happen is beyond my comprehension but at the same time it has to reflect on the Steeler mgmt team and their ongoing contract philosophy.

Does this happen a lot ?

I hope he was at least considerate and bought Tombert dinner while he is in town..

We're not still paying him. We paid him when we gave him his second contract, and the dead money is the prorated signing bonus. All his dead money and Pola's dead money is off the books this season. Want to know next year's dead money charge? $516k. That's nothing compared to the $17.88M this season.

Our cap is projecting to be pretty damn good next season.

So...first off thanks for the clarification. Just for my edification, we are not actually paying him any cash but the cash we did pay him is still "on the books" for this year and can't be spent on anyone else ? I admit to graduating 243rd in a class of 200 but isn't that the same as " still paying him" ?

Yep...realize he is not on the payroll any longer..but we did pony up big time when he was here...I would think he still has "Steeler money" in his portfolio..

And that is great news about our cap situation next season..

Speaking of high cap hits, you have to wonder what the Steelers will do with Timmons after the season. He said he wants to finish his career here, but his cap hit is insane.

restructure

LOL...ya mean like we did with Woodley ? j/k

Timmons has proven to be steady as he goes. You know what you are getting from him.

I know you were kidding but Woodley dropped off after his big pay day.

Steelers know that wouldn't be the case with restructuring Timmons.

You have two choices that or cut him, and we know cutting him with injury prone Shazier, and slightly above marginal other two ILBers isn't the answer.

As they won't want to turn their attention to ILBer in the draft

with questions at SS,NT,OLBer, and CB............

Timmons is solid in our defense, but imo was nowhere near the impact Woodley was giving us in his prime. I think Woodley's hamstring really sent his career downhill. Most players can come back from it. Wood was just to lazy to rehab into better shape. Idk how this will affect the front office's judgement in contract negotiations with current players

it won't and it shouldn't on most players

but when it comes time to reup Shazier you have to factor in how much he is off the field due to injury

You mean like they did with Pouncey? I see the new highest paid ILBer will be on our roster in a few years then. :)

We paid him a HUGE signing bonus. In the NFL, you can spread out the signing bonus over the length of the contract. So say a 24M Signing bonus was given to a player. Instead of having all of the bonus count against the cap when a player signs, the bonus is spread out over the course of the contract. A 2yr contract would split it to counting 12M per year for 2 years. 3year would be 8M and 4 year would be 6M per year. If you get rid if the player before the contract ends, your team's cap still has to count against the prorated portion left on the contract. Woodley had 2 years left and we were on the hook for 8M of prorated signing bonus for last year and this year.

Salaries always count immediately against the cap, so cutting Woodley saved us from paying his salary last year and this year.

Hope this helps!
