I've been thinking more about McDermott this morning. Has there been any chatter about the Steelers interviewing him?
His career reminds me of Andy Reid with the Eagles. Another really good coach that was ultimately let go because his Eagles teams frequently came up short when it mattered. Andy did quite well at his next stop.
The Bills were a dumpster fire for two decades before McDermott arrived. Under his coaching, they made the playoffs 8 of his 9 years. If not for the Chiefs dynasty during much of that time, who knows what they may have done.
It goes against the Steelers' tradition of bringing in young guys that have never been a coach before and he is older at 51. However, Reid was 54 when he joined the Chiefs.
McDermott has also shown he's capable of developing QB talent under his watch since he was the coach when Josh Allen was drafted.
Brian Daboll was the OC when Allen was drafted and instrumental in his early development and success. Daboll got a raw deal with the giants. As an owner, I'd give a lot of consideration to possibly bringing in McDermott as the HC and Daboll as the OC.
The Steelers may want a young guy like Shula with less experience as the HC since management will have more control and not have to pay as much money.
