Official Steelers training camp thread (updates)

another report - day 3

so far what I read it is encouraging about Cortez Allen. Obviously way too early to tell, but it has a early look of a bounce back season. Which the Steelers could really use.

For how much promise Shazier shows, I hope Vince Williams still gets a good fair share of reps. Especially on run downs.

Of all the rookies so far out of the gates it looks like Doran might have a early lead on the rest of the pack. Although Bud is showing a good pass rush burst.

(again I realize it is much too early to put stock in anything)

You have to wonder if we will keep Williams in the future and let Timmons walk. While I have always like Timmons I do not want to get into the trap of holding on to players one contract to long.

Great to hear Allen is looking better. I think Boyd is a better passer than Jones, but he gets rattled easily. Maybe the NFL has helped in that regard.

This would be the shrewd move. You lose some in defending the pass, but gain in run defense. Although, Timmons seemed to be willing to do what it takes to remain in Pittsburgh.

I would def let Timmons walk and Keep Spence and Williams.

No way I let Timmons walk.

Especially being he said he'd take less to stay in the Burgh.

Although it's been stated here many times before. Is Landry Jones really the best we can come up with. Sounds as if the kid hasn't improved at all.

I think this season's results will play a major role in this determination. That is, if the Steelers defense steps it up and Timmons is a major influence again, the Steelers in all likelihood will try to re-sign him. OTOH, if the defense remains mired in mediocrity or worse, then there would be no reason to retain him for anything more than the price that the Steelers feel they can pay for a player on a unit that didn't improve.

Timmons never said he would take less...he said he would restructure. Stop saying that means less money...it does not at all.. It actually is great for the player and he gets more upfront $$$$

Timmons is looking better than he has for a while. Jarvis Jones is being manhandled by Beachum who continues to get better every year it seems. Chick and Bud are showing promise as are some of the other guys. Jarvis does not look good unless playing against guys that are likely going to be working construction after the first cut downs.

Alright, a restructure would reduce his impact on the cap and keep our best ILB on the squad.

Doesn't mean I don't want to see our younger ILB's step up.

Hey Pap, you need to post more often instead of lurking. Haven't seen you in awhile. Hope all is well with you.

No. 10 characters.

I would say the only reason to let Timmons walk would be based on cost vs play. He is playing well and may not be the next hall of fame inside player in the nfl but the only key here is would he cost more than his level of play is worth. Is Shazier developing into the guy to replace him, or Williams or Spence. All of that remains to be seen. He might become a cap casualty that asks more than he is worth to the team or more than the team can afford to spend on the position. His play has been fairly steady over the years as his reliability but sometime it will decline the tough part is guessing when. The time to really look at this will be toward the end of the season of his last contract year and base any offers on that.

Why would you let Timmons walk? I like Williams, he reminds of Foote, but he's not near where Timmons is. And Spence has shown nothing really.

I hear Calipari was at camp. Who let that dirtbag in anyway?

Given that Jarvis is STILL trash, is it possible he doesn't even make the 53?

I read yesterday that JJ showed good power with his hands during drills. Something unseen before.

I read that as well, it was said regarding his play against the undrafted guys, it also said Beachum tossed him around like a rag doll. Now Beachum maybe still improving but it does not say much for JJ as no one considers Beachum an elite tackle. He has been over achieving since day one (Beachum) so continuing to improve is nothing new for him. I wonder how he would do if he had to face Harrison for a good bit of practice, even an older James Harrison is still a force to be reckoned with.

I suspect in many instances guys are finding something nice to say whenever possible and it does not hurt to not be negative about a coaches 1st round pick that has done nothing since his arrival.

big report from them today lot of reading

NOT-SO-SUBTLE PERSUASION: Tomlin noticed rookie WR Eli Rogers leaving the field following practice while other wide receivers were still catching passes from the Jugs machine in the far end zone.

“Hey Eli, No. 84’s out-working you over there,” Tomlin pointed out.

Rogers did an about face and joined the group working in the end zone.
