How about Keith Butler Pressure Defense!

Most impressive to me was the play of our bookend DE's. I'm lazy to do the research, but I'd bet it's been quite a while since we had two DE's come out of a game with this type of impact:

Heyward 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble
Tuitt 10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack

Now if we could only plug the middle and shore up that run D, we'd be in business.

Hampton in his prime with those two on his sides... that would be fun to watch.
McCullers and Shazier I think will help the run D a bit. We need a legit NT though.

So now you think they need defense? I thought they didn't need a shutdown defense?

The Rams and Seachickens are in the same division. Like the Steelers and rats. They play each other twice a year and know each other well. I'm not surprised the Rams played them well... are you?

You said they need to find a defense or they won't win anything.. I'm just pointing it out that we do have a pretty solid defense.
No, I'm not surprised they played them close but I am surprised they put up 34pts on them considering Seahawks have a great defense.
Our defense isn't the best in the league by any means but they are good enough to win meaningful games in January.

I was ready a criticism of Shamarko on the depot but I don't remember seeing him or Boykin in the game one time. From the comments, I guess he sucked big time. I guess I'll have to watch it again this weekend.

They aren't winning anything in Jan. with this defense. They've played a bad Rams team and a depleted Rats team. The rats worked them with two nobody WRs and two rookie TEs. This defense is a risk-reward defense where they take chances. That won't work in the playoffs IMHO.

4 sacks, the fifth was a fumbled snap. Flaccid had a TON of time to pass most of the time and his backup WRs could not get open. Better QBs and WRs will light this scrappy secondary up. Everyone is high on Cockrell but he is a great zone corner and a terrible man cover which is why Ryan cut him. He was exposed on the TD pass and his lack of speed was obvious on the easy pick 6 when a lineman ran him down. Boykin is better

The defense did its job, and played well enough to win this game, even with a very good player - Shazier - absent.

The D sacked Flacco, forced 2 turnovers, made up for Tomlin's idiotic first 4th down decision in overtime, won the goddam game with 2 minutes to go before the ******* offense and the ******* kicker blew the win.

The defense was not the problem yesterday.

So to summarize Dicks defense sucked because it was too conservative and Butlers defense sucks because it is too aggressive? I do not know what some people want on here. Considering our players I think the D is more than holding its own. We do not have the players to just line up man vs man and win battles. In previous years all QBs looked like Montana out there. I do think we will get torched by better teams, but that is no different than previous years. Until we get at least 1 shut down CB I dont see that changing. The offense needs to step it up. They are supposed to be carrying the team, but its not happening. Without good D we would be 1-3 right now losing against the pats, rams, and ravens.

Whatever he is doing at least they seem to be getting more pressure. Gimmick or not. You can only work with what you got. They get a nose tackle and they can be a pretty stout front.
Linebacker play seems inconsistent at times. The key is for the offense to get a early lead and make the other team one dimensional. They struggle when teams hurry up and have them guessing.
Much better than many predicted. If we were getting the scoring that was predicted by our offense we would be 3-1 or 4-0.

I would rather lose taking shots at the QB, than sit back and get paper cut to death. Good job Butler!

The personality of the D has changed. It used to be safe cushions and stop the run at all costs. Now it is more like organised chaos, with some big-boy hitting out there. This D will create 1) turnovers 2) injuries / players tapping out. Joey Porter must like this. Sure it will get gouged for some big runs but that doesn't lose games like it did 20 years ago.

This D reminds me of the Saints' D, or the GBay D on the Championship teams. Sure they give up points, but they get after the QB and created turnovers.

Mostly.......still looking for his jock strap after that TD though..

Kidding.........difficult play.

You're right, that was ugly. Him and Will Allen whiffed on that. Other than that I thought he played solid.

Did you watch the game? They still play 10 yard cushions and have guys wide open all over the field. They will risk everything to get to the QB. Which is ok I guess but teams that have decent OLs and aren't missing their top 2 TEs and WRs are going to put up some points.

Do you think this year's defense is better than the defenses we've had in the past 2-3 years?

I agree that butler's scheme is the best use of the assets available. Zone blitzes are confusing the QBs and producing splash plays.
Kudos to him

That remains to be seen. What doesn't remain to be seen is that they play a soft zone with CBs 10-15 yards off the ball. That is indisputable. Hell even the announcers said it on the very first defensive play of the game. He said that's what they do. They don't want to give up the big plays so they play off the WRs.

They've been doing zone blitzes forever. This isn't something new. Hell DL mastered it and was known for it.

I think it's a little more agressive than last couple of years zone blitzes. I saw a lot of plays where only on CB was playing off man while the others where close to the line. Also saw some CB blitzes, that didn't happen much in the last few years

yeah, and cam heyward roaming around in front of the nose tackle, spence or shazier coming in from the sides.. I see more aggressiveness. That said, we got gashed on the ground vs rats.

I was impressed with Cochtrell's fumble Recovery. That was an athletic play!

Many people said we won't get 35 sacks this year. I think that number will be shattered.

Against the Pats we played a lot of times right up on the line vs. their WRs and they did cross rub routes to get wide open. I think the key is to switch it up.. Mix in some jamming play soft coverage too. Yes DL mastered it as we all know but Butler is mixing things up a little more I think, he's giving QBs an array of different looks. Flacco looked lost on some of the defensive reads during last game, it was stuff he wasn't used to seeing from Steelers the past couple seasons IMO. I think Butler has done a very nice job up to this point, it's early though.

10-15 yds??? CBs? We don't play 15yds off the ball.
