Steelers select Bud Dupree in the 1st round

Love the pick, we had the weakest slowest linebacking corps in the league before this pick, no one to play LOLB and set the edge, Now Moats and Harrison can take over from ragdoll Jones at ROLB and let him get on with his life's work as Chuck Noll would say.

Shazier is the FAST LB in the league. Timmons is not slow either. Moats - above average speed - same for Williams and Sly...

The only two slower LB's are Jarvis and Silverback; but, yeah, "we" had the weakest, slowest linebacking corp in the league before Buddy was picked...

The *'s will be picking soon - be sure to share your feedback on your real team...

The aints pick Stephone Anthony ILB with 31 pick.

Cheats pick at 32 wonder if roger gives em 2 because it is unfair for them not to have two.

Damn good pick! I had him second on my Steeler draft list behind Trae Waines from Michigan. I feel better about this first round pick than I did with the last two drafts (Jones/Shazier). Here we go Steelers!!!!

I think they took potential over college tape here and I agree. He has the huge frame and speed. I don't know if he will produce much next year. I don't mind waiting if the player has the traits but needs to fill the toolkit with the skill set. If they don't have the physical attributes it is ******. There was an awfully big run on corners. So I didn't feel comfortable taking like the fifth guy. Our front seven has 5 first rounders and a second. It has to be getting better. Has to.

Might be interesting to see how the mocks went with Dupree falling to us I think no one had him getting to us.

He's got a good football name, Bud.

Steelbuckeye do have dupree's sparq scores close by I'm going to look but if you have that handy it would be nice to have it in this thread.

Lets see if this will copy here

The pSPARQ score is pretty self explanatory. "NFL Perc" score relates to how they stack up against the average athlete in the NFL. An "NFL Perc" score of 50 means the player is an "average" athlete by NFL standards.

A couple things stand out here.

First, Vic Beasley is an elite athlete, but as far as the Giants are concerned, Bud Dupree is an ELITE athlete. His Short Shuttle and 3-cone times keep him from blowing past Beasley, but in terms of pure, down-hill explosiveness -- which as a 270-pound 4-3 defensive end, is what the Giants would want out of him -- Dupree is in a league of his own.

On the other end of things, two players seem remarkably out of place. First is Dante Fowler, a player who is gaining a lot of consideration as the top edge rusher in the draft. His versatility, hustle, and athleticism on tape have drawn rave reviews. To see him as a below average NFL athlete is odd.

Next, and most obvious is Missouri DE/OLB Shane Ray. Ray's 3-cone drill, short shuttle, and jumps heavily penalized him, to the point where he is he is viewed as 50 percent below average athleticism for an NFL player. For a player who's calling card on the field was explosive, dynamic athleticism, this isn't just odd, it is shocking.

And it could enough to scare many people far away from taking Ray.

It should be noted, however, that Ray didn't participate in the Scouting Combine due to a foot injury. His Pro Day performance was different enough from what he showed on tape to raise the question that perhaps his injury wasn't fully healed yet and impacted his performance.
Final Thoughts

But what does it all mean Basil? Well, for my money this is another way to look at the data created by the Combine, and compare across players. But it is also just a tool to confirm what you saw on tape, or go back and take another look. For Bud Dupree, the combine and pSPARQ score confirms what we already knew. He is a rare athlete and when he is allowed to just pin his ears back and rush, Dupree is legitimately explosive. For Ray, the Pro Day results and SPARQ score force us to go back and take another look at his tape. Does that lack of athleticism show up on tape? Or is the problem with the workout?

For me, tape is still King, but tools such as these can help you make sense of it.

the 4 mocks on cbssports had him 2 at 6, 1 at 8 and 1 at 13

on first round grades Steelers got only A+

Sorry Wing ... just saw your post above or I would have posted that for you.

Edit: and I wouldn't complain if they were somehow able to get Davis Tull later in the draft.

I really like his burst off the snap, VERY quick.

No problem I was just not sure I could track it down. There are 2 guys right behind Bud that would be nice to get and they are still available, OWA and Clark with Clark likely to be available late in the draft. At this point either one would be great to add to the team if they fall to us. We may see a run on corners so I'm in favor of going to rushers if corner is a reach next round. If we do end up with all three it increases the odds of getting two good ones and a backup. We can then cut loose the guys that do not measure up.

Let me put this out, and I am not a big Bud Dupree fan as I think his film can be pretty pedestrian at times, but he is 6040-269 and ran a 4.57 forty with a 1.6 10-yard split. His vertical jump was 42" with a broad jump of 11'6". His shuttle was 4.48 with a 3-cone of 7.52. He sat most of his freshman season, started for 3. His career numbers are 247 tackles, 37 TFLs, 23.5 sacks, and 1 INT. Now, there was a guy the Steelers passed on in 1999 that was 6'4", 262 pounds. He ran a 4.43 and 4.58 forty at the combine. He had a 37" vertical, 10'2" broad jump, and 4.24 shuttle. He redshirted as a freshman and in his 3 years as a starter, he had 145 tackles, 34.5 TFLs, 16.5 sacks, and 1 INT. The guy they passed on was Jevon Kearse. Eerily similar in terms of athletic freaky guy and a little better production. Just pointing that out. Would not get too worked up over him yet. He does have potential.

Two words ... Joey Porter. The kid is raw. If he's a hard worker and smart (which one of his draft profiles alluded to him earning some type of academic award), Porter can coach him up. Maybe work him into the rotation this year and turn him loose next year.

Dude had 10 yd split faster than Amari Cooper, that shows explosion.

if he weren't raw he might be a top 5 pick. The Steelers have the homework to teach and develop him, so maybe this season he won't be a world beater, but next season he can become unstoppable

I'm okay with Dupree right now. It's the safe pick. I think Gregory has more upside on the weak side, but if you are a coach/GM that still believes in Jones on the weak side then this pick makes a ton of sense.

He is literally going to start at ROLB this season, game one. And Steeler Nation has been critical of taking time on rookies, but Tomlin is throwing them to the wolves.

He's stiff. Like Woodley a bit. But taller and just as explosive.

I wanted this team to get bigger and more physical off the bus. Dupree helps in that regard. He is not a runner-hitter (as Tombert likes to pump up lately).
