Roethlisberger, Steelers Agree to New Contract

Elway was still good but not in his prime at 38. They won a SB because of a complete team. deljzc is right, Ben is not in his physical/mental prime anymore. Mental prime , yes. That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve big money or that he can't win another SB.

Elway was 38, Ben's still only 33.

Ben deserves what he gets, come on fans he took us to three Super Bowls. Where would we be without him, we sound like the people on football talk with all the negative crap. We had no defense last year with a defense we could have one at least three more games. He had no running back in the playoff game and no defense. Talk about beatings, look what Ben has to take compared to the might ones Manning and Brady, **** if they had to play under the same conditions, Manning would be long gone and Brady and his wife would be meeting with God-del each week crying about poor Tommy.

We apparently only saved $1 million against the cap this year which makes sense. We don't need any more room at this point.

I was listening to Mad Dog radio this afternoon to avoid all of the NCAA basketball games and the show host decided to bash the Steelers and Ben about his new contract. The host said... the Steelers paid too much, its should have been a contract in the 13-15Mil range, Ben's stats aren't that great, the stats were up this past year because he had to throw the ball and didn't have a running game in the Playoffs, Ben is always getting injured, he's not worth that much and should have taken a discount like Peyton did this season, and Brady didn't take that much money away from his Team signing other players. Well alrighty now, sure is nice to hear what non-Steelers media folks think about Ben.

Maybe but he had his best statistical year ever last year. He certainly doesn't show any signs of getting worse any time soon, that's for sure.

Actually, Ben's best quarterback rating came way back in 2007. That was when he was going into his prime, which has this year and maybe next to run its course.

Ben tied for the league lead in passing yards, my thinking is he is in his prime. Because if he isn't ? where he is now is good enough. If the Steelers can improve on D and Williams pans out for a year or two, good things.

My concerns are on the D side of the ball.

as a shaky D lost three starters, and haven't been replaced..............

Give me a year better than last year of his statistics. His weapons around him are getting better. The system is getting better around him. I don't see any signs of him breaking down anytime soon. If we can get three more good years from him, then this new deal should be a smart investment.

As I mentioned above, Ben's best quarterback rating came in 2007. The weapons and the system are clouding your judgement about Ben just now entering his prime. His statistical accomplishment of tying for the league lead in passing yards in 2014 happened because the Steelers threw the ball over 600 times. Ben has been a great quarterback for a long time, but the end is coming. His physical abilities are indeed already breaking down, as evidenced by his reluctance to run with the ball -- 27 yards rushing with a long of 8 this past year, compared to 204 yards with a long of 30 in 2007.

The fact that you are hoping for three more good years should be enough for you to admit that your original statement was wrong.

He's staying in the pocket more which is a sign of Ben's maturity, hence less rushing yards. Physical abilities? I'm more interested in his arm strength which shows no signs of breaking down.

exactly

he is still nimble enough

not like he is a statue back there

the fact they had confidence in him to pass more shows their faith in him

So Ben rushing for 27 yards now is sign of his physical abilities all breaking down now.... Hmmmm. OK.

OR...

maybe it's just a sign of him changing his game a little bit to extend his career a little longer.

he doesn't seem as fast out there

perhaps some of both

And by all means lets ONLY look at the very flawed QB rating at determining when he was in his prime... seriously?

2007 - 15 games, 404 attempts, 65.3%, 3,154 yards, 7.8 ypa, 32 TD, 11 INT, 104.1 rating
2014 - 16 games, 608 attempts, 67.1%, 4,952 yards, 8.1 ypa, 32 TD, 9 INT, 103.3 rating

Best statistical year was 2007 my ***.

Use whatever ratings/stats you like, he has never played better than he did last season. Anyone who watched the games knows that.

To say he is losing his physical skills because he only rushed for 27 yards is laughable. To say he is losing his physical skills because he is aging is understandable. So yes. i will agree to both but not to the 27 rushing yards avenue.

Sure, he's staying in the pocket more. Plus his protection was better last year than it has been. So those are factors. And yes, I know Ben can do no wrong. But if you look at his play objectively, it's plain to see that his mobility isn't what it once was.

As I mentioned, the 27 yards is an example of his declining mobility, an example along with other factors. So is his 0.8 yards per rush. His PHYSICAL running ABILITY is not as good as it used to be. I'm glad you can understand that.

Look, clown, the guy tried to say that Ben is COMING INTO HIS PRIME here in the present day, based on his wonderful statistical 2014. While I acknowledge that it was indeed a productive season, I'm saying that Ben has been IN HIS PRIME for quite some time now, at least since a great year in 2007.

Is that so difficult for you to comprehend? Or would you care to try and argue that Ben, just now at the age of 33, is ENTERING his prime?

That was basically my point. He was pretty damn good last year and should continue with the personnel around him. The contract extension was inevitable. Who else is out there that is better, vet or rookie? I want him to play through his contract, but its possible injuries could hamper that, but he is a tough guy. The more is stays upright, the more games he plays. Its a good deal and I wouldn't want it any other way. Steeler for life!
