First we don't know if Bells suspension will last the entire three games, he will appeal. Second, why bring up someone from nearly 30 years ago to try and make a point about the Steelers way of doing business? Was Merriweather considered the best at his position? Are the same people in the same position of power they were in 1987? This situation is completely different, but keep beating that drum that this is still the Steelers team of old, run the exact same way yadda yadda yadda... and Brown signed his contract THREE years ago. Not sure why people keep getting this confused, he played the 2012, 2013, and 2014 seasons under the contract.
Another "funny" misconception about the defense going into this year. Four starters on defense? Keisel was a rotational player, Tuitt and Heyward are better options. As much as I loved Keisel, at this point this is an upgrade at the STARTER position. Ike retired, missed 11 games last year, and in the 5 games he did play in, was not good. I love Ike, what he did for the team, his work ethic, his attitude, but he was easily replaced by special teamers playing above their capabilities. Troy retired, also missed significant time, was replaced by Will Allan who filled in and some would say played better than Troy. Troy was not Troy, had no INT's, no Sacks, was only credited with ONE pass defense all year. Again a legend for the Steelers, but past his time. Jason Worilds, retired... shocked everyone. But he got ripped apart on this very board for being inconsistent, not good against the run, average against the pass, we over paid him last year and he underperformed. We might not have an all pro type player waiting in the wings, but replacing his production shouldn't be too difficult considering it was average at best to begin with.
Cortez Allan is the big question mark on D, does he bounce back, or continue to regress? If he bounces back, our secondary doesn't look quite so bad. If he doesn't, we'll rely on whoever they get in the draft. But at least they'll have more upside than McCain and Blake. They stepped up big time last year, but there's a reason they are backup/special teamers.
Manning's arm might not even start off well this year, he was looking pretty crappy last year. And speaking of Manning, how many years did he make the playoffs in Indy with a horrible defense by a prolific offense? But somehow we don't stand a chance?
