NFL moves PAT to 15y line

Well at least if you create a turnover on a two point attempt you can get two points now.

Goodell stop ******* with the NFL !

I'll bet the patriots* try from the ten, or if a penalty occurs go for a two point try on 1/2 the distance to the goal.

I'm okay with it.

It kind of makes sense to me from a backwards engineering issue.

The league always said it didn't like that 99%+ of extra points were successful, but it never did say what percentage it wanted instead. And I don't think the league wanted to mess too much with the current 2-point conversion success rate of about 48% from the 2-yard line. That's why I wasn't in favor of the 1-yard line option. It's a slippery slope if you start converting 55-60% of 2-point attempts. Could affect the game too much.

Moving the ball back into the 32-33 yard range has a dramatic change on success rate likely into the 95-96% range league wide (last year only 90% of attempts between 30-39 yards made it, but this is on the close end and also placed directly in the middle of the field).

That percentage is much closer to the way it was in the 1970's and 1980's ("the golden age"):

1975-1977: around 92%
1985-1987: around 97%
1995-1997: around 98.5%

I think they didn't want much to change except they wanted the success rate in the 95%-97% range just to make it interesting once in a while.

I suspect that this year the pats inflate the balls with helium so they will carry farther on kicks.

You may be right. Maybe they had word that this was probably going to happen via Rog's dates with Kraft. The incident with the K-Ball during the AFCCG might have been them working the kinks out of their system to replace the kicking game balls with the balls they had altered during the week.

Not Goodell and it eliminates several meaningless boring plays per game. Good move.

The only bad thing is it takes away the surprise 2 point conversion.

This. You botched a snap on a PAT and had good chances to make it a two point play. This sport lives off of "surprising" moments, and now one is taken away. Fake PATs too.

I suppose, if the defense gets the ball and gets it to the opponent 1yard line, the ball is declared dead and it will be a kickoff? Otherwise they could just drop down on the 1y line and get a td with the offense instead of going all the way for 2 points. Oh well. I don't like it. But then again, I'm just some German guy and I'm not paying a cent to watch the games anyway.

I'm not sure if I like it or not. I guess I'll decide during the season. One thing is for sure, it's gonna cost some teams a W.

I still say run it for 1 or pass it for 2. Or spot them an automatic 7 with the option of going for 2 but if you don't make it, you only get 6. Just like how the old NFL Blitz game was. Dicking around with the kick isn't going to change much. Most of the coaches are conservative and will just opt for the 15 yard line kick without even really thinking about.

I love the 2pt for the defense. That will create some excitement. However moving the PAT to the 15 does completely remove the surprise of the fake. Or at least drops it significantly. Now I'm interested to see if penalties effect the options. If the D is offside on the kick, to they move the ball to the 1 1/3 line. If you false start going for 2 can you just kick a XP from the 20? This slippery slope of apples to footballs, creates a divergent effect to the game. Tomlin had it right. Move the XP to the 1yd line. That creates excitement and intrigue. I'm fine with the 2pt being converted 50-60% of the time. It still creates disparity. Doesn't mean you'll make it every time. Some teams will be better at it, and it would return the league to a power running/smashmouth football league again. I'd be all over that ****!

I'm kinda fine with how it was. I coulda probably supported a move to the 1 since kicks would still be automatic and there would be more incentive to go for two. The two point play is one of the most exciting plays in football, if not the most.

From a watchability standpoint the TD review, TV timeout, gimme kick, tv timeout, kickoff touchback, tv timeout stretch is murder to watch especially in a primetime or national TV game.

It'd be nice if these numbnuts would have more 4PM games. Kinda kills buying Sunday ticket when your only 4PM option is Denver, Green Bay or Dallas each week.

The XP itself has nothing to do with all the dead time after a TD. It's barely noticeable. They replay the TD, then show the XP for about 5 seconds, then back to replay and then commercial.

The killer is when they go to commercial after the kickoff. THAT is what they need to change. Bring the offense out immediately after the kickoff.

I'm glad they didn't move the XP to the 1. That could have changed the whole game. Teams would have to go for 2 almost every time. You'd have games being decided by conversions way more often than they should.

Leave things as they are, add 3 point option of a 52 yd kick with the D being able to also score same on the play

Can we finally compare Goodell to the President now??? All this "change" for nuttin'...

if we do it's bound to generate into a hater thread because of the different races involved, seems like anytime that comparison gets made some folks decide race is the one and only issue.

That's was my thought: make the 2 point conversion -1 or + 1. However, this does make things more interesting in the event that an extra point will tie or win the game with little or no time left.

I say leave it alone. I like the possibilty of a fake PAT now thats eliminated. I don't lkie the chance to return the 2 point conversion for a score as well. You either convert or you don't. The defense gets a turnover then that just ends the attempt. Too many changes the last few years. They need to leave a good thing alone.

Better rule- eliminate the XP and force all teams to go for it from the 2.
