What type of grade would you give the Steelers in free agency in the past four years?

The Woodley deal smarts. 8M in dead cap space. Who knew Woodley would turn into a dog? The Steelers should know their players well enough.

K. Lewis goes elsewhere, possibly because the Steelers gave Colon too much money.

Brice MCcain was a good 1 year deal, but he's likely gone.

Unfortunately Cortez Allen is still here. Horrible deal.

Gilbert has been okay relative to his cap number, but Mike Mitchell has not.

Woridls was given franchise tag money. He's not worth it and has retired. Wish we used the money elsewhere, and by retiring it prevents a compensatory pick in the next draft. The Steelers should have had an idea of where Worilds heart was.

Moats was re-signed for good value, and might start.

Blount was brought in, then cut mid season.

E. Sanders. We matched and lost him the next year. Should have taken the 3rd round pick. Too late for a do over.

The Brown deal was a good one. Best move the Steelers made in years.

I'm sure I am missing a few names. Chime in if you want to add them. When was the last time the Steelers signed an impact free agent? Maybe Farrior, and that was pre-Tomlin.

so you start off with the Steelers should know their players well enough to not offer them a **** ton of money... and then dog them for Worilds, whom they could have given a **** ton of money to last year.

interesting.

Ryan Clark was pretty damn impactful...thinking of a FA signing...but yes I do agree way too many strikes and not enough hits under these 2

I ask myself sometimes if Colbert actually watches football.

When your philosophy is to build through the draft and re-sign your own, you'd better 1 ) Draft well, 2 ) Know which players are worth their second contracts in free agency and 3 ) Know when to let a player go in free agency and take a compensatory pick.

The Steelers have missed a bit too much on the three points I stated. You could add a 4th point. Know when to let expensive and declining vets go, which the Steelers clearly do not. Ward, Hampton, Ike and Troy should have been cut a year earlier. It would have saved us a lot in cap space and given us more cap money to spend in free agency.

Ya know contrary to what some may think here I actually think the Steelers are pretty good at F/A. I mean you look at these teams who annually make a big splash in F/A and they seem to be the same NON PLAYOFF TEAMS every fricking year. The Bucs, Dolphins, Jags, Raiders, Jets, Redskins (sorry to my Native American friends out there. No offense) and there are others and its the same result. Over paid guys who seem to cash in and have lost the desire. Of course there are exceptions like there are in any situation. Guys like Revis come to mind that instantly make a team better upon arrival but they are in the minority. I like the Steeler's approach by bringing in under the radar guys like a McCain and Moats who made this team better. Blount could have also been in that category as well but we gambled and lost on him. Hell, it happens and even to the best of organizations. The guy wanted to play more and Tomlin decided he wanted to run his horse Bell all day long and Blount said screw this. Not a good attitude to have but there it is and we screwed the pooch in the playoff loss. I think the Steelers have the right philosophy though by not overpaying for these guys on day one and two. Best way to wreck a franchise.

Lets wait and see what the Dolphins do this year with their 100 million dollar man. Hell, they're already trying to get rid of Wallace two years removed from that 60 mil contract. Hang in there boys, I think we'll be ok and they will make their usual signings of a few under the radar guys. These are generally the hungry players looking to prove their worth in the NFL for perhaps a bigger payday down the road. Case in point Brice McCain.

We are usually pretty good bargain basement shoppers

lmao ... it doesn't matter who the Steelers sign in FA. We'll all jump for joy when they score a TD, make a sack or intercept the ball and cuss 'em when they screw up as if they'd been here for years.

Whomever watched a year of Mike Mitchell, and then decided to pick up his option bonus needs to be fired. He essentially made about 2 plays all year and was a step or three slow on so many passes.

Too much sun? After all isin't that the sunshine state?

we would have been better off forcing Woodley to restructure last year to vet min via rest of his last year cap number june 1 roster bonus. We would of had better depth at olb after jj wen't down and if he he stayed and did well we might of still had him and a lolb and in a 4-3 re.

We really suck at getting DB's its like our FO bats like a #8 hitter Mccain has bee n our only good CB pick up the only other was Clark.
Wr Cotchery was a good pick up and should of been kept rather would have had him vs DHB.

TE Please give up on Speath

This doesn't look like a thread on the Steelers acquiring FAs, it's more along the lines of what they do in free agency with their own players (which are the examples from post 1).

Don't forget the players we have retained:

Ben's 2nd contract.
Brown over Wallace
Pouncey
Timmons
Heyward
Warren
Sushi
Gilbert yoi...
Signing Cortez Allen ...double yoi!!

Letting Woods walk
Asking Ike to take a paycut
Dropping a non productive Woodley to get some cap relief
Losing Lewis hurt
Losing Mendenhall did not
Distancing ourselves from Polamalu with the intention to clear cap

Looking at these moves, It is a game, and for the most part, we've done alright.
I'm not a fan of the Gilbert signing, but I understand it.
The Lewis/Allen decision burned us. If Cortez can turn it around this year, I'll be thrilled!

Hindsight is always 20/20, but I'd say we're doing fine with what we've done with retaining/releasing our own players.

Is Coach good at starting new threads?

in my opinion, Cotchery should have been kept and lan celot released. Hind sight 20/20 but i wanted cotch to stay all along.

Salute the nation

We are bad at Free Agency and still usually in cap hell... That is hard to do, especially when you draft poorly too LOL
