WTF are we doing?

And that is fair. But in those 5 years from 2014-2018 they had a great offense. They were as good an offense as anyone in the league. It's fair to remember that game in 2013, but should we discount those 5 years? What I am objecting to is the idea that Ben could have done more with an offensive minded coach, as if Tomlin was always anti-offense. He wasn't, and those years show it.
2014Lost Wild Card RoundLost to the Baltimore Ravens 30–17
2015Lost Divisional RoundBeat the Cincinnati Bengals 18–16 (Wild Card), then lost to the Denver Broncos 23–16
2016Lost AFC Championship GameBeat the Miami Dolphins 30–12 and Kansas City Chiefs 18–16, then lost to the New England Patriots 36–17
2017Lost Divisional RoundLost at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 45–42
2018Missed playoffsFinished 9–6–1

I think three of the years with such a high touted O should have yielded better results. I give them a push to the two years they won playoff games.

I’m honestly surprised that we didn’t make a play for Kenny Pickett before the Panthers snatched him up. Sounds like something we would have done. Also, wouldn’t be surprised if Omar Con tried and failed.

It should have. However, in 2014, they lost Leveon Bell for the playoffs and had no threat from the backfield. In 2015, they had no Bell, and Ben got hurt against Cincy and played hurt, and Brown was out against the Broncos. In 2016 Bell was dominate...a great running game is good offense too, isn't it? Then he was lost again in the Patriots game. When they had everyone together to put up 42, the defense couldn't stop an offense led by Blake Bortles. You know all these facts, and because they are facts, they don't really support the idea that Tomlin was anti-offense.

Again, no one is letting Tomlin off the hook. To me the biggest problem in those years is he couldn't develop a reliable defense.

The latest I'm seeing has Rodgers back to where he was last year with waiting until May or June to make a decision. If the Steelers let him play that game again, they are dumber than we all thought. If he hasn't made a decision prior to the draft, they MUST move on. There is no point in keeping him even if he did make the decision before the draft. My stance on putting Howard in at QB1 still stands, and then draft a QB to compete with him with Rudolph as QB3. Enough is enough with this nonsense.

I want no part of Simpson. None. I would prefer Allar or some other later round guy.

Agree with this so much I started a thread based on who we do NOT want in the 1st round and eliminated Simpson as a choice since he is so clearly not a 1st round QB. Aside from Mendoza - who is legit - this QB draft is 2022 all over again.

I am not even sold completely on Mendoza. Not first overall.

Just curious what your opinion is of players head sizes. Inquiring minds want to know.

Mendoza is big, fast, moves around in the pocket, can scramble for yards and is accurate. He played legit competition and his TD to Surrat in the corner of the endzone against Oregon in their first game demonstrated very good arm strength. He is not Elway or Manning in terms of scouting rating but he is really good.

I don't think he is terrible, but QBs get drafted way too high simply based on the position. Drafting him that high gives him big bust potential.

If only the Raiders still had Kenny Pickett, they could nab Carnell Tate at 1/1 and dominate!

If you read the negatives on the scouting reports on him, the RPO system was designed to give him a lot of easy reads, and he wouldn't go through progressions like you want. Also, almost 100% shotgun QB. In a better QB class he'd be a late first rounder.

I’m pretty sure the vast majority knew that they were that dumb. Nothing shocking about this whatsoever.

The fact he took so few snaps under center is the only real criticism I have of him. I don't base my thoughts about his talent level on the stats but instead look at some of the throws he made against quality competition (Oregon x 2, Ohio State, Alabama, Miami). He threaded the needle with a perfect dart with a defender literally in his face against Iowa, the TD to Surrat against Oregon, numerous throws from the middle of the field to the sideline that are right on target with plenty of zip.

He played against legit defenders, good secondaries. He faced a lot of blitzes against Oregon and Iowa. He is big, stands in the pocket and delivers the ball accurately. He's legit. The problem he faces is going to a Raiders team that is awful and will get him hit 10x per game.

The more I keep looking into the 2027 draft class of QB's, the more the whole hiring of McCarthy is about that decision (at least to me).

That's the draft. Write it down, we are taking a QB round 1. Even if we don't end up in the top-10, it sounds like that class has so much depth that QB's on the board that are #4-#7 could be legit first round picks.

I'm not saying they are ALL going to be great, but with McCarthy now doing a lot of the evaluation for us, it has to give us a bit of an advantage to build someone up into a good starter. At least our next "franchise guy". And certainly better than someone like Pickett.

I am not joking by saying there are probably 8 prospects, on paper, that look better than Pickett and we drated him #22 overall. Some will fall/rise on the tape they put up this year in college, but the talent, size, arm strength, atleticism, pedigree of some of next year's class is just solid all around.

God, I just don't want to force a QB in this draft coming up. Please, please, please don't be impatient and don't let Art Rooney get into the mix on this one.

This is the exact take many had last year about this year’s draft…8 great prospects are coming out…wait til next year.

Please tell me how the half breed Manning will be the next generational QB 🤪 same **** people said last season (before he had done squat)…still has a lot to show. La’Norris was gonna be great too until he progressed zero steps forward. Sayin, Moore, Chambliss, Leavitt, Maiava, Mateer…these guys will be picked apart too. Sure 2-3 will likely succeed

It just cracks me up to no end how it’s always “next year” for the Steelers. I’ll believe they are plotting a move IF they pass on QBs this year and start moving this year’s draft capital into next year via trades.

I totally agree, don’t force a pick. That is always solid draft strategy. There sure are several guys worth taking a day 3 swing on cuz the “next year” pitch keeps whizzing by the Steelers who still have a serious void to fill.

ffs we’re the Chicago Cubs 🤮
Next year 🤪

This really does happen every year. Google "way too early 20xx mock draft" to find post-draft mocks a year in advance. They're hilarious.

In 2022, BR was mocking Spencer Rattler first overall, Sam Howell 2nd. Malik Willis and Matt Corral top 10. Carson Strong to the Steelers at 14 :ROFLMAO:

Not only was it said last year, but the way the Steelers were adding picks to make a move so they could draft the next franchise QB in Pittsburgh was all the rage.

As we covered somewhere else within these threads I agree how that played out.

Chances are it will not dud out like this one did. Not proclaiming franchises up the wahoo just not the bottom feeding uninspiring look of this draft.

Steelers still might have to draft up I do like their chances to find a decent option.

Ultimately every draft is a wait and see. Some look promising and fade, others surprise while looking meh.

They have to keep swinging to the fence until they hit. Just the way it is…

The only thing worse than waiting for next year is the alternative.

I wish cooch would come back and architect that trade for Burrows.

I see Rodgers joining the team at the same time he did last year. I assume it's a done deal just like last year. Rodgers, as an over 40 vet, will join once all of the early non-mandatory/mandatory stuff is done. He will work out on his own and with a few guys but won't be joining until just before camp. This seems to be pretty typical for a lot of vets.

How many veteran QB's that are supposed to be the leader of a team do that? I know he was with McCarthy in GB, but it's been almost 10 years and there's new coordinators, you'd think you'd want the QB here. Sam Darnold was at OTA's for Seattle last year, Joe Flacco was at Browns OTA's last year.

Where are all the "they are bringing him back to mentor the younger QB's" people at, if true he'd be here working with them as much as possible.

I am one of those hoping for that. Why bring back a 43 year old QB if that isn't a consideration? But you are right, you'd like to think he'd be around.
