Steelers have traded for Jalen Ramsey.

Before the trade the Steelers had a massive hole at CB3. IMO, that's a more important position than free safety. They just made a huge upgrade at a premium position. Teams can get by without a superstar at FS. They literally just need a player who is where he's supposed to be.
Like Ryan Clark

Not sure about “massive hole” at CB3

Had FA Echols who has looked pretty decent as a Jet and Beanie who is a young guy learning the position both as decent slot options

Have Trice as a boundary corner.

So now instead of 3 younger guys developing we have two plus 30 guys (one very close to the end and the other on the downside already slipping to being average) along with JPJ

If we only we had some coach on the roster with DB expertise that could coach these cheap contract, young guns up…man that would be perfect!!!

Not even worried about the wasted 7th rounder that will be lucky to even sniff PS with the logjam in front of him.

But to add one more huge contract aging guy in the secondary and eliminate a starting S which crushed any depth there was at that position…now that does seem to be a hole. A hole that could easily be filled by a FA signing or a coach on the roster that could coach a young safety like Castro up:.:man that would be perfect…if only we had that coach that specialized in DBs somewhere

Meh…I’m just day dreaming
Beanie Bishop was the same guy who was benched for Cam Sutton, who stunk last year. Though, Bishop should've been put back into the starting role.

Either way, the pass defense was subpar last year. I believe 25th in passing yards allowed, middle of the pack in completion percentage, 20th in YPA. They need JPJ to step up and reduce his penalties this year and then added a very good, versatile CB in Ramsey and a veteran who was part of an excellent Eagles' secondary in Slay. Now the Steelers don't have to rely on guys like Bishop, Pierre, or Trice to defend elite receivers such as Chase and Higgins.

I'm shocked people are still questioning Minkah's sudden lack of big plays, it's fairly obvious on the game day broadcast when Minkah isn't even on the screen before the snap most of the time, not going to make a ton plays playing 20 yards downfield in Centerfield.
"The Standard is The Standard" "it's lack of execution"
I know the coaching staff doesn't do the best at putting players in position to succeed, but Ed Reed built a Hall of Fame career playing center field. At some point your playmakers need to make plays. It's what makes guys like Ben and Troy so great because they had the instincts to make things happen no matter the play call.

Whether it was Minkah's fault or otherwise, almost any NFL caliber safety could have done what Minkah did the past two seasons. He was mostly a non-factor.

In Minkah’s defense, as a ball hawking safety, being placed 20 yards from the action is problematic for achieving the desired results.

But that is the genius of the shaded one. He can take a guy that was crushing it and come up with a scheme that deploys him in a way to be totally ineffective…I call this a “Tomcept”

Another brilliant Tomcept was the way Mike deployed a generational talent like TJ in that last meaningless playoff game they played vs a hated rival, all but turning him into Jarvis Jones…slow clap for that genius Tomcept by Mike.

That being said, if Mike was going to shackle Minkah, as appeared to be the case, why pay top dollar for a deep centerfielder??? You are correct that many cheaper options would be available for such a role.

But if the plan was to move on from Minkah they may as well get something more meaningful than an average, aging CB with a bloated contract as a return on the investment (the first round pick we traded for him)…oh that’s right they got a 12m dollar TE/WR2/FB for him as well! Sadly Smith will likely be the better acquisition in this deal.

What also made Ben and Troy great was zero input from Mike…they were free lancers out there doing their own thing…not operating within the constraints of the talent Boa constrictor

Nope instead they have acquired an average guy like JR who will look slightly better than Trice (for a year) at a huge number and a guy that was 9th worst in the league vs contested catches and ranked 28th overall who is another year closer to being put out to pasture.

All these moves are desperate moves to preserve a meaningless streak rather than build a long term contender…as DIC would say reactive rather than proactive

It’s how the squad manages to be in an endless cycle of GHD mediocrity. Just duct taping and pasting away to preserve “the standard” with no hope for a bright future.

Do you honestly believe that today the Pittsburgh Steelers are closer to a playoff run than they were at the end of last season?

But shouldn't being further downfield give you time to react and make a play on the deeper stuff they have been getting burned on?

So Minkah should've freelanced more like Troy. It's not like Tomlin was going to bench him.

Lol, Jalen Ramsey is not average. The last time we saw Trice he was getting absolutely destroyed on the field..

WE are lucky to have a losing streak in the playoffs after losing a player like Ben. Most wouldn't be in the playoffs to continue a losing streak. To say things haven't changed is quite disingenuous. The team has made massive changes the last two years. we can debate the benefit of those changes, but they are not sitting still.
That's the problem, they've made changes EVERYWHERE, GM, almost every single position on the field, Coordinators, but there has been 1 constant, and it's Mediocre Mike.
We're luck to have a losing streak in the playoffs??????? Really, does anyone actually agree with that? Something like 23 teams have won a playoff game since we last won one. I'm pretty sure no one feels good or lucky about that. And not all those teams had a franchise QB.

