The head coach search

I’m hearing a lot of Mike McCarthy talk on sports talk radio in Pittsburgh today.
Supposedly he turned down Titan’s interview this week before they made their hire and turned down some other interview requests.
Rooney simply cannot be serious about hiring this guy who is twice fired and 63 years old.
If he hires McCarthy I really have to question Art’s mental acuity at 73 years of age. That would be totally ridiculous and absolutely a dagger to the heart.
Dallas couldn’t wait to run this guy out of town.
Please tell me this ain’t so!
I could never get passed the Dallas stink on him if hired.

Surely this has got to be clickbait make believe. When I hear they want to hire Mike, and he can talk Aaron into coming back for another year,I mean that’s simply absurd . There’s no way there’s truth to it,right?

He’s just like Mike to offense, but a slightly more adept defensive schemer and a lot more of a hardass

Numbers like that really make me want an offensive mind at HC so we can start building a modern identity based off scoring points.

I'd say Flores is more than a "slightly" better schemer than Tomlin.

His leadership as a HC obviously isn't as proven as Tomlin's over an extended period, but he actually showed a lot more than he's given credit for, given the situation he was in with Stepen Ross in Miami.

Those teams had every reason to go 5-11 each year Flores was there, as that is what those above him wanted, but it didn't happen that way.

Flores would have to have a knack for hiring OCs in order to succeed, as Cowher did.

People criticize Flores OCs in Miami, but Chan Gailey (though older) was a good hire, and it's my understanding that he wanted to bring him back again, but you know......Stephen Ross.

Booted wasn't being serious with his comments. Antagonistic, yes...serious, no
Often on message boards is sarcasm, antagonism, debating, etc. is hard to decipher.

We all should never assume the worst unless it is clear.

I look for patterns.

But doesn’t make it easier to decipher. If in doubt simply ask the poster.

It isn’t mission impossible Ethan!

😉

McCarthy shouldn't even be considered. Go with a young, up-and-comer as they did with Noll, Cowher, and Tomlin.

I can hear the Mission Impossible theme music playing in my head. Good one.

🎵If I had my way I'd have all of you shot.🎵

I really don't want an older ex-coach either. No Flroes, McCarthy or even McDermott. I don't like Weaver either.... he's been the bridesmaid too often for my liking. He looks like a defensive version of Eric Bieniemy (and he has too much Ravens stink on him).

Let's go with either Shula or Scheelhaase and be done with it. Pick the guy you like best.

Art knows what it takes to win in today's NFL. And it starts with hiring a Black head coach. Some on this board are more worried about getting a White guy then they are with winning.
Mark my words, the next time we hoist a Lombardi trophy is when it is being held aloft by the steady Black hands of a great head coach.
Jerod Mayo is available.....

The other side of that coin is Flores is a shackle to offense, just like Mike was.

Tua got instantly better with his departure.

I’m not going to argue how much/slightly better a schemer he is. It’s a 100 hard pass for me on Flores as a HC. DC sure, 100…would take him back in a heartbeat. Seems many players didn’t like him too, not a top dog type of guy…a solid 2 or 3 though imho.

The last thing this team and fans need is another set of shackles for the offense. We just got out of GHD, I ain’t ready for 15-20 more years of it.

he had to get rid of a disgruntled Minkah, a guy known for been a team leader and heavy worker since college. That's another notch on the BAD list

What if McCarthy is hired as Asst HC, QB development?

Hire Shula as HC, SteelerChasser as OC, retain Ayahuasca A-Ron for one more season, and insist the McCarthy and Rodgers develop Howard just like Rodgers and Love were developed over 3 seasons in Green Bay.

Shula has not been a HC, Steelchasser has never been OC and McCarthy gets to stay at home, advise and mentor the young guys from within.

McCarthy is pretty good offensive wise, but in Dallas and GB the defense was bad. I still want no parts of him though. Flores as DC would be fine.

del…
Shula ain’t coming here.
Scheelhaase needs to gain more experience, maybe a head gig in the USFL can jumpstart his career.
This team needs a serious cultural change and a guy that’s been there … steelers have a lot of work to do. Say what you will by Tomlin, he did cover up a lot of warts on that roster for the last several years..
Neither of those guys will bring what we need right now.

I would say it was Ben Roethlisberger that covered up a tumor for quite a few years.

Curious as to the warts Tomlin covered up

Spent loads on defense with crap results
A decent HC or DC can get a return on that type of investment.

Thoroughly shackled the offense for close to a decade.

To my eyes Tomlin was the wart. Not sure what actual benefit he brought to the table beyond consistency.

He also seemed to have a lot of extra complacency and apathy to spare and share.

I’m not so sure he did much wart covering. I can’t put my finger on one wart he covered up.

Last three or four years, they had some talent, but certainly not enough if you’re honest with yourself to field even a playoff type football team… which they were able to accomplish most of those years.
As fans, I believe sometimes when we look at players, we put on the rose colored glasses, and when we look at the coaches, we put on glasses that have a different shade that’s not as rosey..
Like I said that team has a lot of work to do.
We gotta get this right, and if you look at what’s left out there to select from our best bet is Flores and/or McCarthy.
