This kid can play and would be a nice upgrade over Landy Jones and Gradkowski. Hell, he could maybe even develop behind Ben and be a starter in a few years. I would trade a 6th for him.



Zach Mettenberger is on the roster bubble after the Titans signed Matt Cassel to be their No. 2 quarterback.

The Titans probably missed the boat to trade Mettenberger after he started six games and averaged 7.9 YPA with an 8:7 TD:INT ratio as a 2013 rookie. Forced into duty last season, "Mett Show" averaged a measly 5.6 YPA with a 4:7 TD:INT ratio across four starts. With two years left on his rookie deal, Mettenberger is cheap and could possibly bring back a late-rounder if dealt.
 
The problem is the Steelers are low in terms of claim priority, and would need to trade for him. Its is unlikely we can claim him off waivers. However, backup QB is a huge need. We are a .500 team with Landry Jones and a sure loser if he has to start in a playoff game. . Ben is worth that much. I think Mettenberger is better than Landry Jones, and if he's wants out or Tennesee or is cut, is worth a 7th round pick from us.

I thought this a soon as they got Mariotta.
Mettenberger is buried on that roster, see if they would take a 5th rounder.

That said, If I thought of it...no way it happens.

Trade them Shamarko! Trade them Jarvis! Trade them a draft pick! Colbert, make it happen my man!
 
I think this would be an outstanding idea. I'd give up a 5th for him, no doubt.
 
We just signed Gradkowski to a 1 year deal or whatever it was. They ain't gonna go get another QB. Maybe next offseason we draft one

I've thought Mettenberger would be a good fit for us since he came out of LSU. Watched the kid a lot in college and he's got a major-league arm, played in a pro-style system at LSU... and has basically been the only decent QB LSU has had under Les Miles...

...meaning he can overcome bad coaching.

Go watch the LSU/Georgia game from a few years ago when he went head-to-head with Aaron Murray. That was a QB clinic...those two put on a show.

I would even advocate a late round pick (5th, 6th, 7th) because I have no doubt Colbert is going to draft another QB in the near term and no way does the late round guy Colbert picks end up a better talent than Mettenberger.

Mettenberger has two years left on his contract (2016 and 2017) at practically minimum salary. By 2018, you get him at backup money ($2-3 million/season) if he flashes some ability in the system and who knows, might even end up being a starter if Roethlisberger retires while we groom a better franchise guy.

Tons of potential with his fit for our system/talent. Tons of potential contractually. Tons of potential considering our depth chart at the position (No doubt he's better than both Gradkowski and Jones).

Very smart idea. I'd even "venture" to say - "Hey Cincy - whatcha gonna do with AJ McCarron???"
 
How are some of you so confident that Mettenberger is that much better than Landry?

He's played even worse than Landry.

Mettenberger is def better than Landry. BTGW, I think the FO liked him coming out of college, so this could be interesting. If Landry and Bruce look uninspiring during camp, I could se us looking at this guy.

This team pisses its collective pants at the thought of making moves, especially at backup QB. Meanwhile, TN inserted Mett vs. us and we made him look like Dan Marino, circa 1984.

Simple process:

1. Re-sign Ike Taylor for one of those "last game as a Steeler" contracts.
2. Contact Lebeau and offer him Taylor for Mettenberger.
3. Complete paperwork for deal.
