Steelers sign Chris Boswell; release Scobee

All I have to say about the botched kicking situation by Tomlin is that's its been a very expensive one indeed. Not only did this guy miss two in NE that may have changed the outcome of that game but the two against the Rats that definitely changed the outcome. Now factor into that Scobee costs this team a 6'th round pick in 2016. More evidence of poor management when we could have brought in Henry for no draft pick and he couldn't have been any worse than Scobee who had a 76% accuracy from 40 -49 yards last year. No wonder Jags were trying out new kickers since this one flat out wasn't getting it done any more. But I suppose Tomlin liked his ******* pedigree.

He had a gut feeling about Scooby. ;)

Did you say or feel this way before the trade?

Welcome to the team Chris Boswell. Is it too soon to call you "the Boz"? Is it?

Why waste a draft pick on Scobee when there were similar kickers available for free, typical Tombert who have managed this team into mediocrity.

They probably knew Scobee was going to be terrible but just decided to trade for him anyhow.. or did they trade for him because his career numbers say he is a good kicker?

Think logically.

I thought Scobee was a great pickup, but he has the yips and while if we were scoring more TDs than fg you could let him work that out, we cant afford it with the Vick O on the field... I hope we don't miss his kickoffs though... we may want to keep his number handy if this guy cannot kick off... id rather have 2 kickers than a kick returner who returns one or two a game for mediocre yardage

Punting?

Scobee just made 2.5 million dollars to be horrible?

I can understand the punt option but I think the psychology behind it was 1) Scobee was mentally ****** from his two previous misses so a third attempt was NOT in the cards 2) Tomlin wanted to be aggressive and play to WIN and NOT TO LOSE. Baltimore was stacking the box and im not sure running between the tackles would've netted a sure first down, hence the call to have Vick roll out and read on the one play and then the pass call to Brown (our best WR) on the other. Had we ran Bell up the middle and it gotten stuffed we would've second guessed wondering why we didn't look for Brown. We needed TWO yard.....just TWO. Everybody in this forum believes this team can get TWO yards when it needs. Baltimore felt it could and tried it twice as well ...and lost the gamble.

The difference in the game wasn't coaching no matter how you break it down...the difference in THIS GAME was Tucker and Scobee. Cant spin it any other way

This is my thing about kickers. There's hundreds of them still out there and I would never sign one for more than the league minimum. Every year I'd bring a half dozen in and have them battle it out and make them kick 50 yarders against our special teams unit with our kicking unit and whoever does the best wins. Done.

Sort of off topic but it would be interesting to ask Suisham after his return if kicking at the formerly open end is any different after they closed it in. I'd guess it would be easier with some of the wind deflected but who knows. I'm sure the field plays a big part in it as well. I wonder is Scooby was used to kicking FGs on real grass or artificial turf. I only saw a handful of his field goal attempts but they all looked pretty shaky, even the ones that were good. Jacksonville has to be laughing their way to the bank on this deal.

OK can we release Tomlin next? That would make it a hell of good day.
Outright release or trade? If the latter what would you trade him for? :)

Did he tear it making a tackle or was it a fluke injury?

As I recall he was running to make a tackle but he hurt his knee before he got to the ball carrier. But I could be wrong.

It was coaching PERIOD. No doubt about it. You don't lose a game by putting it in the hands of a QB who's had TWO DAYS to practice with the 1st offense. It makes no sense and it's 100% on Tomlin because he's the HC and checked off on those stupid plays. The kicker had already missed BOTH FGs and you were still leading in the game with around a minute left. He had two good options. He could have punted and made them go much further for the FG OR he could have ran the best back in the NFL and got the first. He decided to do neither. He ran a 35 year old QB on a sweep when he wasn't in football shape. Probably the dumbest thing you could do in that situation.

So the difference in the game is that the Steelers HC made boneheaded moves and it cost them a win.

Nice work Tombert. Great talent evaluator.

I feel a little bad for Scobee. Here you got a guy who was kicking in Jacksonville, where nobody gives a ****. They could give a **** less about that football team. He comes here, where fans will discuss and dissect a play in a game in which they win for days, let alone when they lose. Poor guy wasn't ready for it.

Yea, you can't argue with that. At the very least, if he was hell bent on running Vick, why not have Bell in the backfield and fake to him one way and go the other. Or if you are hell bent on running that play, why not just snap it to Bell in the old wildcat?

If fantasy football has taught me anything it's that kickers are interchangeable

Vick was the only one in the backfield on that play. maybe if you had Bell back there to, it would have keep the defense a little more honest. or both backs in with a wishbone set with Vick. wasn't a very good play call

His career numbers weren't bad so I get why they traded for him but I think he got like Skippy was in his last year where the mojo simply left him. Kicker's version of Steve Blass Disease.

How is it you put this on coaching period when the kicker ****** up. TWICE ? You don't get it Vader. Youre channel minded and you've missed it on this one. Coaches cut kickers when they witness what we saw with Scobee. Are those situations symptomatic of bad coaching ? Gimme a ****** break.

That 35 yr old QB picked up nice yardage on two plays earlier in the game getting the edge, but you seem to somehow mis-remember. And what makes you think hes out of shape ? (hes been in camp 2 weeks less than the others. Vick made an attempt to connect with the leagues top WR on the last 4th down attempt. Why do you find fault with that ? Had it been Coats or Spaeth he targeted, I too would question it. But when you have Balt stacking the box expecting run, theres nothing wrong with a playcall to Antonio. It didn't work but theres no guarantee that Bell between the tackles in a stacked box was gonna work. Vick did enough to salvage the win. He played within the offense and never turned it over which is what many here hoped. The defense played well enough to earn a victory. Scobee ****** this up--if he makes just one of those two kicks its ballgame. HE DIDNT DO HIS JOB.... and THATS why he's no longer on this roster. This is ON SCOBEE. Why you cant seem to process and acknowledge that im not sure

Do you EVER put responsibility on the player ? Do you.....?

Never liked the trade. I thought it was too expensive for a guy that was going to be cut anyway. I would have been just fine signing Henry and that's actually the guy I wanted who didn't kick bad for the Eagles. My point is someone should have known what this guy's accuracy was last year in Jax.

We're emptying out the kicker barrel in a hurry.
