Yep. Front office has no issues paying an aging less talented CB $24 mill. Front office actually increased his salary when trading for him. Now Porter....already better than Ramsey and will get better ...the front office wants to nickel and dime him. The front office sees Ramsey a $24 mill talent. What do they see Porter as?

Plenty of guilt for both parties

Tomlin directly at fault for the on field stuff and roster debacles BUT

Tomlin ain’t making the call on whether to pull all the guaranteed $$$ or not though or contract language that sets that in place as a guard rail…that’s above his altitude

Art the flaccid and Mediocre Mike worked in tandem for this pathetic standard…at least one is gone, hopefully Art the flaccid is gone soon too

The Steelers have pretty much offered their guys very competitive offers, even making some the highest-paid in the league. So, this notion of them being cheap is pretty ridiculous. I still think an original offer of $25 million was more than adequate. With some offers for other CB's recently, I'd go up to about $28 million for him with about $60 million guaranteed. Very respectable offer for him being a top-15 or top-10 CB. In fact, that would probably put him in the top-10 and near the top-5 highest-paid CBs. I wouldn't give him anywhere near $35 milllion per.

If JPJ is over priced, or a poorly shaped piece for MM’s defense it is indeed stupid to throw bad money at him when he could return an asset that could be invested in a long neglected offense.

Throwing 30 mill plus at a 10-15 mill position doesn’t make cents.

The team needs an overhaul badly and continuing to over invest in the defense is just taking more steps down the wrong path when money and assets need to be reallocated to the offense.

Throwing money at Benton, Herbig and JPJ is just more eggs in the defensive basket in an offensive league.

Hopefully MM, Khan and Co are smarter than to continue down the Tomlin roster “building” path.

I just don't see it as bad money for Benton and Herbig. The way the cap goes up every year...the idea of a cap is almost an illusion. And Heyward is gonna retire at some point as is Watt. Or Highsmith will be traded. With Porter, I just think a corner, with the present rules enforcement, might be bad money. Come to think of it, maybe you're right about Herbig too, for that very reason. Hell, these guys can be held with impunity.

Idk, the biggest thing for me is the cap. I think it exists solely to give owners an excuse if they don't want to pay somebody. Instead of just saying they don't want to pay him, it's the cap, the cap! They have the right not to pay a guy if they don't want to.

Keeping in mind that the “Cam” is near end. Benton may be looked as a replacement bound for that replacement.

Also keeping in mind that the Steelers are continuously using the full “Cap” to pay the players.

Also keeping in mind that Highsmith has a great chance as being delt and not on the team, thus the Herbig becoming a starter next season.

these new contracts are crazy. put in perspective Big Ben's largest per year contract was a two year deal worth 34 million a year in 2019 after he had already been to three SB's winning two.

Ben made $267.3 million over 18 years now we got TJ making almost half of that in THREE years. makes my head hurt lol.

I know the cap changes and contracts are through the roof, but JPJ a freaking CB seems to be looking for more money in four years than Ben's EIGHT YEAR contract for $108 million,

Herbig signing $100 million for four years is mind blowing, so I do kinda get where JPJ is coming from but DAMNNNN.

It's no wonder the Sunday ticket is $500.

Totally agree that the cap is an illusion, preached that for years.

You can keep nearly anyone you want…but you can’t keep and pay everyone top dollar or over market value. That is when the illusion disappears and the cap becomes a legit speed bump up to a high hurdle depending how poorly the capologist/illusionist failed.

The Steelers have way over invested in D for years in an offensive league catering to a tough guy image that league doesn’t even allow. IMHO it’s a misguided way to build a roster.

A competitive team requires a good offense which in turn generally requires

A) A franchise QB
B) some weapons
C) a defense that is not a complete sieve

The Steelers invest way too much on D for the return on that investment. Until they fix the philosophy I’m not sure they can truly contend for anything meaningful.

Thought an offensive mind like MM would get the Steelers taking those first steps backtracking from the wrong path they’ve headed down for years.

I doubt Benton lives up to his deal-hope I’m wrong
Highsmith/Watt likely won’t play to their pay
Herbig will earn that money, maybe…once he’s a starter
Ramsey’s money is stupid
Queen seems overpaid for the return

DK Metcalf 4 years, $132 million
Michael Pittman 2 years, $35 million
Pat Freiermuth 4 years, $48.4 million
Darnell Washington 4 years, $42 million
Rico Dowdle/Jalen Warren combined for an average of $12 million/year

Omar Khan has used 10 of 15 draft picks in rounds 1-3 on offensive players. The Steelers are investing in the offense, we just haven't seen them re-sign guys they drafted like they are on the defensive side of the ball right now. That doesn't excuse overvaluing outside additions (Queen, Ramsey) or overpaying aging vets on the downside of their careers (Watt), but building through the draft and keeping these guys for a second contract is the way to build. The missing QB is still the single biggest thing holding this team back.
