Although safety Troy Polamalu has been instrumental to the Pittsburgh Steelers' success since entering the league in 2003, the eight-time Pro Bowler's stint in the Steel City may be nearing its conclusion.

Continue for updates.

Steelers Reportedly Want to Part Ways with Polamalu

Wednesday, March 4

Polamalu was once among the most dominant defensive players in football, but with his skills continuing to decline at a rapid rate, the Steelers appear ready to move on.

According to CBS Pittsburgh, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed his expectations regarding the 33-year-old defensive back's future on 93.7 The Fan's The Cook and Poni Show.

"That is the elephant in the room," Bouchette said. "I expect him not to be here by some means. The Steelers are hoping he would retire, but I don't know if he is going to."

Regardless of Polamalu's decision, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is confident the former USC standout has played his last game for the Steelers, according to NFL.com's Marc Sessler:

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the organization believes the celebrated safety has played his last game for the Steelers, per a pair of team sources.

Rapoport was told that the defender is not in Pittsburgh's plans for 2015 and won't be back. The only question is how his exit will play out.

Albert Breer of NFL.com reported that if the Steelers decide to part ways with their veteran safety, there's a good chance he'll call it a career:

Releasing a player of Polamalu's caliber would likely be difficult for the Steelers organization. He has won two Super Bowls with the franchise and amassed a resume that is certainly worthy of Hall of Fame consideration.

On the heels of a 2014 season in which he made very few of the impact plays he's known for, though, it is clear Polamalu isn't the player he once was.

Perhaps another team will take a chance on Polamalu because of what he adds from an experience standpoint, but there are no indications the Steelers will do that.

I think it's time for Troy to figure out what his life's work is going to be.

But Steeler loyalty is a reason why good players never see the field. For all we know Shamarko May be a pretty good safety. People was wondering why Shamarko didn't see the field last year, because for once Troy didn't get injured. But I think it's time to see what he can do.

Actually, Will Allen supplanted Thomas on the depth chart and was the go to when replacing Troy on the field. Thomas has struggled with his own injuries and also with learning his assignments. Right now, Thomas is nothing more than a special teams/back up safety. Clearly not the type of player they were hoping for.

Hate to see one of the greatest Steelers of all time go but his productivity has slipped. I've enjoyed Troy's contributions to our team success and more specific, his personal thrashing of Baltimore when it counted! However, it's time for him, Kiesel, and Ike to call it a career and walk away with their stellar accomplishments. I'll wait until the press conference to confirm if this is official.

it's time. it sucks, but it's time...

Both should have been let go in early 2014. We would have saved a bundle in cap space. Colbert and the decsion makers in ability to let past their prime expensive players go is a reason why we can't land A list free agents.

Thanks the memories Troy. You are an all time Steelers. May you retire with good health.

Good luck Troy and please retire a STEELERs

Salute the nation

Love Troy. Love taking pictures at games when he lines up at RB in the victory formation. Love seeing his hair flying behind him when he's making plays. His next gameday should be in Canton putting on a yellow jacket. When Hines was cut it hurt because he was the heart and soul of the team. I hope Troy can see the writing on the wall and retire without having to be cut. Its a sensitive topic, but its time. Don't want to see him go out like Ed Reed with diminished skills, wearing the wrong color jersey.

It needed to happen. Its time we move forward and salvage only the good memories of Troy.

Thanks Tazmanian Devil...........so glad you were apart of this team. One of the greatest safeties of our time.... Class act you are brother !!!

i still think he is the best safety we have. why not a huge pay cut vrs a cut?

Am I the only one who thought our defense played better with Will Allen in for Troy this season? Not taking anything away from Troy's great career, but by the end of the season he looked as finished as Hines Ward looked a couple years ago. We have to turn the page.

Troy will play in TN or AZ this year and then call it a career. Ike said he has been training as if he's playing this year, so if he still thinks he has more football in him, he is going to keep playing. It will sting seeing him in another uniform, but his time has come here in Pittsburgh. Will be a sad time, but this team needs to push forward.

Does anyone else think Mike Mitchell would make a better SS than a FS?

With the Steelers giving up more bonus money to him he must be in their long term plans.

He received a 5-year deal, so there's no denying he is their plans. I'm just hoping he will be better than what we saw. I don't care where he plays, just get it done.

the end of an era... :(

I hate seeing Troy go but realistically it should have happen last year if not the year before. he will always be a Steeler favorite and he has made some fun plays but time comes to all.

Troy has been great on and off the field, the consummate professional. You will be missed Mr.Polamalu. Now I believe with Troy's departure that would give us an addition 6 million in cap space to something like 15 million. Cut fat *** Cam and Keisel and that's another 3.5 million, Restructure Pouncey, extend Ben and Hayward we should be close to the 25 million range or higher Please do not sit on your hands Colbert/Tomlin and wait for 2nd and 3rd tier F/A's. Snag a CB and OLB in day one. We need defensive talent on this team now or we will continue to waste Ben's remaining time here. I don't want a repeat of last year bringing in players that couldn't even start for their old teams. Quit trying to put this team together with tape and bailing wire. Its bad enough that we more than like struck out on your doosie of a selection with Uncle Jarvis when we needed to hit a grand slam. Tyler Eifert should have been selected and that would be one less position to be concerned with. I know he's been injured with the Bengels but I much rather have taken him. We still have a huge question mark with Uncle Jarvis in now what is year 3. Bad pick that will come to haunt us.

There wasn't anyone in the league quite like Troy... at his peak, he was simply a freak of nature. His instincts and timing were impeccable. He made you sit up in your chair when the game was on the line and the D needed a big play. He came up huge, time and time again. I'll forever remain a true admirer of his, in particular his humble, reserved personality. One of the all time greats, it's sad to see it come to an end. Troy P, you are the man!
