Harrison, Steelers agree to 2 year deal

I think you are misreading it. The way it reads to me is that Harrison will not move to the left side. Jarvis could move to the left side, however they see Moats as starting on the left. Your scenario would have Harrison starting on the right and Jones and Moats fighting it out on the left. Harrison's agent has already said that Harrison is coming back in a "supporting" role, not a starting role.

Exactly what I was thinking, it wouldn't make sense. They sure wrote it in a confusing way...at least to me.

So is Jones getting time on both sides? Or Moats? With Harrison staying put at just the right side.

Harrison is staying put on the right side. I can't wait til camp comes around and we can see how they work in Moats, Jones, a draft pick and presumably someone from the Zumwalt, Howard Jones, Lemon group. I think though that the key to determining a rotation will be if and by how much J. Jones has progressed and the ability of the draft pick.

June 1 because then they save more money under the cap.
I think they can designate him a June 1st cut now or something along those lines.

Jones needs to get his head out of his *** and step up and play. If he sucks or get injured a lot this year, he's done here.

"Real happy to have James stay," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Sunday at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix. "This offseason James has been great with our young defenders and particularly our linebackers. I think he's taken on a mentorship role and he seems to really be enjoying it. Plus we think he can still help us on the field."

Glad to hear this. I've been a "wait and see" guy on Jones. However, if he's being mentored by Harrison, working out with Harrison and getting coached by Joey .... well, that's instruction from two of the greatest OLBs to have played in the last 15 - 20 years. This is his make or break year.

The Steelers did not necessarily sign Harrison to start at right outside linebacker but they did not bring him back to sit either.

Colbert said he expects an "open competition" at right outside linebacker where Jones will enter offseason practices as the starter. Harrison will push Jones and play in front of Jones if the 2013 first-round draft pick falters.

So, it appears that either Kaboly got it wrong or the folks citing Kaboly were wrong about what Kaboly was saying. In any event, it's good that Jones knows there's someone there pushing him to take that starting spot.

I'm all for the Harrison signing. But why the H@LL are we to that? Shlit, he is the best flucking OLB we have, What a disgrace this has come to. For a FRANCHISE known for it's LB 's, why is this? This no knock on James Harrison, it's a knock on the current GM for letting it get to this. A slow Hacki-sack exit should be instore for Kevin....................
..........Thank you James and may you wreack havis on the opposition, ALL season.

Salute the nation

Answered in another thread.

They have completely abandoned their defensive philosophy which is to (1) stop the run to make the opponent one dimensional, (2) rush the quarterback and (3) prevent against the big play. McLendon is a decent, but not a great presence in the middle, the outside linebackers are terrible and the secondary is awful as well. They need help at all three levels of the defense and it all starts with the pass rush. Colbert has not done well drafting outside linebackers:

2000-Clark Haggans (5th)
2002-Alonzo Jackson (2nd)
2004-Nathaniel Adibi (5th)
2007-LaMarr Woodley (2nd)
2008-Bruce Davis (3rd)
2010-Jason Worilds (2nd)
2010-Thaddeus Gibson (4th)
2011-Chris Carter (5th)
2013-Jarvis Jones (1st)

That's three decent ones in 14 years and two in the past 7.
Although I would allow that stopping the run isn't as important as it used to be because with the rules the way they are now most teams are one-dimensional by choice anyway.

Given how our run defense operates, I'd say it is still pretty important. I know teams can pass easier now, but it doesn't help the defense that they are gashed on the ground on a weekly basis either.

Kovacevic has some interesting thoughts on re-signing Harrison and the efforts of the F.O. so far this off season.

The facts are these:

• The Steelers have a far tougher schedule in 2015, No. 1 in the NFL, actually. What worked to get them to 11-5 last season won’t be good enough this season.

• The Steelers have a terrific offense, maybe the league’s most dynamic, and could be a legit Super Bowl contender with even a mediocre defense. They don’t have that.

• The Steelers have money. They have cap room.

• The Steelers have done next to nothing in terms of acquiring outside talent to address either of two vacancies — and they describe outside linebacker and cornerback the same way — since the season ended, even as they saw Jason Worilds retire and Brice McCain sign elsewhere.

• The Steelers have now waited long enough that neither position could reasonably be upgraded through free agency, so they’ll have to wait for the draft. And neither position could be upgraded immediately through the draft. That’s not realistic.

So all of this is worth applauding … why exactly?

To this point in the offseason, the Steelers’ management has been utterly derelict in duty as it relates to making their defense viable and doing all they can to take advantage of a superior offense. And I can’t begin to understand why.

If it's a coaches job to coach the players that the FO gives him, at least those acquired during FA, Colbert and Co. are definitely hamstringing the coaching staff with their efforts. I hope the lackadaisical approach doesn't come back to haunt the team this season. But it is a concern.

How do you "know" what Jarvis is going to bring to the table this season???
Nobody knows for sure but the naysayers have been spot on to this point. I'm not even sure bulking up is going to help the man with no moves.

So why would the Titans sign a 37 yr old ...to make Dick happy? i just didn't see it happening. With what we have here I'm glad he signed with us though.

They signed orakapo and I would not count on him beating James for a spot in a fair competition. Forget the age, James had back surgery and is in good shape now. He works out and takes good care of his body. There is a real good reason to believe that James could end up starting on a lot of squads. He may have JJ come in and spell him for a bit so he stays fresh and jj gets some reps.

i agree in general but i didn't see a good free agent with reasonable price to get , probably they will be same value players at lesser rate after the june cuts

You don't spend good money on bad product...

As I said in another string....I think the Steelers are going to trade up into the Top 10 this year. They are not as stupid as some of you believe, far from it actually.....Some of that money will be used to sign a Top Ten pick...The remainder could possibly be used on some select extensions..

I really believe they like someone "alot"...who is projected Top Ten defense...I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Nose...

They need to make "splash" move on draft day!

What exactly gives you this confidence?

I don't recall the Steelers ever making a splash move on draft day, at least not in recent history.

I like your idea of moving into the top 10, but if it's for a NT, this board will **** a brick. "Why go top 10 on a player that's only on the field for 2 downs???"

They went up 10 spots to get Troy.

Though I dont see where we have the option to move up in this draft. We just have too many holes to trade away picks. We also have no extra picks from the compensation committee. Draft people are saying that next year should be the best and deepest draft in NFL history so I'm sure they don't want to start trading away 2016 picks.

Just saying...if they are staying with the 3-4 philosophy....

You really need THAT guy.....But would not be surprised if they are really liking some of the natural pass rushers that will be off the board early...Personally, I am not that high on the cover guys this year..

There is no ******* way we trade into the top 10. End of story. What are we going to do: trade this years #1 and #2 plus a premium pick next year. Yup, that's how the Steelers operate...

Remember, top 10 picks are much more valuable now than they were 5 years ago...because top draft picks used to get megadeals and now they are relatively cheap.

It's as worthwhile to talk about as the dumb **** about whether we might make a play for Suh or Revis...
