and I highlighted your first sentence and showed examples of other teams that have

Also the Steelers were :

the first team to 6 SB wins
weren't they the first team to win it all being the last playoff seed?
Big Ben was the first QB to pass for back to back 6 TD games

where I am going with this is I feel like other teams, the Steelers aren't some red headed step child that couldn't follow suit, within winning it all with just a average D.

They just need to be solid against the run and make opportunistic turnovers.

But I wasn't talking about other teams. I specifically said "YOU" aren't winning a SB. Many people use the terms "We", "US., ETC.. when talking about the Steelers. I was very aware of other teams doing it. But the Steelers or "we" or "you" have never done it.

There are always firsts. Someone has to be first. Other teams have done it but not the Steelers. The Steelers have always been a defensive team. Now they are transitioning but they still haven't won anything with a below average defense.

Also being solid against the run didn't happen last year and TOs didn't happen. Reminds me of the bungles a few years ago. Tons of TOs then when they play a good team in the playoffs they get hammered because the TOs aren't there. If they are an average defense they won't make the playoffs this year unless a lot of good teams they play have massive injuries to star players.

I disagree. They played good teams well, it was the bad teams they had problems with playing down.

I get your side for the debate, you just seem to have this blueprint in your head based on Steeler Ds of old. This is a passing league now.

And if other teams have done it why would it be a stretch for a Steeler team to do it? I mean it is more than one or two or three or four examples.

I see you mentioned TO's. That is what I meant about having a opportunistic D, Average bend don't break TO's at the right time.

I think it isn't "other" teams injuries, I think it is the Steelers live and die by their own injuries.

After all last year we can arguably say the reason the Steelers lost that playoff game was Bell being injured and the lack of depth at the running back position.

Many felt we would have won that game otherwise.

And who knows what would have happened with a team having confidence and a playoff win under their belt.

I guess overall we will have to agree to disagree.

They didn't play any upper teams like the Seachickens, Pats***, Denver, ETC... They also got their "good" teams at home like Indy and the Saints (who destroyed the defense and won). This maybe a passing league but that doesn't mean defense doesn't count. Showing me how others teams won doesn't do anything for the Steelers. THEY haven't done it. And I don't mean just last year. They've NEVER done it without defense. I don't care if a handful of teams over the past 45 years have done it. That's like saying we don't need a franchise QB because of Trent Dilfer and Doug Williams. The Steelers tried that for almost 3 decades and it didn't work. I don't care that some teams pulled it off.

Even if the Steelers beat the rats ( who scored 30 in that game and the Steelers scored over 30 less than half of their games that year) they were have been destroyed in NE. You aren't beating NE without a defense. You aren't going to outscore them. Just like the Saints. You aren't going to outscore those type of teams.

Also I understand that most on here never consider other teams players, coaches, or injuries. That's just the way it is. Everything is simply because of the Steelers. I get it. But I don't buy it a minute. Unless Brady is injured or suspended they'll get destroyed in NE to open the season. There are other teams in the league and to think only the Steelers' injuries and issue matter is short sighted.

The Steelers may average 30 points a game but they will be wildly inconsistent from week to week in scoring as Ben is just not a Brady, Brees or Manning in week to week consistency. Just like last year their will be great games , the 2 six TD games, sandwiched between awful games , Ben has never been able to carry a defense and now with a poor defense the odds are further stacked against him.

It isn't short sighted I believe the talent level is there.

Last year that D wasn't even average.

Nobody will say the D doesn't need to improve, I just disagree with the defensive rankings.

If they got hot at the right time, who knows?

I never said the D didn't count BTW, I just said there is many a ways to reach the SB.

And a team doesn't have to rank in the top 5 or 10 to get there.

Those pressures and INTs at the right time in the playoffs helps sure.

But you can get that without being a upper echelon D.

Colts and Ravens are upper echelon teams, they beat them both.

They beat the Colts at home by outscoring them. That's one. But they also lost to the rats twice last year. So I'm not sure how that means anything. NE destroyed Indy worse than the Steelers did.... twice. If you really think the Steelers are going to win a bunch of games by giving up almost 500 yards then there is nothing I can say. But you are going to be extremely disappointed. Last year was the easiest schedule in the league while also playing only on the east coast. Everything went their way. This year will be different as they play good teams on the road and actually have to leave their own time zone.

Just because something has happened in the past, it doesn't mean it is going to happen again...

Yep. This is an area they will have to improve on. Could they be better this season? Yep. Could they be worse? Yep. Could they be about the same? Yep. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

when did I say anything about amount of yards given up?

I am not sure either one of us knows the precise amount acceptable.

But I would take giving up less points (FGs) over giving up less yardage but a ****** red zone percentile.

And the bottom line is the D needs to improve, which I know we both agree on.

In the end result whatever it takes to get there and win it all.

Better RedZones for both our units will go a long way for us.

I think Bell is going to have a monster season. Too bad he won't be available til game 3 though.

We won't miss him for the Pats** game. If Brady* plays they'll ***-rape us for 50 points minimum, if Janene Garafalo plays we can beat them without Bell.
Last I looked, the 49'ers had a pretty good defense so I think we'll miss him more in game two actually. /silver lining

This post on the video's site spells out some pretty scary scenarios for opposing D's......

Now, with a CB lined up against A.B, Wheaton, Bryant… do you stick another CB on the field in case Bell lines up in the slot? Or do you put another LB on the field in hopes to reign in the run? Now, if you have a 3/4 or 4/3 defense on the field, that only affords you 5 DB’s. If Bell is in the slot, one of your safeties has to come down and either play Bell or stay lower to help a LB cover Bell. That leaves one safety over the top to help cover A.B., Wheaton and Bryant. Now if you load up the box on Bell and Archer/Williams, you are leaving your secondary susceptible to our receivers. If Bell swings to the outside and lines up as a receiver, you have to respect his ability to run a route and make a catch… that leaves less people in the box to stop Archer/Williams out of the backfield

Yikes!
