Official Steelers training camp thread (updates)

That actually is a good sign. Jarvis's play vs the run was a big reason that Harrison was brought back... but ultimately, still the whole success of the JJ pick will still hinge on whether he can consistently get pressure on the QB, not his play in coverage or vs the run.

Totally agree. In the 3-4 the ROLB has to be a rusher. Most teams run right which falls to the LOLB in a 3-4. If Jones can't rush the passer then he has little value in the 3-4.

Absoluetly, but sometimes player sell out vs the pass and start getting gashed vs the run, or worse worry so much about their ability to shed blocks and play the run that they don't get the push or position they need for the pass rush. IMO that does describe JJ at times in the past.

Probably. But he'll have to figure that out. Some of that comes with experience.

I've always know Jarvis is decent vs. the run. He's fundamentally sound. Good pad level. Gets low.

He just sucks at pass rushing because he has no explosion in his game. Jarvis Jones is a white man that can't jump. No amount of weight training is going to change that. Every sack he gets will either be a free run or a coverage sack he gets from working hard. I'm not even sure he can beat a RB or TE one-on-one at this level yet, let alone a starting caliber LT.

Its definitely at the make or break point and by make I mean a 5-7 sacks Clark Haggans deal or a Jason Worilds flash big once in a while. He will not be a star player. Anyone who can't see that does not know much football. Even a guy like Heyward, who is a late bloomer for sure flashed great strength in his second year taking ball carriers down with one hand.

I don't think Heyward was a late bloomer... I think he was buried behind guys coaches favored and I think some are worried that is going to happen with Jarvis Jones. Maybe he becomes the stud we need, but honestly it looks like he might be average at this point, and worse that there may be OLBs behind him that show more promise that wont get a chance till its time to pay them or lose them.

I could of sworn the only reason Harrison was brought back was injury. Where is all this it was Jarvis play coming from..no injury last year Harrison is not brought back.

At this point my hope for JJ is to be a solid run defender and a 7-8 sack a year guy. Honestly, he misses a lot of tackles in the run game and couldn't beat my 6 year old one-on-one is pass rushing so the reality is a backup or core special teamer.

7-8 sacks? Woah there!!! Lets work on 4-5 sacks.

He has played in 21 games, starting 11 of them, with 3 sacks total in 2 years. If he has improved and can stay healthy, I think a realistic number is 5.

Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would put this in the training camp one. Steelers released their depth chart for the Vikings game. I don't see any shockers in there to be honest.

Sunday they best be ready !

He had 2 sacks in less than 3 full games before suffering that wrist injury.

That is a very small sample to work with and likely to be fraught with errors. I hope Jarvis does work out and turn into the great player you think he is we will just disagree on his ability and likely production. If you are right it is very good for the team and that is always a good thing. I once thought Tony Hill might improve and turn into something but that did not happen either.

I'm pretty sure AL never said Jarvis was great

Al is quite firmly in the jarvis camp and that is fine, he also seems to me to imply that he will be our next starter and in no need of replacement. That goes through the thread with his posts just follow them. I feel otherwise but hope I am wrong and he is right. Lots of guys see the playoffs in the future this season I do not I think we will be a team developing a new identity this year and may make a turn around in a season or two.

Player by player practice review.

Eli Rogers was waived today. Apparently his foot sprain is severe. Tough break. Kid was impressing

hopefully he signs with the team later and shows up for next season

If JJ can generate consistent pressure I could care less what his sack total is. Hopefully this will be his break out year. I just can't get out of my head all the stuff our draft guys on here have said about him before we drafted him.....only because they haven't been wrong to this point in JJ's career.

Wait, but there were reports he was the only guy who could play slot in the whole NFL... what will we EVER do now? lol... tough break though....

Unfortunate, but he probably wasn't going to make the team anyway. Brown, Wheaton, Bryant and Coates are locks and we know that DHB can play in a pinch and contribute on special teams. There are your five. Not sure it's worth keeping a sixth given that Archer is a slot receiver even though they'd like to think he's a running back.

If it wasn't mentioned yet, Robert Golden with an injury today