All this makes the claims from people that they could move Ramsey to safety laughable. So Minkah's lack of splash plays is why they moved on from his contract, and the solution is to trade for a more bloated contract, for an older player, and put him in the same spot and expect better results?? Moving Ramsey to safety would be dumb.

Ed Reed is the elite of the elite, as is Troy and both played on great pass rushing teams , Minkah is no where near their level, but look at how well he played when he was allowed to play in and near the box, then the past two seasons they've put him in centerfield to keep everything in front of him. It's why we get destroyed in the playoffs on the defensive side of the ball, good coaches take advantage of our same old same old scheme.

WR2 and nickel were easily the biggest holes and I think widely talked about. Trice, Bishop, and Pierre aren't going to move the needle and neither was Echols. Slay isn't going into a reserve role and I would be JPJ, Ramsey, and Slay will be on the field together way more often than not.

Slay is 34 years old, if they are relying on him to be a full time player at this point in his career, they are a lot dumber than I thought they were.

Lol, Jalen Ramsey is not average. The last time we saw Trice he was getting absolutely destroyed on the field..

The last time we saw Trice on the field was the first time in a LONG time that Trice was on the field and they had him match up one on one with one of the best WR's in the league with NO help...yeah, put that all on Trice and not the coaching staff that put him in that position to begin with.

But shouldn't being further downfield give you time to react and make a play on the deeper stuff they have been getting burned on?
Not when Baltimore and Philly is running the ball down your throat, and he's still lining up 15-20 yards downfield.

Agreed, but it seems to me that that being further downfield is an excuse for the lack of turnovers.

I'm not for or against the trade, but teams don't throw 20 yards downfield often, Lamar Jackson led the NFL in yards per attempt at 8.8, so being 15-20 yards downfield really limits your chances at turnovers. I just have zero confidence that Tomlin will put any players in position to succeed.

Even tho I wasn’t asking you 🤣 Great let’s place a wager then….a sucker and his money are quickly parted
I’ll take the under 2 playoff wins and you can have the over 2 wins

What stakes would you like?

He was a factor, he didn't get targeted much but he still needed to find ways to produce more than he did. Was it his fault or the scheme? I am not sure. I just know they wanted more game changing plays for what they paid. I will miss him but if Jalen can produce along with Slay and JPJ we might not even notice he is gone when TJ wins DPoY because we can't be nickeled and dimed to death this year in the passing game.
I will the player he was the 1st season we had him. Not the over priced player that he is now.

For the most part Porter wasn't grabbing or making contact more than other top CBs in the league. The refs just threw the flags on him.

I am simply looking at the track record of teams who lose franchise QBS, nothing more nothing less. It is almost always a **** show of epic proportions. It is rare to see otherwise even if there are a few exceptions. To stay competitive in even getting to the playoffs following a departure like that is the exception that proves the rule, and it usually takes quite a while to recover. You can argue we might have been better to suck after he left but even that is no guarantee of success drafting a QB. I am also simply stating aside from the obvious many wanted changed, the team hasn't sat around and accepted the status quo they have TRIED to change things, it may not be what you want but it is massive change.

This offense could be interesting… if the defenses have to come up to stop the run and the short passing game with the tight-ends… should open up deep game the top three receivers run 4.3… the offense has to stay on the field and score enough to give the defense a chance to play down hill… full tilt boogie… down hill!!! im buying what the hell! With our pass rush letting Ramsey roam the field he could lead in picks…dude’s crafty

Yes the massive changes are fine, that's what I'm saying, they've changed everything, but the coach, and while having the highest paid defense, that defense run by that coach has gotten embarrassed in the playoffs. If you're a legit HOF coach you can at the very least be competitive in a playoff game without a top 5 QB.

Well Tomlin hasnt really got anything else to change now... since the last playoff win we have had 3 different HOF type qbs, 3 other first round pick qbs. And The hand picked successor/ backup under center... revamped the Oline, Tes, Wrs, abd RBs.. and are on our 3rd oc and turned over most, if not all, of the offensive position coaches...

On D the DBs get mostly overhauled on an annual basis, the DLine was just rebuilt, and they took forever rebuilding the ILBs... their best depth is in olb...

They are going on the 4th season of being the highest paid defense..

They even switched GMs and changed how the front office is constructed...
Basically... after this the only place left to blame is the HC ...
